Skill (Masters)

A skill (Japanese: スキル Skill) is an ability that a sync pair can have in Pokémon Masters EX.

Most skills provide a dynamic effect in battle similar to Abilities. These come in three varieties: passive skills, grid skills, and lucky skills. Sync pairs also have theme skills, which activate before battle, and expedition skills, which do not affect battle at all.

Some skills also have skill ranks, indicated by a number at the end of the name. Higher numbers denote either a higher chance for a skill's effect to occur, an increase in the length of an effect's duration, or an increase in the number of times an effect occurs.

Types of skills

Passive

A passive skill (Japanese: パッシブスキル Passive Skill) is a skill that is innate to a sync pair and provides an effect in battle. Most sync pairs have multiple passive skills, up to a maximum of three passive skills. Master sync pairs, which are exclusively available through Master Fair sync pair scouts and BP Sync Pair Super Vouchers, have a special fourth passive skill called a Master passive skill. Master passive skills have effects that increase the damage dealt and decrease the damage taken by the whole team, with their effects increasing based on the number of sync pairs on the team that share a certain theme skill. Arc suit sync pairs have two extra passive skills called arc suit passive skills, one of which functions like a master passive skill and the other which raises the type rebuff of the team and lowers the type rebuff of the opponent's team for a particular type. Fair-exclusive sync pairs, which are sync pairs exclusive to Poké Fair Scouts, as well as Scottie/Bettie and sync pairs exclusive to Gym Scout ticket scouts, can unlock a special fourth passive skill called a superawakened passive skill once they reach superawakening level 5.

Sync pairs formed with Egg Pokémon hatch with a random number of passive skills, but each Egg Pokémon of a given role ( Strike, Tech, or Support) always has the same first, second, and third passive skills.

Grid

A grid skill (Japanese: ボ—ドスキル Board Skill) is a skill that provides an effect in battle and is only accessible to a playable sync pair via their sync grid. Each sync pair with an expanded sync grid can be customized to have a variety of grid skills, especially at move level 3 or higher. Additional grid skills can be added to a sync pair's sync grid through grid expansions, which traditionally occur on Pokémon Masters Day.

Lucky

Main article: Lucky skill

A lucky skill is a skill that provides an effect in battle and is only accessible to a playable sync pair using Lucky Scrolls and Lucky Cookies. Each sync pair can have only one lucky skill active at a time, and sync pairs can stock up to two additional lucky skills that can be swapped into the active lucky skill slot at any time.

Theme

Main article: Theme skill

A theme skill is another skill that is innate to a sync pair, but it only activates in single-player battles if at least two members of the team share a theme skill—they have no effect during co-op battles. When activated, a theme skill grants a stat bonus to type-specific damage, Attack and Sp. Atk, and/or HP for the entire team.

Prior to version 2.59.0, players could use Skill Spheres to upgrade theme skills up to level 4, providing stat greater bonuses. From version 2.59.0 onward, theme skills are always at their maximum level.

Expedition

Main article: Expedition skill

An expedition skill is a skill that boosts or reduces the team's discovery levels on a Trainer Lodge expedition. It has no effect in battle.

The following skills hold certain distinctions from other currently obtainable passive, grid, and lucky skills. They follow a naming scheme similar to superawakened passive skills in that they directly reference the Trainer or Pokémon in the sync pair it is attributed to. The thematic naming scheme is also reflected across all non-English languages, which otherwise explicitly describe the skill's effects. Generally, these skills are unique to a single sync pair, though they can be shared by a group of sync pairs that that are thematically related; for example, Akari & Samurott and Rei & Decidueye share Survey Corps Teachings in reference to their membership in the Survey Corps. These skills are available as passive skills, though they can also be introduced as grid skills in sync grid expansions.
