Coral (Japanese: サンゴ Sango^[2]) is an admin of the Explorers and a major recurring antagonist in Pokémon Horizons: The Series. In the Mega Voltage arc, she and Sidian promote new products of Exceed.

History

Pre-series

Coral was one of the members recruited by Hamber to follow Gibeon's mission, being trained by him personally along with the other members of the team barring Spinel. Among the four trained by Hamber, she was the second to be recruited and trained after Amethio.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Coral first appeared as a hologram in The Ancient Poké Ball, alongside the other Explorers's admins. The first time she spoke and was seen clearly was in Quaxly, We Can Do It, taunting Spinel about his last failure.

She made her physical debut in Reunion at the Ancient Castle!. At Hamber's request, Coral and Sidian accompanied him to the Galar region. In the next episode, after tracking down Amethio's location, the group arrived at the old castle where Diana was living at. Despite Hamber ordering them to stay on standby while he secured their target, Coral and Sidian invaded the location and cornered Liko and Roy, only to be stopped by the sudden arrival of Captain Pikachu. Once Cap took out Sidian's Garganacl, Coral snapped and recklessly ordered her Glalie to use Self-Destruct, allowing the Rising Volt Tacklers to escape and leaving the old castle in ruins.

In As Long as I'm with My Friends, Coral and the other admins joined in a meeting to discuss the Explorers' next objective. Eventually, they decided to go after the Black Rayquaza.

In A Challenge from the Explorers, Coral and Sidian arrived in a seaside town in Paldea. Coral had led him there under the guise of finding something important, which was actually some rare Wiglett sweet buns. However, upon finding out they had sold out and that Liko and Roy had managed to get a box without even lining up, she left them a challenge letter on the back of Roy's Fuecoco. While Coral faced Roy, Sidian stepped in to take Liko on. Despite the rough start, the young Rising Volt Tacklers refused to give up and eventually broke through their foes' strategies. Impressed, the two Explorers decided to stop holding back, but were forced to withdraw after Sidian received a call to take part in mission involving the Black Rayquaza.

In The Plan to Capture Rayquaza, Coral, Sidian, and Chalce summoned the Black Rayquaza near Levincia by using a machine that generated an energy similar to that Terapagos emitted previously and had their Pokémon battle against the Sky High Pokémon. They started strong, unleashing powerful super effective moves, but lost control over Rayquaza once Dot managed to shut down the machine. Once again, Coral let her temper overcome her better judgment and commanded Glalie to use Self-Destruct, which collided with Rayquaza's Dragon Pulse. The resulting explosion was powerful enough to blast the Legendary Pokémon directly into the hull of the Brave Olivine.

In From So Far Away, the Explorers were forced to retreat after realizing their attacks failed to any lasting damage to Rayquaza. Later, Coral and the other admins were gathered to have a meeting with Gibeon. The admins were ordered to allow the Rising Volt Tacklers to keep gathering the Six Heroes and restore Terapagos's power, as this would benefit the Explorers' plans as well. Gibeon also told them to monitor Liko and Terapagos.

In Welcome to Naranja Academy!, Coral, along with Sidian, enrolled in Naranja Academy as part of the Tera Training. Sidian introduced Coral to Clavell under the name Cornbread (Japanese: サンドイッチ Sandwich), much to her amusement.

In Put Your Heart Into It!, Coral was sent to Cortondo as part of course training. Having heard of Patisserie Soapberry's pastries, Coral was excited to try some. Much to her disdain, upon arriving, she discovered that the shop was out of stock for the day and angrily demanded some. Katy arrived and when she explained to her and Liko that she only had time for one of them, Coral impulsively demanded a match with Liko. Katy then pointed out that the students are not allowed to use Terastallization against each other and suggested a bake-off. In the ensuing bake-off, Coral, being impatient and not knowing how to bake, made a mess and lost the competition. In anger, she had Glalie use Blizzard in the kitchen. This caused Katy to glare and address her in a tone intimidating enough for Coral to stop and she begrudingly left.

In Trending Terastallization! Dance, Dance, Quaxly!, Coral and Sidian were spying on Liko and Roy when they were approached by Clavell, so he thought the two were only interested in Liko and her group's battles. Clavell suggested them to go together to watch the battle at the Gym. Soon after, Coral decided to leave Clavell talking alone and went behind a food stall.

Prior to Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four, Coral managed to succeed in a new exam, this time against Kofu. When the Tera Training students returned, Coral was tasked with battling Larry alongside Kofu. During the battle, Coral had Glalie use Self-Destruct, knocking all of the Pokémon out. Larry was declared the winner of the match, much to her shock, claiming that a win was a win. After being reprimanded, she angrily left the arena.

In The Terapagos I Don't Know, Coral and Sidian were seen with the other students during Clavell's speech that began the second part of the Training. Despite this, her Gym challenge was not revealed.

In The Approaching Shadow!, Coral and Sidian surrounded Roy and Dot on Spinel's orders, abandoning their student disguises. In the next episode, Coral and Sidian battled against Roy and Dot to stall them, but before Coral's Glalie could finish off their opponents, they were interrupted by Grusha's arrival, so Chalce commanded the two admins to retreat. At their base the Explorers Admins gathered to ask Amethio if he had betrayed the Explorers by helping out Liko in escaping from a cave after seeing the footage recorded by Spinel's Beheeyem and why he did not catch Terapagos when he had the chance. Before Amethio could give a proper explanation, Gibeon arrived and expelled his grandson from the Explorers for helping their enemies.

In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, while Chalce hacked Naranja Academy's systems to steal data on Terapagos, Coral and Sidian were ordered to prevent anyone from interfering with the mission. Coral later encountered Roy, who had been made aware of the sabotage and went to confront the Explorers. After being lured outside of the academy's hallways, Coral faced Roy in a battle, only to end up defeated. Sidian then arrived and forced Coral to retreat with him, much to her anger. In the following episode, dejected over her defeat, Coral was seen enjoying a sandwich with her Glalie alongside Sidian, who had a rice ball.

In Over the Top!, Hamber ordered Coral and Sidian to follow the Rising Volt Tacklers to Area Zero. In the next episode, Coral was observing the Rising Volt Tacklers, but decided to go exploring Area Zero on her own. While exploring, Coral met a Scream Tail but believed it was a Jigglypuff and called it Screamypuff (Japanese: オニプリン Onipurin). However, when a Great Tusk appeared, Coral and her Glalie teamed up with Screamypuff to defeat it. After defeating Great Tusk, Coral tried to silence Screamypuff's relentless screaming by throwing something at it, but accidentally threw a Poké Ball and caught it. Following this, she reunited with Sidian, and in the following episode, Coral and Sidian witnessed the Rising Volt tacklers' battle against Lucius's Gouging Fire and Rayquaza from a distance. At the end of the battle, they departed from Area Zero to report their findings to their fellow Explorers.

In The Truth Revealed!, Coral and Sidian attended a meeting with Gibeon where they reported the events in the Area Zero. After this, Gibeon instructed them to prepare for the battle that will follow in Laqua.

In The Pokémon Paradise of Laqua!, after Pagogo removed the barrier keeping Laqua sealed, Liko, Roy, and Dot were greeted by Coral, Sidian, and Chalce. In the following episode, the Explorers admitted they were aware of Laqua's location from the beginning and just waited for the Rising Volt Tacklers to take down the barrier for them. Having achieved their goal, the Explorers decided to get rid of the Rising Volt Tacklers by battling them. Coral chose to battle Roy's Crocalor with Screamypuff, but despite its strength and Coral utilizing Terastallization, Screamypuff's lack of proper battle experience eventually led to its defeat. Refusing to give up, Coral sent out Glalie, but was interrupted when a large vortex of pink mist began filling the air.

In Guided by the Black Rayquaza!, the Explorers continued to prevent Liko's group from heading further into Laqua, only to be attacked by Onia and Zirc. This distraction allowed Liko, Roy, and Dot to run ahead and confront Gibeon. Later, Coral and her allies supported Gibeon by utilizing machines designed to stimulate the ground where the Laquium was buried, forcibly activating it and making it expand uncontrollably. Coral, Sidian, and Chalce used their Pokémon to block any incoming attacks that would damage the machines. In the following episode, Coral watched Gibeon battled the Rising Volt Tacklers and Amethio, only to eventually be defeated.

In Where the Adventure Leads, once the Laquium had been purified by Pagogo and the Six Heroes, Coral watched in shock as Gibeon's body faded away. Disappointed by his former leader's failure, Spinel announced that he would surpass Gibeon and that the Explorers would take control of Laqua. Coral and Sidian objected to Spinel's sudden ambitions, but were told by Chalce to just keep watching. Using a device he developed, Spinel infected five of the Six Heroes with Laquium. The infected heroes ran wild, causing Laqua to begin collapsing on itself.

One year later, in HZ095, Coral and Sidian appeared at the Exceed Test Center, taking part in a public demonstration of the Strong Sphere. Coral took the time to entertain the crowd before Sidian informed her of Liko and Roy's presence, shocking her. They both challenged Liko and Roy to a Double Battle, which Coral and Sidian won after using the Strong Sphere to empower their Pokémon with Laquium. After cruelly continuing to attack Liko and Roy's already-defeated Pokémon, they were stopped by Uruto, who denounced the Strong Sphere and told Coral to face him next. Coral impulsively commanded Glalie to Self-Destruct after Uruto's Sableye proved troublesome, though it dealt no damage to Darkness Pokémon and simply allowed the trio to escape. Afterwards, Coral and Sidian met with Chalce, who noted that as long as the Explorers have the public on their side, Liko's group couldn't do anything to stop them.

In HZ109, Coral and Sidian arrived at a city for a promotion and the two parted ways in order to look for some food once it concluded. Arriving at a dessert shop, Coral had her Pokémon wait in line, only to be recognized by the crowd and swarmed, but an Exceed representative took them away. The representative had them board a Flying Taxi and they were arriving to their next location when Dot's Tinkatuff knocked Corviknight out of the sky in order to acquire its feathers. The cabbie and his Corviknight fled after realizing who the aggressor was, leaving Coral and Sidian to fend for themselves. As they witnessed Tinkatuff forge a new hammer, Dot arrived, resulting in Coral battling her with Glalie. During the battle, Glalie interrupted Tinkatuff's forging, but Tinkatuff was able to forge her new hammer and evolved into Tinkaton, who quickly defeated Glalie and forced the two to run away.

Character

Coral appears to have a mostly cheery and playful personality, but likes to disrespectfully poke fun at her allies whenever they fail a mission. Along with Sidian, Coral is considered a troublemaker due to her lack of discipline and reckless behavior in comparison to her fellow admins, though she is far more troublesome than him. This is especially shown when she orders her Glalie to Self-Destruct numerous times throughout the series, often outright ignoring external factors and consequences, resulting in disaster. As seen in A Challenge from the Explorers, she is easily distracted, as she was shown focusing on her Rotom Phone during her battle with Roy. She also appears to place great importance on the value of collectable items, a behavior seen when she became angry over Liko opening a box of Wiglett sweet buns, ruining its pristine condition.

Coral is also quite childish and vain, occasionally referring to herself in the third-person and openly expressing how cute she is. In the Japanese version, she often uses the slang prefix オニ oni as an intensifier and as a pun on Onigohri, Glalie's Japanese name. She's also quite the loudmouth, openly talking about the Explorers' plans in front of others, even their enemies, as she talked about the organization's intention to summon the Black Rayquaza in front of Liko and Roy. She also prioritizes dealing with her grudges more than the organization's plans as she refused to leave the battle with Liko and Roy at first, being dragged away by force by Sidian and his Aerodactyl. Ultimately, Coral's temperamental nature and grudges have often caused consequences for herself, such as getting disqualified by Katy for recklessly destroying the cake and attacking Liko in Put Your Heart Into It!. Keeping in line with her hot-headed nature Coral is also very impatient, to the point of wanting the end battles quickly rather than stall opponents for time as seen in Liko and Amethio. As seen in Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger! Coral is shown to be a sore loser, as seen when she reacted with anger and frustration after losing to Roy and his Fuecoco in battle.

After the battle at Naranja Academy in Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!, Coral began to show a lighter side, reflecting on her time as a student at the institution and sharing her food with Glalie. Despite her hot-headed brashness, she genuinely cares for her Pokémon and is shown occasionally doting on them. In Where the Adventure Leads, Coral and Sidian were shown opposing Spinel's takeover of the Explorers, showing a sense of standards and drawing a line with Spinel's ruthless and unethical actions. Coral is shown to respect Chalce, as she and Sidian did not stop Spinel due to Chalce telling them to stand down. Ironically, Coral was willing to subject her Glalie to the effects of the Laquium without care for its pained condition and even had it brutalize defeated opponents a year later, ultimately demonstrating hypocrisy on her part by proving her actions antithetical to her own supposed morals.

Glalie is Coral's first known Pokémon as well as her main partner. It is usually seen outside of its Poké Ball. In addition to using it in battle, Coral uses Glalie as her transportation method. It is a devoted and loyal Pokémon, its stoicism acting as a foil to Corals hotheadedness. It readily acts as her mode of transportation and unflinchingly carries out her commands, even resorting to Self-Destruct as a potent offensive maneuver, understanding such sacrifices are essential for Coral's triumph. Glalie also displayed a hint of mockery towards Scream Tail's attempts to impress them against Great Tusk. Furthermore, its considerable size presents challenges when navigating doorways.

In Rivals in the Dark of Night!, it was sent to battle Liko and Roy alongside Sidian's Garganacl at the ancient castle. Once Captain Pikachu arrived to aid the young Rising Volt Tacklers, however, Coral recklessly commanded Glalie to use Self-Destruct, which abruptly ended the match.

In A Challenge from the Explorers, it was used to battle against Roy's Fuecoco, though the battle was cut short due to new developments on the Explorers's plan to summon the Black Rayquaza, whom Glalie faced off alongside Sidian's Garganacl and Chalce's Medicham in the next episode.

In Showdown! The Paldea Elite Four, Glalie was used by Coral in a Tag Battle alongside Kofu and his Wugtrio against Larry's Flamigo and Oricorio. However, Coral caused all the Pokémon to be knocked out, Glalie itself included, by ordering it to use Self-Destruct, thus resulting in her and Kofu's defeat.

In The Approaching Shadow!, Glalie was sent out alongside Sidian's Garganacl to confront Roy and Dot to stall them from rescuing Liko. In the next episode, Glalie and Garganacl teamed up yet again against Roy's Fuecoco and Dot's Quaxwell. The battle remained firmly on Coral and Sidian's side up until Grusha interfered to protect Roy and Dot from the Explorers duo.

In Infiltrating the System! Naranja Academy in Danger!, Glalie was used to battle against Roy's Fuecoco, but it was defeated by his Flamethrower. After being knocked out, Sidian forced Coral to retreat, so Glalie was recalled.

In Total-lie Awesome Pokémon in Area Zero?!, Glalie was used to battle against a Great Tusk alongside a wild Scream Tail. As it was trying to end the battle with a Self-Destruct, the Great Tusk pushed it closer to Coral and Scream Tail, sending them all flying away with the explosion.

In The Rising Volt Tacklers vs. The Explorers!, Glalie was used to continue battling Roy's Crocalor after Screamypuff's defeat, it was interrupted by Zirc and Onia's Pokemon in the next episode.

In HZ095, in the one year since the incident at Laqua, Glalie had since learned Sheer Cold and during an Exceed-sponsored event at Uirō City's Exceed's Test Center, it was used to battle Roy's Crocalor once again, this time being empowered by Laquium. After Meowscarada and Crocalor were defeated by Glalie and Garganacl, it was then interrupted by Uruto and his Sableye, who attacked Glalie with Shadow Sneak when it attempted to attack Liko and Roy's downed Pokémon. Angered by the interruption, Coral recklessly commanded Glalie to use Self-Destruct, resulting in its own defeat and allowing Uruto, Roy, and Liko to escape from the facility.

Glalie's known moves are Blizzard, Self-Destruct, Crunch, Ice Spinner, and Sheer Cold.

This Scream Tail nicknamed Screamypuff (Japanese: オニプリン Onipurin) is Coral's second known Pokémon. It is tempermental, brash, and prone to tantrums, similar to Coral herself, but also unwaveringly loyal, desperate to prove its worth to Coral and Glalie upon being awed by their bravery, and becoming upset when its efforts were undermined by Coral. Coral first encountered it whilst exploring Area Zero after stepping on its tail, causing it to lash out and scream. Not realizing it was a Paradox Pokémon, she mistook it for a Jigglypuff and decided to call it Screamypuff. After an ensuing argument between the two caused a run-in with a Great Tusk, Screamypuff teamed up with Coral's Glalie and was able to deal with it, despite the Face Pokémon's failed attempt at using Self-Destruct. However, during the battle, Screamypuff gradually bonded with Coral and Glalie. After the battle, Screamypuff threw another tantrum in response to Coral insulting its efforts in battle, causing Coral to throw a Poké Ball at it by accident in an attempt to make it stop screaming, resulting in Screamypuff joining her team.

In The Rising Volt Tacklers vs. The Explorers!, Screamypuff was sent out to battle against the younger Rising Volt Tacklers. It initially held the advantage, further Terastallizing into a pure Fairy type but eventually lost to Roy's Crocalor due to its inexperience with battling.

Screamypuff's known moves are Crunch, Boomburst, and Play Rough.
