minecraft.net on The Wild Update

The Wild Update is a major update released on June 7, 2022, as Java Edition 1.19 and Bedrock Edition 1.19.0,[1] themed around "scary things" and natural wilderness. It introduces the deep dark and mangrove swamp biomes; ancient cities; mobs such as the allay, the frog, the tadpole, and the warden, as well as new items obtainable only in these new biomes.

Key art

On Java Edition, the first publicly-available build containing The Wild Update content is Deep Dark Experimental Snapshot 1, which was released on February 17, 2022. The first pre-release for The Wild Update was released on May 18, 2022 and the first release candidate was released on June 2, 2022.

Additions

Blocks

Froglight

  • Obtained from frogs eating small magma cubes.
  • Froglight color depends on the frog type.
  • Has three variants: pearlescent, verdant, and ocre.

Frogspawn

  • Spawned in the water after breeding two frogs.
  • Hatches into tadpoles.
  • Cannot be obtained even with Silk Touch.

Reinforced Deepslate

  • Found in the centerpiece of the ancient city.
  • Cannot be moved with a piston, and mining is slow and will not drop the item.

New mangrove wood type, found in the mangrove swamp biome:

New mud blocks:

New sculk blocks, all found in the deep dark:

  • Sculk
  • Breaking sculks is a good way to get Experience.
  • Sculk Catalyst
  • Sculk Shrieker
    • Causes a shriek sound and particle effect to be made when activated by the player or nearby sculk sensors.
    • Has a warning system where the player can only activate the sculk shrieker three times; upon the fourth shriek, a warden will spawn.
    • Sculk shriekers placed by the player or generated by sculk catalysts cannot spawn a warden.
  • Sculk Sensor
    • Detects any vibrations within a 8-block radius.
    • Vibration detection can be dampened with wool or carpet.
    • Emits a redstone signal depending on vibration frequency and close proximity.
  • Sculk Vein

Items

Bucket of Tadpole

  • Obtained by using a water bucket on a tadpole.
  • Can be used to transport the tadpole to a new location.

Echo Shard

Goat Horns

  • Obtained from goats ramming into blocks native to their biome.
  • Has eight different variants, four from normal goats, and four from screaming goats.

Recovery Compass

  • Used to point to the location of the player's last death.

New music disc:

Spawn eggs:

Mobs

Allay

Frog

Tadpole

  • Hatches from frogspawn
  • Will mature to a frog; its type depending on the biome they are matured in.
  • Can be moved with a water bucket.
  • Like fish mobs, tadpoles suffocate when on land.

Warden

  • Powerful, yet evadable hostile mob, with the most health out of any mob.
  • Spawns in from above after enough sculk shriekers have been activated.
  • A blind mob that can only detect players and mobs using vibration, smell, and touch.
  • Upon finding a target, the warden roars and pursues the target.
  • If it cannot reach the target, the warden does a sonic boom attack that bypasses armor, enchantments, shields, and other mob-related armor.
  • If not aggravated for 60 seconds, the warden will burrow down and despawn.
  • Drops a sculk catalyst when killed.

Non-mob entities

Boat with Chest

  • A variant of the boat used to also provide item storage.

Mangrove Boat

Display entities

  • Including block display, item display, and text display (block_display, item_display, and text_display), for flexible display of blocks, items and text.

Interaction

  • A new type of entity that records attacks and interactions. Interactions (interaction) are invisible and of a custom size, with following fields:
    • width: Width of the entity's bounding box (default 1).
    • height: Height of the entity's bounding box (default 1).
    • attack: An action object, records the last attack action on the entity.
    • interaction: An action object, records the last interaction action on the entity.
    • response: Boolean specifying if interacting should trigger a response (arm swing, sound effects, etc - default false).
  • Introduced action object accordingly. When an action is stored, it always has two fields:
    • player: The UUID (in standard integer array format) of the player performing the action.
    • timestamp: The timestamp of the game tick when the event happened (stored as a long).
  • This made following command usage possible:
    • Execute command as the last player who attacked the entity when using /execute on attacker.
    • Execute command as the last player who interacted with the entity when using /execute on target.
  • Advancement triggers also got triggered, when:
    • Interacting with an interaction entity: player_interacted_with_entity.
    • Attacking an interaction entity: player_hurt_entity.

Trivia

  • While this update introduces mud as a block, mud has existed in the franchise as a fluid in Minecraft Earth. The properties of mud in this update are identical to a block.
  • Fireflies were originally planned for this update, but were ultimately scrapped as some species of fireflies are poisonous to some species of frogs in real life.[3] This decision received heavy criticism from the community.
  • To promote The Wild Update, Mojang released a free choose your own adventure game on minecraft.net called Craft Your Own Adventure: Wild Tales.[4]
  • Kingbdogz stated in a tweet that the souls in the warden's chest is incredibly important to its lore.[5]
  • The official artwork and trailer for the update is notable for marking the first appearance of Sunny and Noor, before their official introduction into the game.
    • Similarly, Efe's first appearance was in the What Will You Uncover trailer.
  • So far, this is the last major update that has the word "Update" in its name. All subsequent major updates and game drops (e.g. Trails & Tales, Armored Paws, Tricky Trials, The Garden Awakens, Chase the Skies, etc.) do not have the word "Update" in their names. The first named major update whose name did not include "Update" was Village & Pillage, released in 2019.
