Reason: Complete list of purchasable items and TMs from the Kecleon Shop in every Mystery Dungeon game

Artwork of Kecleon Shop from Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon

Kecleon Shops (Japanese: カクレオンのおみせ Kakureon Shop) are locations in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. They exist to assist players through their game by offering various food items, TMs, and other goods. Items can also be sold to Kecleon Shop for Poké.

They are found in various towns throughout the games and in dungeons.

In towns

Kecleon Shop in Lively Town

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team and its remake, the Kecleon Shop in Pokémon Square is run by two Kecleon brothers. The older, green Kecleon runs the Kecleon Shop (Japanese: カクレオンしょうてん Kakureon Store), which sells various items and foods. The younger, purple Kecleon runs Kecleon Wares (Japanese: カクレオンせんもんてん Kakureon Specialty Shop), which sells TMs, Wonder Orbs(MDRB only), and Keys(MDRB only). It is the closest building to the Team Base.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, the shop is once again run by the Kecleon Brothers and located near the center of Treasure Town and are collectively referred to as the Kecleon Market. The shop is where the main characters meet the Marill and Azurill brothers. Bidoof is sent to the Kecleon Shop to find out how many Oran Berries are on sale that day in the Special Episode Bidoof's Wish.

In the WiiWare games, only the older brother is present at the shop.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, only the older Kecleon is running the shop, which is located in Post Town.

In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the Kecleon Shop is once again only run by the older brother and is present in every town as well as Serene Village, which adds up to a total of six Kecleon Shops, excluding the ones in dungeons. The shop in Lively Town also sells Lapras Liner Passes, which allows players to travel to other continents with Lapras Travel Liner.

Reason: When do Kecleon Shops start appearing in dungeons in Super Mystery Dungeon?

A dungeon shop in Super Mystery Dungeon

The shop is made up of a number of carpeted tiles on the floor, which have various items on them. There will be a Kecleon standing on one of the tiles, functioning as a neutral Pokémon that is immune to most attacks and items. When the player steps on a carpeted tile, the music changes and the player is greeted by the Kecleon. The items sold range from Berries to rare TMs and Wonder Orbs. The items sold depend on the dungeon, with shops in later dungeons offering better items. To buy an item, the player must pick it up and talk to the Kecleon to pay for them. To sell items, the player simply places them on shop tiles and then talks to Kecleon to receive the money, or they can decline and retrieve the items. Items available in these shops are sometimes very rare and almost never available from the Kecleon Shop in the towns. Certain items, such as gummis, TMs, and gifts, cannot be used or thrown until they are purchased.

In Red and Blue Rescue Team, Kecleon Shops can be found in Mt. Blaze onwards; in Rescue Team DX, they appear from Mt. Steel onwards. In Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky they appear from Waterfall Cave onwards. In Gates to Infinity, they appear from Stompstump Peak onwards. Gates to Infinity also features a downloadable dungeon called Kecleon Bazaar where its shop appears frequently and sells mainly TMs and occasionally some flags and HMs.

Kecleon Shops are marked on the map with purple in Gates to Infinity and green in Super Mystery Dungeon rather than the standard color. A Kecleon merchant is represented on the map as a redRBTDS, yellowGtI, whiteSMD, or unique greenRTDX dot.

Theft

If the player collects merchandise (or throws it off) and leaves the carpeted area, Kecleon will warp to the player's side, demand payment and/or offer money for sold items. If the player refuses to pay or tries to pay with insufficient funds, the Kecleon will label the player a thief and attack the player. In Gates To Infinity onward, shops span an entire room and the player will be asked to pay before leaving the shop rather than after, ensuring they can return the items if they have insufficient funds; Kecleon will only pursue the player if they leave after denying payment.

The player can automatically be incriminated through methods that bypass the payment prompt. Using a Trawl Orb (prior to Gates to Infinity) will include Kecleon Shop merchandise among the floor's unclaimed items. Leaving the shop via other means has a similar effect, such as using a Warp Seed; using moves like Teleport or Memento; moving onto an impassable tile such as with a Mobile Orb; or leaving the shop afflicted with confusion or a Yawn-induced sleep. Beyond this, leaving on a tile that is opened by the player, such as with Absolute Mover, will incriminate the player without even displaying the thief message.

In Explorers of Time and Darkness onward, using an Escape Orb after collecting items from the shop but before paying will remove the items from the inventory. If an Invisify Orb or Vanish Seed is used, the shop music will not play when standing in the shop, and should the player take any items and leave the shop, the player will not be labeled a thief until the effect wears off, regardless of the player's and Kecleon's locations.

Kecleon can also be pushed away from its shop, though transactions cannot be completed if it is not nearby. In Gates to Infinity, a message will be displayed ("It looks like a shop.") and an absent Kecleon will attempt to wander back; some Wonder Orbs can also affect Kecleon, such as Switcher Orb, Blowback Orb, and Warp Orb Orb. Using a Deposit Orb will not work on Kecleon merchandise. In Super Mystery Dungeon, Kecleon cannot be pushed out of its shop.

Effects of theft

After the player steals from a Kecleon Shop, a number of changes will take effect immediately, and will not wear off until the player reaches the next floor.

  • The background music will change. In Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky, and Gates to Infinity, this is the same background music used for confronting an outlaw Pokémon. In Rescue Team DX, this is the same music as the mazes in the Makuhita Dojo.
  • Certain Wonder Orbs, such as Escape Orbs, will become unusable; attempting to use one will waste it. In Gates to Infinity, stat-boosting items such as Protein cannot be used, but will not be consumed.
  • The Team Leader cannot be changed. In Super Mystery Dungeon, a defeated leader will still give leadership to the next Pokémon on the team if they are not locked as leader due to story content.
  • Attempts to complete a rescue mission on the same floor will fail. Attempting to do so yields this message: "You're a thief! You're not recognized as a rescuer!" However, retrieving an item from an outlaw will allow the team to escape the dungeon in a perfectly normal fashion.
  • The Kecleon shop itself becomes no different than ordinary ground, aside from its appearance.
    • Items that remained unsold at the time of the theft become regular items and can be picked up by the player and passing wild Pokémon.
    • Placing items, stolen or otherwise, on a Kecleon shop tile will have no effect.
  • Empowerment Seeds become unusable.
    • An Empowerment Seed that was eaten before stealing will not lose its effect until the player is knocked out.
  • The Kecleon that ran the market will turn hostile and begin attacking the player. It is an extremely powerful foe, as it is level 90 in Red and Blue Rescue Team, and has abnormally high stats in later games. Kecleon are also constantly at double travel speed when the player is branded a thief.
    • Additional Kecleon will rapidly spawn and join the original Kecleon. Defeating them is the only possible method of recruiting a Kecleon in certain games.
      • In Red and Blue Rescue Team, the leader must be level 90-100 and holding a Friend Bow to have a 0.1% chance of recruiting Kecleon.
      • In Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky if the leader is level 99-100, is holding a Golden Mask, and has the Fast Friends IQ skill, the chance of recruitment is approximately 0.1%[1].
      • In Gates to Infinity, Kecleon is not able to be recruited. Despite being unevolved, there is no Kecleon Gift available and neither Premier Gifts nor Normal Gifts will work on it.
      • In Super Mystery Dungeon, Kecleon is recruited at level 1 after forming 750 connections.
    • In Gates to Infinity onward, at least three Kecleon will appear by the stairs, and sometimes one will land on the stairs.
    • All other enemies that live in the dungeon stop appearing on the current floor. Starting in Gates to Infinity, any remaining enemies on the floor will vanish. In Super Mystery Dungeon, Warp Seeds will appear at the locations of vanished dungeon enemies.
    • If the player is knocked out by a Kecleon, all items in the bag that aren't lost will be turned into Plain Seeds, and a rescue attempt won't be possible. In Gates to Infinity onward, all items are lost outright.
    • In Gates to Infinity, Kecleon will be able to attack immediately upon being stolen from.

Glitches

Aggressive Kecleon glitch

Main article: List_of_glitches_in_the_Pokémon_Mystery_Dungeon_series#Aggressive Kecleon glitch

If a team member damages a neutral Kecleon, it will become hostile to the player. Uniquely, the player will not be formally accused of stealing (and thus the Kecleon will not gain a speed boost, no additional Kecleon will appear, and the music will not change) until the player exits the shop, even if Kecleon is defeated; however, Kecleon becoming hostile also prevents the player from being able to attempt any transactions. Similar to Absolute Mover, no thief message will be displayed as well. Neutral Kecleon can be damaged by explosions (such as Selfdestruct, Explosion, Aftermath, or an explosion trap), a consumed Blast Seed, another enemy holding a Pass Scarf, or an enemy flung such as by a Blowback Orb. Although explosions will destroy any nearby Kecleon shop merchandise, Kecleon will not react negatively to this unless also damaged by the explosion.

In Explorers of Sky onward, the player will not be considered a thief unless they take an item after Kecleon is defeated. In Gates to Infinity, Pass Scarfs ignore Kecleon and flung enemies and explosions do not cause Kecleon to become hostile, though Blast Seeds function the same. Moves like Earthquake and Pain Split can also target Kecleon but will not trigger it. In Super Mystery Dungeon, Blast Seeds also do not trigger it.

Dungeon shop glitch

Main article: List_of_glitches_in_the_Pokémon_Mystery_Dungeon_series#Dungeon shop glitch

In Red and Blue Rescue Team, an unlimited amount of Poké can be obtained from a dungeon shop by quicksaving the game after putting an item on the ground but before talking to the Kecleon.

False thief glitch

Main article: List_of_glitches_in_the_Pokémon_Mystery_Dungeon_series#False thief oversight

In Explorers of Time and Darkness, if a wild Pokémon is knocked out on a Kecleon shop and drops an item, the item can be picked up like usual, but this will be considered stealing. Even speaking to Kecleon before leaving the shop won't do anything, as the item wasn't set as a Kecleon shop item.

Kecleon team member glitch

Main article: List_of_glitches_in_the_Pokémon_Mystery_Dungeon_series#Kecleon team member glitch

In Red and Blue Rescue Team, as well as Explorers of Time and Darkness, the Kecleon in a dungeon shop can be made to follow the team around and behave as a team member, but will not follow the team onto the next floor. In contrast to the Aggressive Kecleon glitch, this occurs if a wild Pokémon damages the Kecleon, such with an explosion or having one of its attacks diverted to Kecleon by the player holding a Pass Scarf.

In Explorers of Sky, enemy attacks cannot be passed to Kecleon and all explosion damage causes it to become hostile to the player, though an enemy using a flinging move on the player like Roar, Fling, or Whirlwind still works.

The Kecleon Shop in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!

The Kecleon Shop and the Kecleon Brothers first appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!. After a briefing for a mission at Whiscash Pond, the newly formed Team Go-Getters went to the Kecleon Shop to buy items for their mission. The Kecleon Brothers informed them that they were closed to everyone, however, as Team Meanies had recently visited them and bought everything they had.

The Kecleon Shop in Treasure Town appeared in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness and is called The Kecleon Brothers Shop and Ware. Team Poképals and Sunflora visited the shop to buy a Joy Ribbon, a Defense Scarf, and a Power Band. Kecleon asks which mission they were doing that day while Team Razor Wind overheard them and decided to do their mission for them, believing them to be too inexperienced to succeed. During their visit, Piplup realized that he had had a vision of this visit during the previous night.
