Zone (Masters)

Activating a Steel Zone

Zone (Japanese: ゾーン Zone) is a type of field effect in Pokémon Masters EX that affects all Pokémon on the field. Only one type of zone may be present at a time, with any new zone put in place overwriting the previous zone. Zones can run concurrently alongside weather and terrain.

At normal game speed, zones generally last for 45 seconds. This excludes time that sync pairs spend performing sync moves or max moves, but this includes time spent on everything else (e.g., moves' animation times, stats getting raised or lowered, taking damage from hail or a sandstorm, skills activating, or status conditions being applied or taking effect). At faster speeds, zones last shorter to accommodate for quicker gameplay. However, the duration of a zone can be extended if the same type of zone is summoned again or if a Pokémon on the field has a certain skill that extends the duration of the zone.

There are thirteen types of zones, one for each type whose moves are not powered up by a weather or terrain effect. In order of release, the zones are Ghost Zone, Dragon Zone, Steel Zone, Dark Zone, Flying Zone, Bug Zone, Ground Zone, Fighting Zone, Fairy Zone, Poison Zone, Rock Zone, Ice Zone, and Normal Zone. Each zone powers up attacks of the corresponding type by 50% (e.g., Ghost Zone powers up Ghost-type moves). In addition, more powerful versions of zones exist called EX zones, powering up attacks of the corresponding type by 200%.

Creating zones

Zones may be applied through item moves, Trainer moves, buddy moves, and skills. Some Field sync pairs can set a zone using their sync move after being raised to 6★ EX (including those with the Field EX role).

By skill

If multiple sync pairs enter a battle simultaneously with a zone-setting skill that activates upon entry, the opposing team's skills will be activated before the player's team's skills, making the player's zone override the opponent's. In addition, zone-setting skills on the player's team will be activated in tactics order, meaning the zone set by the last pair in tactics order will override those of the others.

Modifying zones

Under normal circumstances, zones last for 45–50 seconds of gameplay. If a new zone is summoned, it will override the current zone, resetting the timer even if the new zone is the same as the current zone. However, the results are slightly different when the current zone is an EX zone:

  • If the zone being summoned is the non-EX version of the EX zone (e.g. summoning Fairy Zone while EX Fairy Zone is active), the duration of the EX zone is extended by 30 seconds.
  • If the zone being summoned is a different type of non-EX zone (e.g. summoning Ghost Zone while EX Fairy Zone is active), the summoning will fail and the zone remains unchanged.
  • If the zone being summoned is the same type of EX zone, the zone with the longer duration will be given priority.

Certain passive skills extend the duration of zones. When a sync pair with one of these skills is on the field, as soon as the zone is summoned, its duration will be extended by a fixed amount of time. These skills also extend the duration of the corresponding EX zone when it is summoned (but not when it is extended by summoning a non-EX zone).
