Larry (Japanese: アオキ Aoki) is a businessman who works for the Paldea region's Pokémon League, where he serves as the Gym Leader of Medali's Gym, known officially as the Medali Gym, and a member of Paldea's Elite Four. He specializes in Normal-type Pokémon as a Gym Leader and Flying-type Pokémon as an Elite Four member.

In the core series games

Appearance

Larry is depicted as a tall, middle-aged man of average build. His most unique features belong to his face, with prominent cheekbones and eyebags, grayish-black eyes in the shape of squares (alongside his pupils), square black eyebrows and black hair with numerous gray quiffs shooting off from it.

Larry wears a light black suit, consisting of a blazer, trousers and formal shoes. His suit, shoes and suitcase are notably worn out. Beneath his suit is a gray long-sleeve button-downed shirt with a pale-blue tie with a cloud outline pattern, referencing his specialization as an Elite Four member. During the Elite Four battle, Larry will wear a sky blue long-sleeve button-downed shirt. Larry also has a pretty poor posture as shown by his slouched back.

As with every other member of the Elite Four of Paldea, Larry wears black gloves with the logo of Paldea's Pokémon League, which resembles a white compass, upon them.

Larry is always seen holding a black briefcase, which he puts down before battles.

Challenging the Medali Gym

Medali Gym Leader: Larry

(AKA the Exceptional Everyman)

"This Normal-type user is the middle of the pack when it comes to Gym Leaders. He has a day job helping run the Pokémon League, where he is not the best rated worker. He loves to eat."

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Website Blurb: This Normal-type Gym Leader is also a businessman, and he’s not very motivated. When he gets lost in thought, he becomes so still that onlookers begin to worry.

Larry is a serious, professional, brooding man who works for Paldea's Pokémon League under Geeta, who assigned him the roles of both a Gym Leader and Elite Four member. He also works as a businessman on top of his Pokémon League duties. In The Indigo Disk, it is revealed through his conversation with Ryme, that Larry was contracted for the redesign of the Montenevera battle court.[3] He mentions that he is strictly told to cut down on his overtime hours.[4] He sees being a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member as a part of his workload and he is not passionate about his day job and Pokémon battling. Larry is often unmotivated, and becomes unsettlingly still whenever he is lost in thought, much to the worry of people nearby.[5] Larry sees himself as an average, ordinary person and questions why Juliana/Florian would choose him as their favorite Gym Leader.[6] Larry intentionally hides his face in his Gym Leader profile picture because he wants to maintain a low profile and avoid the risk of attracting crowds.[7] Larry is noted to be very quiet, which results in Hassel to be unable to hear him from afar.[8] According to Iono in Pokémon: Paldean Winds, Larry has been a member of the Paldea League for 25 years.

He uses Normal-type Pokémon at his Gym because he feels they reflect his ordinary image.[9] In addition to the Gym Badge, Larry gives out TM025 (Facade) when defeated. During the Champion Assessment, he is the third Elite Four member to be faced and uses a team of Flying-type Pokémon per Geeta's request, much to his dismay.[10]

Outside of his Pokémon League duties, he is known for his fixation with food, and regularly visits the Treasure Eatery of Medali, which also serves as the arena for his Gym battles.

The Indigo Disk

After completing the main story, Larry can be invited to Unova's Blueberry Academy as a special coach. When challenged to a rematch, he battles as a Gym Leader, though he retains some Flying-type Pokémon from his team when battled as one of the Elite Four.

Larry may converse with other Trainers present in the League Club Room.

Pokémon

As a Gym Leader, Larry's team consists of Normal types, while he uses Flying types as an Elite Four member. In the rematch with him at the Blueberry Academy's League Club Room, his team will be made up of both Normal and Flying types. His signature Pokémon is Staraptor.

Larry in Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Larry debuted in a flashback in Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!, where he was seen eating at the Treasure Eatery while Friede met with Lucca there.

He physically debuted in Welcome to Naranja Academy!, where he and the other members of the Elite Four watched Liko's battle against Ann at Naranja Academy.

In Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four, Larry battled Coral and Kofu as part of the Elite Four Tag Battle, only for Coral to have her Glalie use Self-Destruct, knocking out all of their Pokémon and leaving Larry the winner by default.

In The Terapagos I Don't Know, Larry was assigned as Dot's next challenge for the Tera Training course.

In Food Fit for a Kingambit!, Larry appeared during the reopening of the new menu at Anything Goes Café. After the meal, he left without attracting much attention, but was noticed by Dot when he left.

In Dance, Quaxly! The Blue Medali Step!, Larry was Dot's opponent for her second Terastal battle, where he used both his Staraptor and Dudunsparce against Dot's Quaxly and Tinkatink. Even after Dot's Quaxly evolved into Quaxwell and put up a great fight by Terastallizing, Larry was still able to win by Terastallizing his Staraptor in turn and exploiting Quaxwell's paralysis. Despite her loss, Larry still approved Dot for her opportunistic use of Terastallization. Afterwards, when Dot and her friends ate some rice balls at the Treasure Eatery, Larry was forced to pay their bill, much to his dismay.

In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, Larry was seen talking with Geeta and Ryme during the Tera Training Student Battle Tournament taking place. In the next episode, Larry watched Liko and Roy's battle with Ryme in the audience. After the tournament, Larry exchanged nods with Dot before leaving.

Larry appeared again in Over the Top!, when the Rising Volt Tacklers appeared at the Pokémon League asking for permission to go to Area Zero, Larry appeared along with the other members of the Elite Four. Later, Larry watched Liko, Roy, and Dot's battle against Geeta along with the others present.

Character

Larry has a very brooding, serious, stoic and calm personality, rarely showing much emotions both in and out of battling. He prefers the simple things in life, including simple but delicious foods. This simple, stoic and calm nature befits him as a Normal-Type user, and he even tells his opponents not to underestimate Normal-type Pokemon in battle. Regarding food, Larry is a massive foodie much like in the video games. He loves going to various restaurants to eat and has a hearty appetite. He is also generous enough to treat other people for a meal, like with Liko, Roy and Dot, though he was dismayed upon having to pay the whole bill.

In battle, Larry is calm and focused as ever, calmly analyzing his opponents movements and not giving their Pokemon much time to recover, capitalizing on opportunities and status conditions to exploit his opponent's weaknesses. His strength is shown simply by being both a Gym Leader and Elite Four member at the same time, just like in the video games. Larry is humble in victory and even passed Dot for her battle tactics and improved skills despite her losing, showcasing his judge of a person's skills.

Pokémon

Similar to the games, Larry uses two completely different teams of Pokémon, one team for challenges as a Gym Leader and another for battles as an Elite Four member.

This listing is of Larry's known Pokémon in Pokémon Horizons: The Series:

As a Gym Leader
Dudunsparce
Larry's Dudunsparce

Dudunsparce is Larry's third known Pokémon. It was used during Dot's Tera Training test, where it faced both Quaxly and Tinkatink. It was able to gain the upper hand on Quaxly when it paralyzed him with Glare. It then battled Tinkatink before being recalled in favor of Staraptor after their attacks seemed evenly matched.

Dudunsparce's known moves are Glare, Boomburst, and Hyper Drill.

Staraptor Normal Tera Type
Larry's Staraptor
Larry's Terastallized Staraptor

Staraptor is Larry's fourth known Pokémon and his ace. It was used to battle Tinkatink and Quaxly during Dot's Tera Training test battle, where it was swapped in to replace Dudunsparce and quickly defeated Tinkatink. Despite receiving major damage from Dot's newly evolved Quaxwell, it was still able to defeat him after Terastallizing while Quaxwell was immobilized by paralysis.

Staraptor's known moves are Wing Attack, Hurricane, Air Slash, and Facade.

As an Elite Four member
Flamigo
Larry's Flamigo

Flamigo is Larry's first known Pokémon. It was used alongside Oricorio in his battle against Coral and Kofu, only to be defeated when Coral's Glalie used Self-Destruct.

None of Flamigo's moves are known.

Oricorio
Larry's Oricorio

Oricorio is Larry's second known Pokémon. It was used alongside Flamigo in his battle against Coral and Kofu, only to be defeated when Coral's Glalie used Self-Destruct.

Pokémon Adventures

Larry debuted in PASV17. He was first seen at the Treasure Eatery, grabbing a Rotom Phone Penny left behind when she left the building. He went outside to return it, only to find Penny surrounded by a group of Team Star Grunts. The Grunts used their Pokémon to attack Larry, but were easily defeated, giving Penny to opportunity to flee.

The following day, Violet and Arven went to have lunch at the Treasure Eatery, only to find the building closed. The employees explained that a co-worker went missing while passing through Asado Desert to buy ingredients at Porto Marinada. Assuming this was the work of the Quaking Earth Titan, Violet and Arven promised to find the employee. They were stopped by Larry, who noted that he heard rumors about Violet and Arven's accomplishments in taking down the various Titans and wished to test their skills as Trainers.

After Violet was forced to register at the Medali Gym, he and Larry faced each other in a Gym battle at the Treasure Eatery. Violet eventually emerged victorious after taking out Larry's Terastallized Staraptor. Accepting his loss, Larry recognized that Violet and Arven were truly as strong as the rumors suggested and allowed them to go face the Titan. Larry saw the boys off, but was then confronted by his fellow Elite Four members and Geeta, the Top Champion. Geeta explained that they came to investigate a report to the Pokémon League claiming Larry attacked some Trainers unprovoked, but quickly dismissed it as false. Larry told the others that the Trainers he supposedly attacked were members of Team Star and that they were harassing an Uva Academy student, which he noted was worse than their usual acts of misbehavior.

Pokémon

Komala
Larry's Komala

Komala is Larry's first known Pokémon. It was first used to prevent Violet from escaping his battle with Larry by hitting Miraidon with its saliva, instantly making it fall asleep. Later, it was used to battle against Violet's Lokix but lost.

None of Komala's moves are known.

Staraptor Normal Tera Type
Larry's Staraptor
Larry's Terastallized Staraptor

Staraptor is Larry's second known Pokémon. It was first used to forcibly carry Violet and Arven to the Medali Gym so the former could register for his battle with Larry. Later, it was Larry's third choice in his battle with Violet. Despite being Terastallized to remove its weakness to Rock-type moves, Staraptor fell after Violet turned his Clodsire into a Rock-type to make its Rock Slide stronger.

None of Staraptor's moves are known.

Dudunsparce
Larry's Dudunsparce

Dudunsparce is Larry's third known Pokémon. It was Larry's second choice in his battle with Violet. After defeating Violet's Lokix, it went up against his Smoliv, who covered its body in oil to make Dudunsparce's moves slip off, reducing the damage they dealt. Dudunsparce put Smoliv to sleep, only for it to retaliate with a Sleep Talk-Flail combination, knocking Dudunsparce out.

Dudunsparce's known moves are Hyper Drill and Take Down.

Ultra rare print of Larry
Main article: Larry (Paradox Rift 165)

Larry was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Raging Surf subset and the English Paradox Rift expansion, with artwork by Akira Komayama. A Full Art ultra rare version with artwork by the same illustrator was released in the same sets. It allows players to flip a coin and search their deck for up to 2 Pokémon of any kind if they flip heads, or 1 Basic Pokémon if they flip tails.

Trivia

  • Larry's Japanese Gym Leader title is 非凡サラリーマン.
  • As both a Gym Leader and an Elite Four member, Larry is the first character in the games to fill two different positions in the same Pokémon League simultaneously.
  • Larry's specialization in Flying types is hinted at by the cloud patterns on his tie and his ace Pokémon as a Gym Leader being part Flying-type.
    • Him specializing in both Normal and Flying types is likely a reference to how the Normal/Flying type combination is the most common type combination amongst dual-type Pokémon.
  • Larry is the only Paldean Gym Leader in the core series to:
    • Terastallize a Pokémon already of his type specialization.
    • Terastallize more than one Pokémon.
    • Battle inside a building instead of outdoors.
  • During the Champion Assessment, Larry's Altaria does not know any Flying-type moves, making Larry the only member of the Paldean Elite Four to use a Pokémon that does not know any moves with the specialty type of its Trainer.
  • During his Gym battle, Larry's Dudunsparce is female, but during the rematch, it is male.
  • During the battle at the League Club at Blueberry Academy, Larry's team uses a mixture of both Normal and Flying types.
  • In Pokémon Horizons: The Series, Larry's Staraptor shares three of the same Flying-type moves with Lucius's Moltres: Wing Attack, Hurricane, and Air Slash.
  • In the fourth episode of Pokémon: Paldean Winds, Iono confirms that Larry has been part of the Pokémon League for 25 years.
