Grusha (Japanese: グルーシャ Grusha) is the Gym Leader of Glaseado Mountain's Gym, known officially as the Glaseado Gym. He specializes in Ice-type Pokémon.

In the core series games

Before being the Gym Leader of Glaseado Gym, Grusha used to be a professional snowboarder,[3] and the second best in the world — at one point having won six times in a row at Paldean major competitions. He was forced to retire from the sport after sustaining an injury from an accident. He usually keeps his cool, but will show his hidden emotions in the heat of battle.[3] Because being a Gym Leader is the only thing he has left, he is overly worried about maintaining his position, creating some discomfort around Geeta. After the player defeats him in a rematch during a Gym Inspection, Grusha regains his former determined side, intrigued by the player's skills.

In addition to the Gym Badge, Grusha gives out TM124 (Ice Spinner) after defeating him.

In The Indigo Disk, Grusha can be invited to Blueberry Academy as a special coach.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Grusha first appeared in silhouette alongside the other Gym Leaders of Paldea in Welcome to Naranja Academy! during Clavell's explanation of how Tera Training works.

Grusha debuted properly in Liko vs. Rika! Towards the Battle's End. He watched Liko and Katy battling against Rika and later exchanged brief words with Liko about her spirit during said battle. In the following episode, Grusha was assigned as Liko's second opponent as part of the Tera Training course.

In A New Song for Fuecoco, Grusha was seen watching Roy and Ryme's Tera Training battle in the middle of the crowd. After the battle ended, he left silently.

In Ice Battle! Cold-Eyed Grusha, Grusha was seen with his Cetoddle when he met with Liko again after witnessing her bobsledding on another Cetoddle. Grusha was unamused about Liko having fun before her test and thought she wasn't taking it seriously. It was soon revealed that in the past, Grusha used to be a pro snowboarder, but was forced to retire early from an injury. He then focused on his Gym Leader duties with a cold-hearted attitude, becoming Paldea's strongest Gym Leader.

Liko and Grusha's battle commenced soon afterwards, but despite Liko doing her best, she still lost without defeating either of his Pokémon. Afterwards, Grusha declared that Liko had failed her test, as he refused to pass anyone who couldn't defeat him. He also told her he wasn't willing to give her a rematch before leaving.

Grusha reappeared in Liko and Amethio, where it was revealed that Friede contacted him to help search for Liko. He helped Roy and Dot fend off Sidian and Coral's Pokémon with his Altaria, forcing the Explorers admins to retreat. Afterwards he commanded his Altaria to destroy a rock that separated Liko from her friends, finding Liko and Floragato and reuniting them with their friends. After Liko thanked Grusha for his help, Grusha soon left on his way.

In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, Grusha was in the Naranja Academy Library with his Cetoddle, when he noticed a security guard had been attacked and had been healed by Liko's Hattrem. Following Hattrem, he saw Liko's battle against Sidian and thought of assisting her, but Hattrem had him stay put and watch. After witnessing Liko's victory, he told her to meet him in the staff room. Liko feared she would be punished for Terastallizing despite not passing her test, but to her surprise Geeta and Clavell revealed that Grusha had passed her, due to her bravery and heroic actions which protected the school and showed the results of her training. Grusha additionally apologized to Liko for misjudging her strength and congratulated her. Grusha further noted how Liko's true strength as a trainer shines through when fighting for the sake of others.

In Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!, Grusha saw Liko's battle against Roy during the Tera Training Student Battle Tournament. After the battle, Grusha encouraged Liko to not give up despite her loss and to get stronger as a trainer.

Character

Considered the strongest Gym Leader in the Paldea League, Grusha is a perfectionist, not allowing mistakes in his assessments and battles. Grusha is considered the pride of Glaseado Mountain, both for his achievements as a snowboarder and as a Gym Leader.

Although he partially recovered from the accident, Grusha eventually retired from competition, focusing solely on his career as a Gym Leader. His reason for leaving the sport remained a mystery, although some locals believed it was because he could no longer achieve the same results as before.

Despite his cold and strict personality, Grusha is a kind and compassionate person deep down, as he was willing to answer Friede's calls to help find Liko and saved Roy and Dot from the Explorers admins as seen in Liko and Amethio. He is also capable of honor and respect, as he approved of Liko's battling skills after her victory against Sidian, passing her test for her heroic actions and apologizing to her for misjudging her strength as a trainer.

Cetoddle is Grusha's first known Pokémon and his first partner Pokémon. While it was still wild, Cetoddle walked onto a course where Grusha was competing in a snowboarding race, causing him fall over and get injured. After recovering, Grusha consoled Cetoddle for mistakenly causing his injury and added it to his team. It can usually be seen outside its Poké Ball, following Grusha around. It cheered on its Trainer during Liko's Tera Training test battle.

In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, Cetoddle accompanied Grusha to Naranja Academy. Both then encountered Liko's Hattrem healing a security guard and his Psyduck before following her to where Liko was. Cetoddle and its Trainer then witnessed Liko's victory against Sidian.

In HZ103, Cetoddle accompanied Grusha to the event that Nidothing and Iono held in Levincia. After Grusha was approached by Onia, it was petted by the Explorer.

None of Cetoddle's moves are known.

Altaria is Grusha's second known Pokémon and his ace in battle. During Liko's Tera Training test, it went up against Floragato after Cetitan was swapped out. It mostly had the advantage of flight until Floragato grabbed its legs with her vine and brought it crashing down with Acrobatics. Both Altaria and Floragato were soon Terastallized by their respective Trainers. A clash between Terastallization-boosted attacks followed, which eventually resulted in Floragato's defeat, causing Liko to lose the battle.

In Liko and Amethio, Altaria was used to fend off Coral's Glalie, which resulted in the Explorer admins retreating. Altaria then destroyed the boulder separating the path between Liko and her friends to reunite them.

Altaria's known moves are Moonblast and Ice Beam.

Cetitan is Grusha's third known Pokémon. It was used during Liko's Tera Training test battle against him, taking on her Floragato, who was swapped out for Hattrem. Hattrem put up a decent fight and dealt some damage to it, but Cetitian ultimately overpowered and defeated her. It then went up against Floragato once again, but this time, it was incapacitated when it choked on her Magical Leaf flurry. Cetitan was then swapped out in favor of Altaria.

Cetitan's known moves are Icicle Spear, Ice Spinner, and Liquidation.

Grusha was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released in the Japanese Snow Hazard expansion and the English Paldea Evolved expansion, with artwork by GIDORA. An ultra rare version with artwork by the same artist, and a special illustration rare version of the card with artwork by DOM were released in the same sets. It allows players to draw cards until they have 5 cards in their hand, unless they have no Energy attached to any of their Pokémon; in which case the player draws cards until they have 7 cards in their hand.
