Description A reliable veteran Pokémon Trainer from Johto, this energetic nature lover can often be found roaming the mountains.

Ethan (Japanese: ヒビキ Hibiki) is a Pokémon Trainer in Pokémon Masters EX, based on the character of the same name in the core series games. He forms a sync pair with Cyndaquil and its Evolutions, Quilava and Typhlosion. This sync pair can be obtained through the general sync pair scout and was first made available on January 15, 2020 alongside the Fire-type Training Event. The pair's potential can be raised to 6★ EX since May 20, 2021, which unlocks Ethan's EX style.

Ethan in his sygna suit forms a sync pair with Lugia. This sync pair can be obtained through Master Fair sync pair scouts and was first made available on May 30, 2022 alongside the villain event Team Rocket Attacks. The pair's potential can be raised to 6★ EX since it first released, which unlocks Sygna Suit Ethan's EX style.

Ethan also forms a sync pair with Ho-Oh. This sync pair can be obtained through variety sync pair scouts and was first made available on March 14, 2025 alongside the Special Kick-Start Event Strong and Reliable Friends. The pair's potential can be raised to 6★ EX since it first released, though it lacks an EX style.

Ethan also appears in his arc suit, again forming a sync pair with Lugia. This pair can be obtained through an Arc Suit Fair sync pair scout beginning on July 17, 2025. This pair can be raised to 6★ EX since it first released.

Reason: History & Role in Pokémon Masters EX

History

Ethan has experienced similar events to his core series counterpart as the player character. Ethan grew up and became best friends with Lyra in New Bark Town.[3] Ethan received a first partner Pokémon from Professor Elm and left New Bark Town. While on his journey, Ethan had a rivalry with Silver, battled the Gym Leader Morty,[4] and defeated Team Rocket in Goldenrod City. During his journey, Ethan caught a Cyndaquil and a Lugia.

Cyndaquil → Quilava → Typhlosion

Cyndaquil can evolve into Quilava once it has reached level 30 through its sync pair story Cyndaquil's Evolution, and then into Typhlosion once it has reached level 45 through its sync pair story Quilava's Evolution.

Trivia

  • Ethan is based on the player character of the Johto-based games, as his rival is Silver, who has the first partner Pokémon with a type advantage over Ethan, and he is mentioned to have defeated Team Rocket in Goldenrod City.
  • Ethan is childhood friends with Lyra that he also considers a rival.[7]
  • All versions of Ethan use special voice-over lines upon entering a team that contains certain Trainers (regardless of their partner Pokémon) and victory with them. Those Trainers include Kris, Silver, Lyra, Red, Lance, and Professor Oak.
  • On release, one of Sygna Suit Ethan's "Aeroblast: Power +1" sync grid tiles cost 10 energy despite surrounding "Aeroblast: Power +2" tiles costing 3 energy. This was fixed in version 2.22.0, and all players received 840 co-op sync orbs as compensation.
  • Ethan is the first main character to receive an arc suit.
  • Arc Suit Ethan & Lugia were the first sync pair with the Multi role and the Field EX role. Following their release, all possible combinations of roles and EX roles were available on obtainable sync pairs.
  • Ethan owning a Togetic is likely a reference to the Togepi that hatches from the Mystery Egg that the player obtains in the Johto-based core series games.

Origin

Ethan's design is based on his appearance in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. Cyndaquil is one of the first partner Pokémon of Johto in the core series games. In addition, Ethan's animated series and Pokémon Adventures counterparts have also been depicted with Cyndaquil and its Evolutions. Cyndaquil, Quilava, and Typhlosion's Dex entries come from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Ho-Oh is a Legendary Pokémon that can be caught at the Bell Tower in the Johto-based games, with the story of HeartGold largely revolving around it. The pair is a collaboration with the Trading Card Game, and is a reference to the Ethan's Ho-Oh ex card from the Hot Wind Arena subset. Ho-Oh's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.

Lugia is a Legendary Pokémon that can be caught at the Whirl Islands in the Johto-based games, with the story of SoulSilver largely revolving around it. Lugia's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
