Iono (Japanese: ナンジャモ Nanjyamo[3]) is an influencer and streamer who is the Gym Leader of Levincia's Gym, known officially as the Levincia Gym. She specializes in Electric-type Pokémon. She hands out the Electric Badge to Trainers who defeat her.

In the core series games

Role

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Iono first appears when the player takes on her Gym Test, hosting a livestream titled "Where in Levincia is Mr. Walksabout?" While on stream, the player must find Director Clavell in various locations in the city. During the Gym battle, Iono is still shown to be streaming, and upon being defeated, Iono gives out the Electric Badge and the TM for Volt Switch.

After the player becomes Champion, Iono will still be at her Gym, anticipating a visit from Geeta for a Gym inspection. She is surprised to find the player carrying out the inspection instead, but will nonetheless readily challenge the player to a battle. Once defeated, she will request that the player tell Geeta what a sensation she was during the battle.

In The Indigo Disk, Iono can appear in the Blueberry Academy League Club as a special coach, and can be found speaking with Brassius, Larry, Tulip, Grusha, Clavell, or Salvatore. In her conversations with the player, she reveals that she's taking this opportunity at the academy for her next stream, coming up with the title “Gym Leader Iono INFILTRATES this WEIRD ACADEMY! You won’t BELIEVE what she finds!”[4] She then asks the player what her focus should be on, and if the player suggests the director, Cyrano, she describes how risky it could be to bring on a "snoozer guest", and how it'd be a "Top 10 Iono Betrayals moment..."[5] If suggested in their initial meeting, Iono will report back on her second visit to the League Club that Cyrano's appearance made her viewer count rise dramatically due to his natural charisma.[6] After beating her in a rematch, she will give the player the Iono Zone Case as a gift, which she describes as an "SSS-tier drop!"[7]

Character

Iono in the "Iono Zone"

Iono is a popular streamer and influencer from the Paldea region who runs the Iono Zone (Japanese: ドンナモンジャTV Donnamonja TV) livestream, where she showcases her work as a Gym Leader.[8] She prioritizes viewer engagement[9] and frequently collaborates with other popular figures, such as Tulip, though these collaborations can sometimes affect her self-esteem,[10] and she doesn't like being rejected.[11] Despite her overwhelming popularity making it difficult to go unnoticed,[12] she reveals to Larry that she enjoys the attention.[13]

She is known for her unique habit of mixing languages, a quirk called "Iono-ese" by her and her fans. Her popularity has caught the attention of various significant figures, including Salvatore, who mentions her in his language class, and Grusha, who was a fan of her earlier content before she focused more on clicks and sponsorships. Iono no longer reads the comments on her streams due to negative feedback from certain fans.[14] Salvatore, however, has a more positive relationship with her, affectionately calling her "Mademoiselle Magnemite".[15] Her fans, known as the "Iono Hype Squad", often refer to her as "Miss Iono", while Tulip calls her "Nono".[10] Iono herself calls her fans "Iono Zoners" or simply "chat".[16][17] She's aware that many of her most loyal fans are students, including those attending Blueberry Academy.[18][19][20]

Often valuing her viewers' reactions more than winning battles, Iono sometimes regrets going too far for content, as seen in her conversation with Clavell at the League Club, though she brightened up when Clavell complimented the nickname "Mr. Walksabout" that she gave him on her stream.[21] Interestingly, Iono notices that her viewer count spikes whenever she loses a battle, though she doesn't understand why.[22]

Iono is highly animated in her movements. She often shakes with clenched teeth in awkward or tense situations and, in battle, she continuously steps up and down in place. Her oversized jacket frequently conceals her hands, so actions like waving or holding a Poké Ball are done with her coat's arms. The dainty throwing style she uses in battle is the same as the one available to the player at the League Club and is shared with Poppy.

Challenging the Levincia Gym

Levincia Gym Leader: Iono

(AKA the Supercharged Streamer)

"This Electric-type user and hit streamer is adored by the young. Her viewers’ reactions are more important to her than victory in battle, and her Gym Test is one-of-a-kind. Be ready for anything!"

Appearance

Iono's reference sheet

Iono is a small, thin woman with long arms and legs. Her age is unclear, though she has been a streamer for several years. She has distinctive teal and pink hair that reaches below her knees, styled in two wide ponytails with "bulbs" at the ends and a short pink bang shaped like a ribbon.[23] Her contact lenses feature a gradient of colors, and her unique eyelashes have purple, triangular segments. Her natural hair color might be black, suggested by her short, thin eyebrows. Iono's teeth are jagged and shark-like, which might be a nod to the design of popular virtual YouTuber characters in the real world.

Clothing and accessories

Iono's outfit consists of an oversized yellow and black jacket with her logo on the front and stylized Poké Balls on the sleeve straps. Beneath the jacket, she wears a silver bodysuit with a screw-like detail at the neck and a black textured outfit underneath, extending to her thighs. Her shoes, matching the bodysuit in color, have high heels and a yellow outsole, with a protruding "screw". All her clothing items feature a hexagonal pattern. She also sports a black strap on her left thigh with gray text.

Two "fancy shmancy"[8] Magnemite-shaped hair clips animate and mimic Iono's emotions. These clips can express various reactions and have been shown to act independently, including causing a "bzzt-bzzt-smash rampage" in Chargestone Cavern.[16] Strangely, Iono never uses any member of the Magnemite line on her team, although she offers to trade a Magnemite to the player in The Indigo Disk.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Main article: Iono (anime)

Iono is an energetic and eccentric streamer, just like her game counterpart. She is close friends with Dot, often helping her and encouraging her throughout Pokémon Horizons: The Series. Iono first appeared in Someone We Can't See! Whosawhatsit?, where she assisted Dot in finding Liko by turning the search into a game. She continues to support Dot during her journey, offering guidance both as a friend and a collaborator.

Iono helps boost Dot's confidence in battles, like when she proposes that Dot fight as Nidothing and later faces her in a battle during Tera Training. Although Iono wins, she praises Dot's growth as a Trainer. The two also partner in the Elite Four Tag Battle, where Iono takes the lead during Dot's moments of hesitation, ultimately winning the battle together. Iono frequently interacts with Dot through video calls and livestreams, maintaining a playful and supportive relationship.

Overall, Iono is a mischievous, tech-savvy influencer who encourages her friend while also using her platform to create engaging content. Her kindness and playfulness shine through as she fosters Dot's development both in and out of battle.

Iono's initial teaser image

Iono was initially revealed to the public on October 12th, 2022, in a video uploaded to all official Pokémon YouTube channels titled Guess Iono’s Partner Pokémon![24] with the intent to tease the reveal of her partner Pokémon, Bellibolt, just two days later in Meet Bellibolt.[25] An announcement of her reveal was made just one day prior, with the Japanese account including a silhouetted tease of her design.[26] In the videos, she dances around animatedly, spouts her usual catchphrases, and baits the audience to catch the full reveal, letting slip that she chose to do so to rack up the on her follow-up.

Her voice in these reveals went uncredited for a whole year until the release of Breathe In, which, in re-using audio from this animation for a short cameo featuring Iono, confirms her voice actress here was Fairouz Ai.[27]

Let's Play the Pokémon Card Game!

Monjana in Let's Play the Pokémon Card Game!

Monjana (Japanese: もんじゃな Monjana), a cross-canon counterpart of Iono, appeared in the Scarlet & Violet arc of Let's Play the Pokémon Card Game!, where she battles against the protagonists. Her deck is themed around Electric-type Pokémon, such as Pikachu and Pawmi, and often mentions how lucky she is at the game.[28] Monjana's personality appears to be similar to that of Iono's in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as she maintains a thoroughly smug attitude throughout both of her battles, though her design is radically different. The Magnemite-shaped hairclips have been replaced with Master Balls, and her hair now curves below her face in the shape of lightning bolts. Additionally, she now has an actual ribbon in her hair, as opposed to having her hair styled like a ribbon above her fringe.

Monjana's Bellibolt jacket after losing

Her design is far simpler in this manga; her sharp teeth have been removed in favor of a single fang, with further simplifications made to her boots and singular thigh high, the latter of which was removed. Her jacket now resembles a Bellibolt in spite of it not making an appearance in Monjana's deck during the chapter she is in, but its expression on the jacket shifts depending on Monjana's own personality for comedic effect.

Pokémon Adventures

Iono in Pokémon Adventures

Iono debuted in PASV11. She was first seen in Levincia, where she received a challenge from Nemona and Scarlet. Once both challengers successfully completed their Gym Tests, Iono faced Scarlet in a Gym battle first. Scarlet easily took down Iono's first two Pokémon and sent out her Pikachu, which she taught the move Dig as a countermeasure for when Iono Terastallized her final Pokémon. Iono boasted that her Mismagius was invincible, as it possessed the Levitate Ability, making Ground-type moves useless against it.

Scarlet eventually emerged victorious while managing to prevent Iono from using Terastallization. but when Nemona questioned her strategic decisions during the match. Scarlet revealed it was intentional. Just before they battled, Iono requested that Scarlet help create a battle that would get lots of views. As compensation, Scarlet asked to have an all-you-can-eat buffet at every food stall in Levincia to make up for Iono having no information on the treasures of ruin. Afterward, Iono called Nemona over to have their Gym battle.

Bellibolt is Iono's second known Pokémon. It was first used to battle Scarlet's Armarouge. It tried attacking with a super effective Water Gun; Armarouge easily dodged with Substitute before taking Bellibolt out with Mystical Fire.

Bellibolt's only known move is Water Gun.

Mismagius Electric Tera Type

Debut PASV12

Mismagius is Iono's third known Pokémon. It was first used to battle Scarlet's Pikachu. Despite Scarlet teaching her Pikachu a Ground move in advance to counter Iono's Electric types, Iono boasted that her Mismagius's Levitate Ability and Tera type made it invincible. It managed to take down Scarlet's Armarouge and Floragato before losing to her Pikachu.

Mismagius's known moves are Phantom Force and Confuse Ray, and its Ability is Levitate*.

Trivia

  • Iono's Japanese Gym Leader title is エレキトリカル★ストリーマー.[47]
  • Iono renames her challenge "Where in Levincia Is Mr. Walksabout?", possibly referencing the edutainment series Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?.
  • Iono, Nemona, and Clavell are the only characters in the League Club Room that don't trade to the player a Pokémon or a pre-Evolution of a Pokemon that they are seen using in battle, that being Magnemite, Paldean Tauros, and Pawmo, respectively.
    • The Pokémon that Iono trades, however, is a reference to her hairclips.
