He is a Pokémon Trainer from an unnamed island whose goal is to become as powerful as the Ancient Adventurer that he admires. He owned a mysterious Poké Ball that was given to him by his grandfather and was later revealed to house a Black Rayquaza. His first Pokémon was a Fuecoco that he caught after bonding over singing. Roy also becomes a member of the Rising Volt Tacklers.

History

Young Roy

Pre-series

Roy grew up on an island in the Kanto region with his parents and grandfather. During his childhood, Roy would travel with his parents on a cargo ship and his grandfather would tell the story of an Ancient Adventurer, which inspired him to become a Pokémon Trainer. Sometime later, Roy was left under his grandfather's care when his parents went traveling on their own for business, as he received an Ancient Poké Ball from his grandfather and decided to undercover the mystery of it. Also, Roy would sing to himself until a group of wild Pokémon heard him and followed him.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Roy debuted in For Sure! 'Cause Sprigatito's with Me!. In the morning after a storm, he ran to the beach, where he found the flag missing from the Rising Volt Tacklers' airship.

In The Treasure After the Storm!, it was revealed that Roy attends virtual school and that he couldn't catch a Pokémon because there were no Pokémon Trainers on the island. After noticing that his Secret Base had been raided, Roy came across a Fuecoco and befriended it. Soon, they heard a commotion nearby and ran towards it to find Liko and Sprigatito running from a group of wild Pokémon. Despite their best efforts to escape, however, they were cornered and tied up by multiple String Shots until Friede came to their rescue. Afterwards, Roy and Fuecoco parted ways.

Wanting to meet Fuecoco again, Roy snuck on the Brave Olivine, but he got zapped by Captain Pikachu, waking up everyone on the aircraft in the process. Roy wanted Fuecoco to be his partner, but Friede told him that Fuecoco had to reciprocate those feelings as well. He and Liko searched all over the Brave Olivine, and while they weren't able to find Fuecoco that night, Roy decided to leave it some Oran Berries. In the next day, Roy stumbled upon an agitated Fuecoco, who told him that there was trouble brewing at the Brave Olivine. At the beach, Roy partnered with Fuecoco to battle against Zirc and his Rhydon. By chanting alongside the Fire Croc Pokémon, Roy helped Fuecoco to successfully fire off an Ember.

Roy joining the Rising Volt Tacklers

In The Ancient Poké Ball, Roy battled against Amethio for the first time and, even alongside Liko, was quickly overwhelmed by his strength. When Ceruledge was about to finish off Fuecoco and Sprigatito, Roy's Ancient Poké Ball started to shine brightly and released a Black Rayquaza, who fired a Draco Meteor that forced the Explorers to retreat and flew away. Later that day, Roy opened his heart to Fuecoco, confessing that he wanted it to be his partner. Fuecoco reciprocated those feelings and spat out a Poké Ball that Friede's Charizard gave it, allowing Roy to catch it. After stating he wanted to realize both his and Fuecoco's dreams, his grandfather allowed him to go out on his Pokémon journey with the Rising Volt Tacklers.

In Special Training with Cap!, Liko and Roy had a sparring battle, which ended with both of their Pokémon just exhausting themselves. After a training session with Captain Pikachu, they had another battle, which went much better. Although Roy ended up losing, he wasn't dejected, and promised to battle Liko again later.

In Welcome to Paldea!, the Rising Volt Tacklers landed in Paldea. In the following episode, Roy and Liko visited Artazon to meet Gym Leader Brassius, who had supposedly seen the Black Rayquaza. Brassius eventually admitted this to have been the case, with the encounter having left him in an artistic slump, as he felt his Rayquaza statue was not as good as the real thing. Roy, however, thought Brassius's statue looked just as good as the actual Rayquaza. After hearing how Rayquaza had been the inspiration behind his journey, Brassius challenged Roy to a battle to see if he was worthy of facing Rayquaza. During the battle, Brassius told Roy to remember to keep an eye on his own Pokémon, allowing Roy to spot that Fuecoco had just learned Stomping Tantrum. Despite this new move, however, Fuecoco was still defeated after Brassius Terastallized his Sudowoodo, ending the match in Roy's loss. After the battle, Roy expressed interest in getting to try out using the Terastal phenomenon himself. After learning that Brassius saw the Black Rayquaza flying over Arboliva's Forest, Roy and Liko decided to make it their next destination.

In Arboliva's Forest, Nemona led Roy and Liko to Arboliva's Forest, only to find part of it burned down after a lightning strike started a wildfire. While searching the area, Roy came across a giant Arboliva with an Ancient Poké Ball. Mistakenly assuming the pair were trying to harm the Pokémon living in the forest, Arboliva began attacking Roy and Liko. While Roy and Liko kept Arboliva distracted, Mollie treated an injured Paldean Wooper, calming Arboliva down. In the following episode, the Rising Volt Tacklers held a successful group effort to replant the damaged part of the forest. Liko's pendant briefly transformed into a mysterious Pokémon just before Arboliva returned to its Ancient Poké Ball.

Roy catches Wattrel

In An Unexpected Picnic!, a Wattrel stole a sandwich that Roy had made for Fuecoco. Roy chased after Wattrel, until it reached a cliff, where it turned around to face Fuecoco. After a brief confrontation, Roy agreed to share the sandwich, only for Wattrel to steal both halves of it. Soon after, Roy noticed that Wattrel wasn't flying away with others of its kind. In the next episode, Roy sought Wattrel out again in order to help it learn to fly. Wattrel's fear of heights made this hard, so Roy eventually got the idea of using Ludlow's fishing rod to support Wattrel mid-air while it attempted to fly. This strategy eventually succeeded, allowing Wattrel to fly as high as the others of its kind. Happy to see Wattrel flying, Roy was about to leave, only for Wattrel to fly after him. Taking this as a sign that Wattrel wanted to be caught by Roy, Murdock gave him a Poké Ball to do so. When a sudden gust of wind threw Wattrel off-balance, Roy threw the Poké Ball at it before it could hit the ground, saving it and adding it to his team.

Roy, Liko, and Dot battling the Explorers

In Someone We Can't See! Whosawhatsit?, Roy was informed that Liko went missing while shopping, so he and the Rising Volt Tacklers went looking for her. However, Roy wandered off when his Wattrel ran to chase after a Corvisquire until they went to Levincia. After meeting up with Friede, Roy met Dot for the first time and went looking for Liko, being able to find her. Roy was then informed that Liko had her pendant stolen and they agreed to get it back. In the next episode, Roy and his friends found Spinel, the one who stole the object, and then battled him. After Liko got her pendant back, Roy and his friends made their escape thanks to Arboliva.

In Special Training Time!, Roy decided to train his Pokémon in teamwork in the hopes of helping his Fuecoco and Wattrel get along better, due to their constant arguing. Roy asked Captain Pikachu to battle them, which he accepted. However, due to Fuecoco and Wattrel's lack of teamwork, Roy lost the match. The boy then decided to train his Pokémon and was able to get them to work together. Next, he asked Cap for a rematch but, although Fuecoco and Wattrel's teamwork improved, Roy lost to Cap again.

In next episode, Roy and his friends got curious as to how Captain Pikachu was able to fly during his battle against him. Although they asked Friede for answers, they couldn't get the information they wanted. However, Roy and his friends refused to give up and they decided to ask the rest of the members, but couldn't get an answer from them either. Despite this, Roy and his friends' curiosity did get the rest of the members curious as well. Eventually, Orla was able to convince Friede into telling them as to how he met Captain Pikachu and the formation of the Rising Volt Tacklers.

In Kabu's Battle Training!, Roy arrived at Motostoke Stadium with Liko in order to get some information about the Black Rayquaza from Motostoke Gym Leader Kabu, due to him being from Hoenn. However, Roy and Liko received some training from Kabu before having a Multi Battle against him. Despite Fuecoco learning Flamethrower, Roy lost to Kabu while Liko forfeited because she felt bad for her opponent, Wakaba. After the battle, Roy and Liko found out from Kabu that the Black Rayquaza was at the Galar Mine.

In Charge! Galar Mine!, Roy, Liko, and Friede arrived at the Galar Mine, but the former two got separated from Friede. While trying to find the Black Rayquaza, the two encountered the Explorers again in the process. During the battle, Roy and Liko met a Galarian Moltres that had an Ancient Poké Ball, which got him to realize that it was one of Lucius's Pokémon. Unfortunately, they were forced to retreat when Moltres proved to be too strong and Captain Pikachu was injured as they left the mine. In the next episode, Roy and Liko arrived at the Pokémon Center in Motostoke where they reunited with Friede and agreed to battle Moltres again. After finding Moltres again at the Galar Mine, Roy battled the Legendary Pokémon again in order to calm it down. After Moltres calmed down, Roy witnessed the Legendary Pokémon return to its Ancient Poké Ball, as Liko took it under her care.

In Reunion at the Ancient Castle!, Roy, Liko, and Friede arrived at Hammerlocke in order to find an ancient castle that Diana, Liko's grandmother, was at. Through her Squawkabilly, Roy and his friends were able to find her. They hung out at the castle until the Explorers, who have been following them, arrived at their location. In the next episode, Roy and Liko tried to escape the Explorers, but were forced to battle Zirc and Onia, which was interrupted by the arrival of Coral and Sidian. After the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers arrived, Roy and his friends were able to escape from the Explorers.

In Song Within the Mist, Roy joined his friends and Ludlow in finding a Lapras, who happened to be one of Lucius's Pokémon, after they got a lead from a ship crew that saw the Transport Pokémon. Fortunately, Roy, Liko, Dot, and Ludlow were able to find Lapras, but they failed to get it to come out, as it was covered by the Mist and two Pokémon appeared on the ship. When Friede devised a plan to get Lapras back, Roy and Liko stayed on the deck to wait for the Transport Pokémon. Thanks to Friede and Captain Pikachu, the two saw Lapras with battle scars and other various Pokémon on a Wailord, who also had scars as well. In the next episode, Roy joined Liko and Friede in going after Lapras and, after convincing it that they were friends, the Transport Pokémon returned to its Ancient Poké Ball and Liko took it under her care. However, before setting off, Roy and his friends witnessed the Black Rayquaza arriving at their location.

In Roar of the Black Rayquaza, Roy attempted to battle the Black Rayquaza, but couldn't because Amethio arrived to battle it and Terapagos transformed in order to protect its friends. However, after Terapagos collapsed and the Black Rayquaza left, Roy was depressed that he didn't get to battle the Legendary Pokémon. Fortunately, after doing a training battle with Liko against Diana, Roy cheered up and understood that he had a long way to go in order to battle the Black Rayquaza. In the next episode, Roy and Liko overheard Diana's intentions to continue traveling alone. They decided to organize a surprise farewell party for her. Through the help of their teammates, Roy and Liko surprised Diana with the party, which she appreciated. Once they bid farewell to Diana, the Rising Volt Tacklers resumed their search for the remaining Six Heroes. However, Roy was informed by Friede that they were heading to Paldea first in order to gain information on Terapagos.

In Fuecoco…Becomes a Crook?!, the Rising Volt Tacklers took on a job to deal with a group of Sandile, Krokorok, and Krookodile that were disturbing some archeologists. Roy and Fuecoco eventually found the group and quickly befriended them upon learning they were a family trying to protect their Eggs. When the archeologists' digging equipment disturbed the young Sandile, Krookodile and the Krokorok went on a rampage in order to destroy the machinery. By learning Disarming Voice, Fuecoco managed to calm its new friends down. Afterward, once the situation was explained to both parties, Krookodile and its family agreed to work alongside the archeologists.

In Transform! Hero of the Seas, Palafin, the Rising Volt Tacklers successfully returned to Paldea. In the following episode, Roy and Liko were challenged to a battle by Coral and Sidian, respectively. Fuecoco struggled to land any hits on Coral's Glalie due to it freezing the battlefield, but upon noticing Fuecoco's growing frustration, Roy commanded it to use Stomping Tantrum, creating an ice fence that sent Glalie flying. Impressed by her opponents' determination, Coral decided to stop holding back, only to be forcibly pulled away by Sidian for a mission involving the Black Rayquaza.

In The Plan to Capture Rayquaza, Coral, Sidian, and Chalce used a machine capable of recreating Terapagos's energy to summon the Black Rayquaza. While Dot worked on a shutdown program for the machine, Roy and Liko used their Pokémon to keep the Explorers distracted. Their efforts worked, but after Dot shut the machine down, Coral lost her temper and commanded her Glalie to use Self-Destruct. The attack collided with Rayquaza's Dragon Pulse, creating an explosion powerful enough to blast the Sky High Pokémon directly into the hull of the Brave Olivine.

Roy and Nemona

In From So Far Away, the ship was safely docked while the Explorers retreated, realizing their operation was a failure. Hoping to convey Terapagos's desire to reach Laqua, Roy, Liko, Friede, and Dot challenged Rayquaza to a battle, which it readily accepted. Amethio later joined the fray and teamed up with Friede, with them Terastallizing Ceruledge and Charizard, respectively, but both were eventually defeated by a devastating Dragon Ascent. Roy and Liko confronted Rayquaza next, but despite Fuecoco learning Flame Charge and Sprigatito evolving into Floragato, they were unable to do much against the Sky High Pokémon. After Rayquaza took off, the Rising Volt Tacklers regrouped. While the Brave Olivine underwent repairs, Roy, Liko, and Dot decided to become stronger by learning how to use the Terastal phenomenon as well.

In Welcome to Naranja Academy!, Roy, Liko, and Dot were enrolled in Naranja Academy as part of the Tera Training course. They each received a Tera Orb and were tasked with battling the Paldea Gym Leaders as part of their Tera Training. To Roy's excitement, Brassius was chosen as his opponent. Roy also met Ann, Liko's friend from Indigo Academy. After watching Liko and Ann battle, Roy and his friends set off for Liko's battle against Katy in Cortondo.

In Sparkle! The Glow of Fire and Art!, Roy, Liko, and Dot arrived in Artazon. Roy's basic aptitude test was temporarily postponed due to the town having its annual Artazon Art Festival. In the meantime, Roy faced Nemona in a battle, but was defeated. Frustrated, Roy asked to rematch Nemona, only for Brassius to suggest Roy participate in the festival in order to realize why he lost. Together, Roy and Fuecoco made a clay Charizard sculpture capable of breathing fire provided by Fuecoco's Flamethrower. This allowed Roy to realize he was failing to utilize any opportunity and resources in battles, impressing Brassius as a result. During his rematch with Brassius, Roy properly used strategies to see through Brassius's tactics, then defeated him after Terastallizing Fuecoco for the first time.

In Wattrel's High Wind Warning!, while looking for wild Pokémon to make a research report on, Roy noticed that Wattrel still struggled to fly properly in strong winds. That night, Roy and Fuecoco found that Wattrel had left their tent to go train in secret. The three also encountered Ryme, a Trainer Roy bonded with over their shared love of music. The following morning, Roy found a wild Capsakid had gotten stuck on a cliff. Remembering the words of encouragement Ryme gave it earlier, Wattrel worked up the courage to fly down and save the Capsakid despite the strong winds blowing in the area. When Roy slipped and fell off the ledge he was standing on, Wattrel immediately rushed in to save its Trainer, evolving into Kilowattrel in the process.

Roy and Brassius

In Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four, Roy, Liko, and Dot participated in the Elite Four Tag Battle alongside the respective Gym Leaders they battled in their basic aptitude tests. Roy and Fuecoco teamed up with Brassius and his Dolliv to battle Hassel's Baxcalibur and Flapple. Although both Trainers creatively combined their Pokémon's moves in a variety of ways, Fuecoco and Dolliv were eventually taken out by a Thermal Exchange-boosted Glaive Rush from Baxcalibur. Despite the loss, Roy promised Nemona that he would keep improving as a Trainer so he could one day face her in another battle.

In The Terapagos I Don't Know, Roy, Liko, Dot, and Friede met with Clavell and Geeta, hoping to learn more about Terapagos from them. Although they didn't have much knowledge on the subject, Clavell and Geeta revealed that a sketch in the Scarlet Book depicted a third form of Terapagos. Later, Roy and the others met another teacher, Raifort, who provided them with some information on Laqua. Afterward, the students were each assigned a second Gym Leader to face as part of the implementation tests. Roy was paired with Ryme in Montenevera, but the group decided to head to Medali first for Dot's battle against Larry.

In Resonating Spirits in a Challenge to Ryme!, Roy and his friends arrived in Montenevera, where they reunited with Nemona. After defeating MC Sledge and his Sableye, Roy faced Ryme in a rap battle, where he impressed the Gym Leader with his skills. In the Terastal battle, Roy sent out Kilowattrel against Ryme's Houndstone, but it was quickly defeated. He then switched it out for Fuecoco, who managed to take out Houndstone after being encouraged by their song. When Ryme switched in her Toxtricity, it used its moves and Punk Rock Ability to negate all of Fuecoco's attacks. Backed into a corner, Roy Terastallized Fuecoco, but they were unable to launch a single attack before Toxtricity defeated them. Ryme scolded Roy for failing to utilize Fuecoco's strengths properly, failed him, and told Roy to challenge her again at a later time.

In A New Song for Fuecoco, Roy and Fuecoco participated in Nemona's Hyper Training session to prepare for their rematch with Ryme. While taking a break, Roy explained to the others how his love of singing came from the songs he and his parents sung together before they left on a long voyage together. Once their training had finished, Roy returned to Ryme and faced her in another battle. With a new song they created together, Roy and Fuecoco fared much better against Toxtricity, even forcing Ryme to Terastallize it. Eventually, Toxtricity was taken out by Fuecoco's Tera-boosted Flamethrower, giving Roy the victory and a passing grade on his exam. Afterward, Roy admitted that his and Fuecoco's song isn't for making them stronger in battle, it symbolizes the bond he and Fuecoco share. Ryme congratulated Roy on his victory, but noted how it's up to him whether or not Fuecoco reaches its full potential.

Roy battling Liko in the Tera Training Student Battle Tournament

In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, Roy, Liko, and Dot returned to the Naranja Academy, where Nemona informed them of the upcoming Tera Training Student Battle Tournament to celebrate the end of the Tera Training course. Roy was then informed by Dot that the Explorers were trying to hack into the academy's systems to steal information on Terapagos. After splitting up, Roy found Coral and challenged her. Roy soon took the fight outside the classroom, to prevent the destruction of the students' artworks, while Coral followed in pursuit. After a clash of power between Fuecoco's Flamethrower and Glalie's Blizzard, the boy encouraged his Partner Pokémon, who ultimately outclassed his opponent and defeated Glalie, forcing Coral to retreat in anger. Later, after reuniting with Liko and Dot, the three were informed by Dendra that both Roy and Liko are set to battle each other next. After a couple of switches, both Kilowattrel and Hattrem were down, leaving only their first partner Pokémon remaining. Encouraged by the collective chanting of his Trainer, Ryme, and the crowd, Fuecoco evolved into Crocalor. Then, Roy and Liko both Terastallized their Pokémon, but Crocalor prevailed and defeated Floragato, making Roy the winner.

Following the end of the Tera Training course, Roy, Liko, and Dot reunited with the rest of the Rising Volt Tacklers in Into a New Sky! The Brave Olivine!. After Liko received Lucius's belt back from Friede, Roy was challenged by Lucius's Moltres, who wanted to test his strength as a Trainer at the end of his Tera Training. After exchanging a couple of attacks, Roy Terastallized Crocalor and had him use an enhanced Flame Charge, which Moltres withstood, but still seemed content with their growth before returning to its Poké Ball soon after.

Before they left Naranja Academy, Raifort informed them about Briar, a Terapagos researcher currently stationed in the land of Kitakami, so the Rising Volt Tacklers decided to head there next. Roy, Liko, Dot, and Friede arrived at the Crystal Pool in Encounters at the Crystal Pool, where Briar was at, according to Carmine. After calming a wild Terastallized Milotic down, Liko's group and Briar discussed about Terapagos, its forms, and its connection to Area Zero. Once night fell, Briar suggested using the Crystal Pool's special properties and Terapagos's memories about Lucius to summon him and find some answers, but nothing happened. Afterward, they bid farewell to Briar and returned to the Brave Olivine, without any leads regarding Terapagos or the Six Heroes until Dot ran into Perrin, a photographer who snapped a photo of Lucius's Kleavor in Tengu Mountain, though she couldn't remember the exact place.

Roy, Liko Dot, Friede, and Perrin arrived in Tengu Mountain in The Search for Kleavor!. Roy ended up separated from the others after he and Crocalor fell into an underground cave, but they managed to find their way out and counted on Kilowattrel to take them up the mountain. Eventually, the group reunited near a Dugtrio-shaped rock, where Dot identified Perrin's photo had been taken. In the following episode, once Roy and the others successfully tracked Kleavor down, Lapras emerged from her Poké Ball to greet her old friend. Liko and Lapras asked Kleavor to join them on their quest, to which it responded by entering a nearby cave. Roy, Liko, and Dot traversed the cave, eventually finding Kleavor waiting for them inside a bamboo grove. Realizing Kleavor aimed to test their might, Roy and the others accepted its challenge and sent out their Pokémon to face it. After a long battle over various terrains, Kleavor emerged victorious over Roy, Liko, and Dot's Terastallized Pokémon. Despite their loss, Kleavor acknowledged Roy and the others' strength and returned to its Ancient Poké Ball.

the Rising Volt Tacklers battle Rayquaza again

After following leads from Wy-Yes and Siskel, the Rising Volt Tacklers found what was presumed to be Lucius's Entei in Entei's Fierce Battle Cry!, in an archipelago off the Olivine City coast. Although they failed to defeat it, Entei still recognized their strength, but was revealed to be a wild Pokémon unrelated to the Six Heroes.

The Rising Volt Tacklers' search for Lucius's Entei led them to Paldea's Pokémon League building in Over the Top!, after Briar notified them about recent sightings of an Entei in Area Zero. In order for Roy, Liko, and Dot to be granted access to the area, they were tasked with defeating Geeta's Pokémon, consisting of a Glimmora and two Glimmet, in a battle. In the end, only Floragato and Glimmora remained, with Liko's Pokémon barely managing to win thanks to Overgrow activating. Having been granted permission, the children searched around Area Zero for Entei alongside Friede and Briar until it decided to appear before them in The Pillar of Fire, revealing itself to actually be a Gouging Fire. Eventually, after an intense battle, the Rising Volt Tacklers earned Gouging Fire's trust. In the following episode, the children and Friede battled once more against the Black Rayquaza after it had been summoned to Area Zero by the other heroes. Despite putting up a tough fight, Rayquaza was still able to endure their assault and retaliate, leaving only Roy's Crocalor and Pagogo, in its Terastal Form, standing. After being hit by a Dragon Ascent, Pagogo chose to share its Terastal energy with Crocalor, allowing it to Terastallize and weaken Rayquaza enough for it to go inside its Ancient Poké Ball. Having achieved his goal of catching Rayquaza, Roy decided to have the Legendary Pokémon acknowledge him to be worthy of being its Trainer.

With the Six Heroes gathered, the Rising Volt Tacklers headed towards Laqua, guided by Rayquaza. Roy, Liko, Dot, and Friede finally arrived there in The Pokémon Paradise of Laqua! and were ambushed by the Explorers, who were following them for a while. Once again, Roy faced off against Coral, this time against her Scream Tail, and managed to win without resorting to Terastallization even when his opponent did it. When Zirc and Onia arrived in Guided by the Black Rayquaza!, the young Rising Volt Tacklers were able to proceed to Laqua's previously sealed off area, where they discovered that Lucius was still alive. While Pagogo and Six Heroes gathered power to purify Laqua of Laquium, the children, alongside Amethio, Terastallized their main Pokémon in preparation for a showdown against Gibeon and the White Zygarde. The battle begun in the following episode and was initially very one-sided, with the Order Pokémon being so powerful that they weren't able to deal notable damage even when exploiting a weakness. With a Land's Wrath, Zygarde defeated Crocalor and Quaxwell, and left Floragato and Ceruledge on their last legs. Once Floragato evolved into Meowscarada and managed to knock Zygarde down, the Legendary Pokémon forfeited the battle, revealing it was actually testing the strength and resolve of Liko and her friends all along, before disassembling and abandoning Gibeon due to his actions.

In Where the Adventure Leads, after Pagogo, in its Stellar Form, purified Laqua with the help of the Six Heroes, Roy witnessed Lucius fading away. Though the situation seemed over, Spinel used some Laquium mist he had stored on the Six Heroes, causing them to go berserk, except for Rayquaza. The rampaging heroes began attacking both friend and foe, causing the earth below everyone to become unstable and collapse. Rayquaza shielded Roy and the others with its body before urging them to flee the area. With Roy's Kilowattrel and Friede's Charizard, the group was able to reach the Brave Olivine, but soon faced a heavy loss when Friede and his Charizard were blown off by the heavy winds, leaving their fate unknown.

Roy battling Ann

Roy and the others eventually returned to Mount Pericarp to look for Friede, only to find that Exceed had the area blocked off. With Spinel framing Laqua's destruction on the Rising Volt Tacklers, the group decided to lay low and go their separate ways, dropping him back to Kanto. In the year following these events, Roy took custody of Captain Pikachu and somehow caught a yellow Lucario in his travels. In that same year, Roy met and trained alongside Uruto in Kalos, which led to both becoming rivals, acquiring Mega Rings, and mastering Mega Evolution.

One year after Where the Adventure Leads, Roy received a message from Dot informing him about Laquium effects still existing worldwide. Roy and his rival Uruto both battled and defeated a Laquium-enhanced wild Slaking with their respective Pokémon, after which Roy left his rival behind to meet with Liko at Indigo Academy. Roy then showed up at Indigo Academy, meeting up with Liko for the first time in a year. He then battled and defeated both Ann and Liko. After that, Liko then decided to join Roy and Dot in exposing the truth about the events at Laqua and clearing the Rising Volt Tacklers' name.

In HZ095, Roy and Liko went to an Exceed facility after their battle with a Laquium-enhanced Vileplume in the last episode, figuring it might have something to do with its Laquium infection. Roy and Liko then battled Coral and Sidian, only to be defeated by their Laquium-enhanced opponents before either of them could Terastallize their Partner Pokémon. Afterwards, both Trainers were saved by Uruto, who managed to hold the Explorers off and help them escape after Coral recklessly commanded Glalie to use Self-Destruct. Roy and Liko, now joined by Uruto, then proceeded on traveling to a new destination ahead.

In HZ099, Roy and the others visited Orla at Karna's Poké Ball factory. While trying to convince Orla to aid them, Dot and the group find out through Uruto that Karna had been hired to manufacture shells for the Strong Spheres, oblivious to what they truly were. Two Exceed employees came to pick up their order, but when Uruto denied them, the Explorers members Indy and Rubella stepped in to take them by force. In the following episode, Roy, Uruto, Dot, and Liko teamed up to battle Indy and Rubella's Laquium-enhanced Paldean Tauros. By exploiting a weakness caused by the Laquium's effect, Roy and the others emerged victorious, forcing Indy and Rubella to retreat.

Later, after Orla had been convinced to fly on the airship once again, Roy and the others pitched in to help clean and repair the Brave Olivine. Once they were done, Mollie, Murdock, and Ludlow arrived to join as well. To everyone else's surprise, Uruto proudly stated he would be joining the Rising Volt Tacklers as their newest member. As they prepared to take off, Dot discovered a message from Friede revealing to everyone that he was alive and well, but was in hiding from the Explorers.

In HZ101, Roy, Liko, Dot, and Uruto met with Geeta and Clavell at Naranja Academy to discuss Laquium and how Exceed was exploiting its power for their own gain. They then talked about the same subject with Jacq, who promised to do his own investigation on how Laquium affects Pokémon. Later, after reuniting with Nemona, Roy faced her in a Double Battle, using Crocalor and Lucario against Nemona's Pawmot and Ribombee. During the climax of the battle, Roy Mega Evolved his Lucario and Nemona Terastallized her Pawmot into a Fighting-type, which ended the battle in a final clash between the two and the in the latter's defeat, resulting in Roy's victory.

Character

Roy and his grandfather

Roy is an upbeat and energetic boy who likes to go hunting for treasures. Adventurous by nature, Roy seeks to start a journey to meet Pokémon he has not seen and see the world, just like the fabled Ancient Adventurer he has heard about from his grandfather. Although he starts inexperienced about the inner workings of being a Pokémon Trainer, he is nonetheless adept at other related activities, such as building Secret Bases, and an expert in stone throwing, being able to ricochet pebbles for long distances to cut Berries from trees and create distractions, which makes his Poké Ball throws very accurate. Roy also seems to enjoy mysteries and doesn't rest until he’s solved them.

He is shown to enjoy singing and eating, especially berries and spicy food. Roy's enjoyment of berries and spicy flavored foods is also shown in his curry, as seen in As Long as I'm with My Friends, as most of the ingredients he uses are spicy flavored and berries. However, despite berries and spicy stuff being his favorite food, Roy does like certain other types of foods, such as sweets. Roy also gets excited to eat in general, as seen in The Bittersweet Truth, when he and Fuecoco got excited to eat all the sweets that Murdock and Mitchell made from their unexpected bake-off. In addition to being a good singer, Roy is a skilled rapper. As revealed in A New Song for Fuecoco, Roy's love for singing comes from his parents, as they used to sing together whenever he was with them on their cargo ship, and even long after they had left, he would bond with the island Pokémon this way. He continues to use his newfound passion for singing as a means to not only have fun but improve his bond with Fuecoco, as he came up with a new song and battle tactic that is less predictable and stronger than before, allowing him and Fuecoco to win their rematch against Ryme in the same episode and fully gaining her respect to the point where she hyped up the crowd along with Roy when him and Fuecoco starting singing during his battle against Liko in Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!.

Roy and his friends

After befriending and spending time with Fuecoco and Liko, Roy learns that the feelings of the Trainer and the Pokémon have to coincide in order for a partnership to be born. Roy is also shown to be passionate about Pokémon, particularly Legendary Pokémon, with his dream being to meet and battle them, much like the Ancient Adventurer, who managed to catch the Black Rayquaza. In addition, Roy would help any Pokémon in trouble as he would solve or work out their problems, especially his own. Due to living on an island for most of his life, Roy can get excited to see various places for the first time. However, despite this, Roy does have social skills as he isn't shy to talk with people or Pokémon. Although, Roy can be oblivious when it comes to the field of romance until someone points it out to him. Roy also enjoys being around nature, and often does his online classes in various spots on the island, with him deciding to make the battlefield on the Brave Olivine his main place to do them.

Roy and his parents

Roy shares a close relationship with his grandfather, as he raised and took care of him growing up. Since meeting Friede in The Treasure After the Storm!, Roy began to show admiration for him, as he looks up to him for both his skills and knowledge as Pokémon Trainer and Professor. Roy also takes inspiration from Friede, as seen in Special Training Time!, when he was inspired by his Pokémon training together and decided to do the same thing for his Pokémon. In addition, Roy seems to have a great relationship with the rest of his teammates. However, out of all of his teammates, Roy seems to have a special relationship with Liko and Dot, as he often hangs out with them and enjoys their company. Throughout their journey, they would support each other, usually training together to become both better Trainers and versions of themselves. Roy also would go to Liko and Dot for advice whenever he is stuck in a jam.

Ever since the events in The Ancient Poké Ball, Roy took an interest in Pokémon battles and enjoys them, but lacked experiences and tended to be reckless while relying on brute force. However, thanks to the help of others, Roy has shown gradual improvement in his skills. His potential as a battler even got the attention of Champion-ranked Trainer Nemona, which lead to them to developing a friendly rivalry, where she desires to battle him often and frequently watches his important battles as well as help him train for upcoming ones. Roy has also learned that having his Pokémon train with each other not only helps them become stronger, but also would help strengthen both their friendship and teamwork, as seen in Special Training Time!. In addition, Roy learns that failure in a Pokémon battle is part of a Trainers growth in order to improve. At first, Roy was only focusing on the battle and not everything around him. However, through Brassius's advice in Sparkle! The Glow of Fire and Art!, Roy realizes that using everything around him such as the environment and small details of Pokemon can help him in battle. Overtime, Roy has learnt to strategise and adapt better during battles to avoid becoming too predictable, getting caught off guard or overwhelmed by his opponent, allowing him to win more often. He also no longer panics during battles, remaining calm and confident while guiding his Pokémon. This is especially shown in Into a New Sky! The Brave Olivine! where he effortlessly commanded his Crocalor whenever he was scared or distressed against Lucius’s Moltres. However, Roy will still struggle to focus during a battle if something is genuinely weighing on his mind, as shown in Liko and Amethio, when Liko went missing, as he and Dot were unable to put a one hundread percent into their battle against the Explorers because they were worried about her safety.

Roy has shown to be somewhat of an amateur artist. His artistic ability is displayed whenever he crafted cardboard cutouts of Pokémon for training purposes as shown in Fly! Wattrel!! and in Fuecoco…Becomes a Crook?!, as well as when he and Fuecoco presented an impressive Charizard sculpture that represented their respective dreams during the Artazon Art Festival. This has allowed him to form a close mentor-student relationship with Brassius and even gain the respect of Hassel. His artistic nature is even shown in battle as seen in Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four when he combined his Fuecoco's moves with the moves of Brassius's Dolliv, creating a spectacular display. Additionally, his fondness and appreciation for art also stretches to the works of other people, like when he was the first to compliment Brassius’s Black Rayquaza sculpture in Nemona and Brassius and…, or when he moved his battle against Coral outside in Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger! to prevent the other students’ artworks from getting burnt during their fight.

Roy connecting with his Lucario through aura

As early as An Unexpected Picnic!, Roy has displayed an eagerness for taking photos on his Rotom Phone, wanting to capture special moments with his friends and Pokémon during his journey. This was later emphasised in Resonating Spirits in a Challenge to Ryme!, when he and Fuecoco looked back fondly at different photos that were taken up until that point, with Roy even getting another photo alongside his Pokémon partners and the wild Pokémon he befriended on Glaseado Mountain in the same episode.

Since losing Friede, the Rising Volt Tacklers disbanding after being framed by Spinel, and his year training in Kalos, Roy has noticeably matured, as he is much calmer and reserved, but still maintains his adventurous spirit. While he still pursues strength, he has developed a more principled and mission-focused demeanor and prioritizing protecting others over pursuing strength for the sake of it. Liko comments on how he appears more dependable than before. However, his relationship with his would-be rival Uruto is tenuous at best: while Roy respects Uruto's skill as a Trainer and tolerates his presence at times, he finds Uruto to be a nuisance and a liability who will only get in the way of his personal missions, and Roy's actions around him suggest he doesn't want to put up with him, even going so far as to keep him in the dark as to his reason for pursuing the Black Rayquaza and forcefully dragging Liko away from him when he goes on tirades about power. Roy also would be at odds with Uruto and teases him. Despite this, Roy does get along with Uruto and considers him a close friend.

After the Rising Volt Tacklers reformed in HZ100, Roy helps Captain Pikachu in making decisions during Friede's absence, as he and the rest of his teammates find out that he is still alive but in hiding from the Explorers. Roy also has help in Liko and Dot for making decisions for the group's destinations because the three of them are the reason the team reformed and Uruto joining the group as their newest member.

Pokémon

Roy's current party

Roy's team consists mainly of gluttons who had problems in the past, usually involving some form of insecurity: Crocalor was initially embarassed of singing in front of others and Kilowattrel was scared of heights. However, through his unorthodox methods, he was able to help his Pokémon overcome them and, by doing so, allowed them to truly grow. In their first stages, they used to look up to Friede's Charizard and Captain Pikachu, respectively, due to their shared types.

Furthermore, his Pokémon seemed to take on a particular role on the team as they developed: Crocalor and Lucario are Roy's main battlers, with Lucario's Mega Evolution in particular acting as the team's power equalizer against tougher opponents, while Kilowattrel acts mainly as aerial support. As of now, Captain Pikachu is traveling with Roy and isn't an official team member, but often contributes in tough battles with his greater experience and power. Roy's Pokémon seem to have a tight knit bond with each other.
