An axe is a tiered tool that can quickly break wood-related and certain plant-related blocks, or be used as a melee weapon that temporarily disables shields. Axes have unique interactions with logs and blocks crafted from copper, turning them into stripped logs or removing a level of oxidation/coat of wax, respectively.
Variants
There are seven axe variants:
Obtaining
Wooden, golden, stone, copper, iron, and diamond axes are crafted using 2 sticks and 3 identical units of tool material.

Java Edition
In Java Edition, wooden, stone, and copper axes have an attack speed of 0.8 (1.25 seconds), iron axes have an attack speed of 0.9 (1.111 seconds), and golden, diamond, and netherite axes have an attack speed of 1 (1 second). They have the following statistics:

Breaking
An axe is used to break logs, blocks derived from wood and some other blocks faster than by using other tools. An axe uses 1 durability to break 1 block. For blocks that break instantly, it uses 0 durability.

Stripping and scraping
Using an axe on a log, wood block, block of bamboo, or block of copper causes it to become a stripped log, stripped wood block, block of stripped bamboo, or removes one layer of oxidization or wax from a copper-based block or a copper golem, respectively. This consumes one point of durability from the axe.
In Java Edition, if the player holds a shield in their off-hand and attempts to strip a block with an axe, they will enable the shield instead of stripping with the axe. However, if the player sneaks, they can strip blocks as normal.
Attacking
Pressing attack while holding an axe inflicts damage on both mobs and other players. Upon damaging a mob or player, the axe's durability decreases by 2.
Attacking a boat or a minecart with any axe tier instantly destroys it [Java Edition only], without decreasing the axe's durability.
Disabling shields
Attacking a shielding player with an axe disables the use of all of their shields for 5 seconds. Wardens, vindicators, piglin brutes, and other axe-wielding mobs also disable a shielding player's shield. This special ability has been referred to as a crushing blow on certain occasions.[1]

An axe can be repaired in an anvil by adding units of the tiers' repair material, with each repair material restoring 25% the axe's maximum durability, rounded down. Two axes of the same tier can also be combined in an anvil. Both methods preserve the axe's enchantments, unlike by crafting to repair.

Trivia
- Before Java Edition 1.13, in the language files, axes were referred to as Hatchets.[5]
- Weaponsmith villagers gifting stone, iron and golden axes is a reference to the story The Honest Woodcutter, where a woodcutter dropped his axe into a river, and is successively provided a silver and a golden axe by the river god.

Notes
- ↑ The formula to find the total lifetime damage is
ceil(durability ÷ 2) × damage per hit. The durability is halved then ceiled because axes take double durability when used as a weapon, and the last 1 durability can also deal damage. The formula also ignores enchantments, and assumes each attack is performed at maximum charge. - ↑ a b Silk Touch and Fortune are mutually exclusive.
- ↑ a b c d Sharpness, Smite, Bane of Arthropods, and Cleaving[upcoming JE Combat Tests] are mutually exclusive.
- ↑ a b c d Fire Aspect, Looting, Knockback, and Sweeping Edge currently exist, but they can be used only for swords.
