Description This Trainer from the town of Postwick is Leon's little brother. His experience in the Gym Challenge inspired him to chase a new dream of becoming a Pokémon Professor.

Hop (Japanese: ホップ Hop) is a Pokémon Trainer in Pokémon Masters EX, based on the character of the same name in the core series games. He forms a sync pair with Zamazenta. This sync pair was first made available on August 12, 2021. The pair's potential can be upgraded to 6★ EX beginning on July 14, 2023, which unlocks Hop's EX style. However, unlike most sync pairs, this pair cannot be upgraded with Champion Spirits—only Custom Legendary Spirits from the villain event Lamenting a Millennium or the Legendary Adventures story Howling Shield of Eternity can be used.

Hop in his Neo Champion attire forms a sync pair with his Galarian Zapdos. This pair could be obtained through a limited Master Fair sync pair scout beginning on March 2, 2023. This pair could be raised to 6★ EX since it first released.

Hop also forms a sync pair with Rillaboom, which is capable of Dynamaxing. This pair can be obtained through a variety sync pair scout beginning on December 10, 2024. This pair can be raised to 6★ EX since it first released, though this pair lacks an EX style.

Hop also forms a sync pair with Pincurchin. This pair can be obtained by exchanging 300 Training Tickets beginning on January 1, 2025. This pair can be raised to 6★ EX since it first released, though this pair lacks an EX style.

Hop also forms a sync pair with Zacian. This pair can be obtained through a variety sync pair scout beginning on February 26, 2025. This pair can be raised to 6★ EX since it first released, though this pair lacks an EX style.

History

Hop is a young boy from Postwick in the Galar region. Before he became a Trainer, he and Gloria traveled to Wedgehurst to pick up his older brother, Leon. After becoming a Trainer, he went on a journey around Galar with the goal of becoming the Champion. Along the way, he formed a rivalry with Victor and Gloria, and he also battled Eternatus alongside Gloria, Zacian, and Zamazenta. However, he was unable to become the Champion, and he realized he would rather work towards becoming a Pokémon Professor. He still wants to hone his Pokémon battling skills, though, so he spends his days alternating between battling and studying.

Pokémon

The first Pokémon Hop forms a sync pair with is Zamazenta. He met it when it came to help him battle Eternatus, and he was very excited to battle alongside it. He used it to battle the second Pokémon he formed a sync pair with, Galarian Zapdos.

Zamazenta (Crowned Shield)

Raising this sync pair to 6★ EX will unlock Song Key 08010, which allows "Battle! (Hop) (Pokémon Masters EX Version)" to be played in the Jukebox.

Name Description
Passive Skills
The Sword That Saved Galar Protects the user against critical hits. When an attack move used by the user's Pokémon that targets itself or an ally is successful, that attack's target becomes all allied sync pairs. When an attack move used by the user's Pokémon that targets an opponent is successful, that attack's target becomes all opposing sync pairs. When the user's sync move attacks an opponent, the target becomes all opposing sync pairs. The power and chance of applying additional effects of moves and sync moves affected by this passive skill are not lowered even if there are multiple targets. Except in certain circumstances, successful hits with the user's following attacks become critical hits: Pokémon's moves or sync move.
Fierce Entry 6 Raises the user's Attack by six stat ranks when it enters a battle.
Defense Destroyer 9 Lowers the target's Defense by two stat ranks when the user's attack move against it is successful.

On hand

During A Jolly Trio!, Hop sends out a Scorbunny to help introduce the player to the Pokémon that Professor Bellis is researching. In From Kitakami—Continued, Hop is shown with a Cinderace that he uses to demonstrate Dynamax to Kieran. It is unknown if this Cinderace was evolved from the Scorbunny he was previously shown with, and it is also unknown if this Cinderace has the Gigantamax factor.

During her challenge uniform's sync pair story, Gloria reveals that she had raised her Cinderace from an Egg given to her by Hop.

Trivia

  • Hop's rival is Gloria from Pokémon Sword, based on his ownership of Zamazenta and Gloria's Zacian.
  • Hop shares his Japanese voice actress, Yuko Sanpei, with his counterpart from the Pokémon: Twilight Wings miniseries.
  • Hop & Zamazenta are the only sync pair obtained from a Legendary Adventures story that only has moves of a single type: Steel. All other sync pairs from Legendary Adventures have moves of at least two different types.
  • All versions of Hop use special voice-over lines upon entering a team that contains certain Trainers (regardless of their partner Pokémon) and victory with them. Those Trainers include Victor, Gloria, Marnie, Bede, Piers, Leon, and Sonia.
  • Hop's Champion attire resembles the outfit worn by his brother, Leon.
  • In his Champion outfit's sync pair story, Hop reveals he first met Zapdos in the Wild Area, similar to how it's encountered in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
  • In Gloria's challenge uniform sync pair story, it is implied that Hop owns a Scorbunny. Given that Gloria's first partner Pokémon was confirmed to be an Inteleon in Beachside Rivalry, this Scorbunny is likely Hop's first partner Pokémon.
    • While he is shown to own a Scorbunny during A Jolly Trio!, it is unclear if this Scorbunny is the same one he was previously implied to own or if this is a new Scorbunny that was hatched while helping Professor Bellis with her research.
  • In the solo event Three Rivals, Three Ways, Hop is shown to have been raised his Rillaboom from a Grookey that was hatched by Professor Bellis.
  • Hop is the first character to form two sync pairs exclusive to variety sync pair scouts.

Origin

Hop's design is based on his appearance in Pokémon Sword and Shield. In Pokémon Sword's post-game scenario, Hop befriends Zamazenta after coming to its aid, and it joins his party. Crowned Shield Zamazenta's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Sword.

Rillaboom is Hop's signature Pokémon in the core series games if the player chooses Scorbunny as their first partner Pokémon. It is capable of Dynamaxing in his eighth battle against the player. Rillaboom's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Sword.

Hop uses a Pincurchin on his team beginning with his seventh battle against the player in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Pincurchin's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Sword.

In Pokémon Shield's post-game scenario, Hop befriends Zacian after coming to its aid, and it joins his party. The pair itself is a special collaboration with the Trading Card Game, and is a reference to the Hop's Zacian card from the Journey Together expansion. Zacian's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Shield.

Hop is not seen owning a Galarian Zapdos outside this game. Zapdos's Dex entry comes from Pokémon Sword.
