Hassel (Japanese: ハッサク Hassaku) is a member of the Elite Four of the Paldea region and the art teacher at Naranja AcademyS/Uva AcademyV. He specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon.

Appearance

Hassel is a male human with fair skin, blonde hair, faded gold eyes, and an average build. His attire features a white dress shirt with a red tie, a vest in satin black and red, a cadmium green coat where the rear sort of acts like a mini-cape, gray pants, and polished satin black dress shoes with red diamond shaped markings.

In the core series games

Hassel is a descendant of a long line of Dragon-type Trainers in an unnamed faraway region. He ran away from home as a youth to pursue a dream of "making music", before becoming a member of the Elite Four in the Paldea region as well as an art instructor at the academy. Hassel is shown to be friendly, but very emotional, as he bursts into tears of joy when defeated by the player. He is an old friend of Gym Leader Brassius of Artazon.

During his bond story, a Dragon Tamer arrives at the academy to get Hassel back home, claiming his father, the head of the family, is feeling ill, and Hassel should be taking his place as the head of the family. Through interactions with the player, Hassel gains the confidence to confront the Dragon Tamer, realizing her words about his father's deteriorating health were lies in another attempt to get him to come home and swearing to stay at the academy to teach.

In The Indigo Disk, Hassel can be invited to Blueberry Academy as a special coach. A conversation between him and Drayton reveals that Hassel knows his grandfather, Drayden.

Pokémon

Hassel will Terastallize his Baxcalibur at the first opportunity.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

In Sparkle! The Glow of Fire and Art!, Hassel and Nemona helped with some details of the annual Artazon Art Festival, during the event, he discovered that Liko is Alex's daughter. After taking Liko, Roy and Dot to meet with Brassius, Hassel evaluated the works of art constructed by his students and then watched Roy's Terastal battle against Brassius.

In Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four, Hassel took part in a Tag Battle against Roy and Brassius during the Elite Four Tag Battle, eventually winning the battle with his Baxcalibur and Flapple. Hassel then cried tears of joy upon seeing Roy's motivation to get stronger.

In Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!, Hassel and Brassius watched Roy's battle against Liko, Hassel praised Roy for his improved battling skills and was crying tears of joy when he won the match.

Hassel appeared in a fantasy in HZ096, while Liko, Roy, and Dot were talking about Dragon-type Trainers.

In the past, Hassel mentored Brassius during his times of insecurity with art. Hassel debuted in Discover! The Quaking Earth Titan!!. He and several other teachers were called to an emergency meeting by Clavell to discuss Violet, a new student that caused trouble during the Treasure Hunt's opening ceremony. Clavell informed the others of Violet's backstory and explained his behavior.

In PASV10, in order to help Scarlet on her quest to obtain the treasures of ruin, Brassius revealed that Hassel once asked him if he knew about the Ruinous Pokémon. Although he knew nothing about the subject, Brassius's information did help Scarlet figure out the treasures of ruin referred to a group of Pokémon.

Later, Hassel, along with Poppy, Rika, and Geeta, appeared outside the Treasure Eatery to greet Larry. Geeta explained that everyone came to investigate a report the Pokémon League received claiming that Larry attacked some Trainers unprovoked, though noted it was likely false. Larry clarified the Trainers he fought were Team Star members harassing an Uva Academy student, which he noted was worse than their usual acts of misbehavior. When Geeta mentioned a fake student hired by Raifort to look for the treasures of ruin, Rika remembered seeing her with Scarlet previously and concluded that the latter was the fake student in question.

Ultra rare print of Hassel
Main article: Hassel (Twilight Masquerade 151)

Hassel was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Transformation Mask expansion and the English Twilight Masquerade expansion, with artwork by GOSSAN. An ultra rare version with artwork by the same illustrator was released in the same sets. This card can only be used if any of the player's Pokémon were Knocked Out during their opponent's last turn. It lets the player look at the top 8 cards of their deck and choose up to 3 of them to put into their hand. The other cards are then shuffled back into the deck.

Trivia

  • The back vent on Hassel's coat could be in reference to the capes worn by Dragon Tamers, whom Hassel has a history with, being a Dragon-type Trainer himself.
    • It might also be a nod to Clair and her design in Generation II due to how her cape resembles part of a suit.
  • Prior to the release of The Indigo Disk, Hassel was the only Paldean Elite Four member that could be rebattled indefinitely.
  • Hassel is left-handed, as shown when he throws his Poké Balls and in his official concept art painting a portrait of an Applin.
  • Hassel is also the only Trainer to use a Pokémon that is still capable of evolving in their League Club Room team, as Duraludon can evolve into Archaludon, while Ursaring, which is used by Katy, cannot evolve into Ursaluna in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
