Will-O-Wisp (Japanese: おにび Will-o'-the-Wisp) is a non-damaging Fire-type move introduced in Generation III.

It is:

• TM61 from Generation IV to Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
• TM11 in Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!.
• TM38 in Pokémon Sword and Shield.
• TM107 in Generation IX.

Effect

Generation III

Will-O-Wisp inflicts a burn on the target. It has no effect on Fire-type Pokémon.

Will-O-Wisp can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point if Sunny Day was used in the previous turn.

It has an accuracy of 75%.

Generations IV and V

Will-O-Wisp activates Flash Fire.

Generation VI onwards

Will-O-Wisp's accuracy changed from 75% to 85%.

Will-O-Wisp can also be used as part of a Contest Spectacular combination, causing Hex to give an extra three appeal points if used in the next turn.

If powered up by a Firium Z, the user's Attack stat rises one stage.

In the Nintendo 3DS version's Smash Run mode, Chandelure appears as an enemy who can use Will-O-Wisp, which consists of three weak purple fireballs that home in on the player.

Pokkén Tournament

Chandelure also uses Will-O-Wisp in Pokkén. Chandelure sends weak purple flames that either fly forward or remain in place if charged. The flames cannot be nullified by other projectiles, and upon contact, the opponent's Attack is lowered, similar to a burn.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Will-O-Wisp is Gengar's and Trevenant's first move.

Gengar starts with the move as Gastly. The user shoots three flames in a cone, damaging and burning enemies hit. Upon reaching level 7 as Haunter, it is replaced by either Shadow Ball or Sludge Bomb.

Trevenant starts with the move as Phantump. The user shoots sinister flames in the designated direction, dealing damage to enemies hit and leaving them burned for a short time. This burn reduces enemy Attack and Sp. Attack by 5% for 3s. The first wisp to hit a target deals full damage, and subsequent flame hits deal 50% damage. Upon evolving at level 5, it is replaced by either Wood Hammer or Curse.

Description

• This move is named after the will-o'-the-wisp, a ghost light seen over wetlands.
• In all handheld games starting from Generation IV and in Pokémon Battle Revolution, the animation shows the flames being purple, although the description says they are bluish-white.
• Will-O-Wisp is one of a few moves with its accuracy being different between the core series (up to 85%) and Pokémon Masters EX (90%).
• Even though Will-O-Wisp is a status move, its depiction in the animated series prior to Pokémon Journeys: The Series was similar to that of a damage-dealing move, even to the point of being recognized in Gathering the Gang of Four! as an equal to a Charizard's Flamethrower in terms of power.
  • Furthermore, the first time Will-O-Wisp was seen inflicting a burn on its target was in Friends, Rivals, Lend Me Your Spirit!, almost 20 years after its debut in the core series games.
• In the dub versions of Jirachi: Wish Maker, when Butler calls for his Dusclops to use this attack, he calls it "Capitata" rather than "Will-O-Wisp". In the Japanese version, Butler says "Onibi", which is Will-O-Wisp's Japanese name. It is unknown how the name "Capitata" got into the script or final product.
• In the Latin American dub of Gathering the Gang of Four!, Will-O-Wisp was referred to as Fogonazo, which is the European Spanish name for Seed Flare.
