Beta 1.9 Prerelease 2 is the second pre-release for Java Edition 1.0.0, released on September 29, 2011,[1] which adds cauldrons, glass bottles, potions, effects, animal breeding mechanics, 9 more music discs, Hardcore mode, and the ability to clear effects by drinking milk.

Additions

Blocks

Cauldron

  • Present in the code, but not assigned to a block ID, making it unobtainable without mods, even with inventory editing.
  • Can be filled with a water bucket to start brewing. The liquid defaults to a mundane potion with no effects.
  • Holds 3 bottles worth of any potion.
  • Ingredients can be added to change the potion's effects. Most potions will end up with negative effects, in an attempt to make clean potions harder to brew[2].
  • The initial mundane potion appears as water, but once ingredients are added, it uses a tinted lava texture.
  • Refilling a potion cauldron with a water bucket will also change its effects.

Items

Blaze Powder

  • Crafted from blaze rods.
  • Ingredient for brewing potions.

Fermented Spider Eye

  • Can be poured back into a cauldron, unless it is full or already contains a different potion.
  • Has one of 32 generic names, with the actual effects being listed in the tooltip.
  • Identical potions can be stacked to 64. Due to hidden differences in their aux value, some potions that appear the same cannot be stacked together[2].

Music Discs

Mobs

Breeding

  • New system to breed animals.
    • Remains incomplete, as baby mobs aren't introduced yet.
    • Snow golems can be bred. This was removed in the next prerelease.
