History

Pre-series

Lucius, Rystal, Pagogo, and the Black Rayquaza traveling together

100 years prior to the events of the series, Lucius discovered the existences of a mysterious Pokémon paradise named Laqua in fairytales, with that motivation, Lucius decided to go on a journey to find it alongside his Black Rayquaza. As theorized by Briar and Friede in Encounters at the Crystal Pool, Lucius at some point gained a copy of the Scarlet Book, which led him to learn about Terapagos. One day, Lucius noticed a woman named Rystal carrying a Pokémon being chased by thieves, as he arrived in time to save them. Seeing that Rystal had a Terapagos that she nicknamed Pagogo, Lucius became excited to meet it in person. Lucius was then joined by Rystal as she expressed her desire to travel with him, which he accepted. During their journey, Lucius and Rystal met all kinds of Pokémon, five of them even joined the duo on their mission to find Laqua. Alongside Rayquaza, they became known as the Six Heroes. One of them was a Kleavor in Hisui, Lucius saved it from a group of angry villagers and during the encounter, his Lapras was injured by the Kleavor. Despite this, Kleavor joined Lucius, who decided to set off on the journey again alongside Rystal. At some point, Lucius also asked Arboliva to look for something currently unknown.

Lucius, Gibeon, and Rystal, the original Explorers

While looking for leads on Laqua, Rystal and Lucius meet a man named Gibeon, as he joined them on their journey thanks to their shared interest in Laqua. Later, they co-founded the group known as the Explorers. However, little did Lucius know, Rystal became pregnant with their child. Together, they traveled through various regions until they found Laqua. The three admird the beautiful paradise and they saw various Legendary Pokémon leaving peacefully there. Wondering how such a prosperous environment was created, they explored further in and discovered some pink crystals known as Laquium, which stimulated the growth of the plants around it, so much actually that it started devastating the land. Lucius and Rystal decided to leave Laqua, worried that the crystal's power could negatively influence them. However, Gibeon disagreed and started using his Zygarde to dig the crystals out, fascinated by their powers, but the crystals started to expand and spread pink mist around, causing many wild Pokémon to go feral, and the plant life to grow out of control and wither simultaneously. Fearing they might bring the destruction of the world, Lucius called to his Six Heroes to stop it and even Gibeon's Zygarde tried to help, only to have 40% of its Cells blown away, reducing it to a 10% Forme Zygarde. Gibeon fell into a crack created by the crystals, but Lucius and Rystal refused to give up: Pagogo then changed into its Stellar Form and, alongside the Six Heroes, stopped the crystals's expansion with a barrier, but Lucius remained trapped and was eventually encased into the Laquium, which kept him alive, but dormant from then on. Fortunately, Rystal was able to escape and raise their daughter Layla on her own, but Lucius would never get to meet her.

Many years later, Layla's own daughter Diana found a briefcase in her home's attic as a young girl, inside it she found the dormant Pagogo and Lucius's old diary. The text in the diary motivated her to travel on her own journey to find out if these stories were real, unaware that the writer was her grandfather. At some point in her journey, Diana also somehow found Lucius's empty belt.

As revealed during a flashback in Guided by the Black Rayquaza!, Lucius was awakened by the voice of Gibeon's Zygarde, who told him that it had been observing Laqua and the rest of the world for 100 years, agreeing with him that the Laquium was dangerous as it kept expanding over Laqua. Over the course of the series, Zygarde regularly told Lucius what was happening outside, including about the reformed Explorers and the Rising Volt Tacklers seeking the Six Heroes.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Lucius and the Six Heroes as depicted in Alex's book

The still unnamed Ancient Adventurer was first mentioned by Roy when describing his feats to Liko in The Treasure After the Storm!. Lucius briefly appeared in a fantasy in The Ancient Poké Ball when Roy told his grandfather about his dreams.

A real vision of Lucius was first shown in The Future I Choose, just after the Rising Volt Tacklers helped restore a forest that had been destroyed by a wildfire, the Pokémon in Liko's pendant came to life. With Arboliva's assistance, the Pokémon showed Liko and Roy a vision of the past where Lucius asked Arboliva to look for something. Later, Liko and Roy read a book by Liko's father that told the history of Lucius's adventures, based on stories told by Liko's grandmother Diana.

Lucius's diary and belt

Lucius appeared again in a vision for Liko, Roy, and Friede in Fiery Galarian Moltres. This time, the mysterious adventurer was seen talking to Moltres about achieving Laqua. In the next episode, Diana revealed that she found a diary in her childhood with memories of Lucius's adventures. She also revealed that Laqua is the name of the paradise that Lucius was looking for and that at some point Terapagos was with Lucius on this journey.

In Rivals in the Dark of Night!, Liko read Lucius' memories where he left a message inspiring people to live in harmony with Pokémon while together seeking a better future. Diana also revealed the identity of Lucius' remaining Pokémon that were lost around the world; Lapras, Kleavor, and Entei. In Terapagos's Adventure, Diana showed Liko a photograph of Lucius. She also took advantage and gave her Lucius' belt where he carried his former companions' Poké Ball. Lucius appeared in a fantasy in The Terapagos I Don't Know alongside Terapagos while Raifort told Liko and her friends the story of Laqua.

In Encounters at the Crystal Pool, Liko showed Briar the work written by Lucius in his diary, which led the group to go to the shore of the Crystal Pool with Terapagos to try to find the spirit of the Legendary Trainer, but they did not have any answers at that time, which made them decide to meet again when Briar had more answers.

In The Three Explorers, Lucius appeared in a fantasy. After reuniting with Diana, the Rising Volt Tacklers discovered some details about Lucius's life and his relationship with the Explorers. Later, Liko and Diana discovered that they had blood ties to the legendary adventurer.

Once Liko and the Rising Volt Tacklers managed to gather the Six Heroes in Beyond the Shining Rainbow, Lucius appeared in a final vision to the group alongside Rystal and Gibeon, about to enter Laqua.

Lucius freed in the present day and reuniting with Pagogo after 100 years

In The Truth Revealed!, Hamber recounted Gibeon's vision for the events with Lucius to Amethio, thus making Amethio believe that in reality Lucius betrayed Gibeon's trust. Hamber also revealed to Amethio that Liko is a descendant of Lucius and how the current events may be a work of destiny that has waited about a hundred years to happen.

Lucius and Gibeon fading away due to the destruction of Laquium

In Guided by the Black Rayquaza!, after Gibeon began using Zygarde's power and the Six Heroes and Pagogo joined forces, Lucius "awakened" in the present day. Explaining to Liko and the other Rising Volt Tacklers that he had been aware of everything that had happened over the past hundred years with Zygarde's help, Lucius confronted Gibeon, warning him of how damaging the use of Laquium would be to the world. Trying to remember the old days, Gibeon warned that it was too late and with the help of Spinel they began mining the Laquium that was in Laqua. Although Zygarde's perspective on the Laquium still differed from Gibeon's, it decided to team up with its Trainer in order to test Amethio, Liko, Roy, and Dot.

In Where the Adventure Leads, after the Laquium was purified by Pagogo and the Six Heroes, Lucius and Gibeon began to fade away, due to the Laquium keeping them alive being gone. Lucius released the Six Heroes from their Ancient Poké Balls, before fading away peacefully with Gibeon, saying that Rystal was waiting for them. Later in the episode, due to the destruction caused by the Six Heroes, Liko tripped and dropped Lucius's belt, Ancient Poké Balls, and diary into a fissure, but Friede reassured them that his story will live as long as they remember it.

Character

Although much of Lucius is based on legend and myth, his deeds have resonated for years. This meant that the stories of Lucius's deeds inspired several Trainers across the last century, such as Roy and Diana. He was also shown to be really adventurous, travelling to many different regions with the goal of reaching the Laqua paradise. During the flashbacks in which he was seen, it was shown that Lucius had a deep connection with all of his Pokémon. During a flashback shown in The Pillar of Fire, Lucius was shown to have a more relaxed and cheerful side as he tried to get closer to his Pokémon.

Lucius remaining in Laqua after the Laquium is sealed by Pagogo and the Six Heroes

As revealed in The Wonders of the World!, Lucius was a founding member of the Explorers, alongside his allies Rystal and Gibeon. During the flashback in Kleavor the Solitary Warrior, Lucius was shown to be compassionate, protecting and freeing a Kleavor from angered villagers who had just captured it for terrorizing their village. Even when the Kleavor tried attacking him after being freed, scarring his Lapras in the process, Lucius still offered it a chance to join them in their journey to Laqua. Lucius was shown to be selfless and self-sacrificing, as he chose to stay behind on Laqua to keep the Laquium crystals in check, regardless of his own safety.

Even after 100 years trapped within Laquium, Lucius did not change one bit, staying positive and warmly welcoming the Rising Volt Tacklers to Laqua and specially congratulating his descendant Liko and his biggest fan Roy for their progress. Lucius was a wise person who wished to protect the world from threats like Laquium, which Lucius believed to have a power that goes against the natural order of the world and that'll only lead to destruction. With the help of Pagogo and the Six Heroes, he planned to rid the world of it once and for all, even if it meant him fading away, believing the world must be left to the next generation.

Lucius had a complicated relationship with Gibeon, who believed Lucius and Rystal had betrayed him 100 years ago. Lucius never intended to do that, however, wishing they could've talked more in the past, even apologizing to Gibeon for their fight, but Gibeon refused to accept it, claiming it was too late now. After Zygarde left Gibeon, Lucius explained that he had only lost because of the bonds between Liko and her Meowscarada, which Gibeon, as a scientist, couldn't understand the logic behind, but Lucius asked him if Zygarde only sided with him to show what the bonds between people and Pokémon can really do, which seemed to finally make Gibeon reflect. With this, Lucius and Gibeon finally reconciled and peacefully faded away to see Rystal once again.

Pokémon

Lucius and his Pokémon, the Six Heroes

100 years ago, Lucius traveled alongside six Pokémon that he encountered through the various regions he traveled to during his journey. Collectively, they were known as the Six Heroes, and each of them had a specific purpose. After an explosion created by the Laquium crystals in Laqua, Lucius's Poké Balls were scattered around the world while he was kept trapped within the paradise. When Lucius passed away in Where the Adventure Leads, his Pokémon were released from their Poké Balls.

Lucius kept all his Pokémon in Ancient Poké Balls.
