Light Screen (Japanese: ひかりのかべ Light Wall) is a non-damaging Psychic-type move introduced in Generation I.

It is:

It is the special counterpart to Reflect.

Effect

Generation I

Light Screen doubles the user's Special when the opponent damages the user with a special move.

Light Screen will fail if the user is already under its effect. The effect of Light Screen is ignored by critical hits. If Light Screen causes the user's special to reach 1024 or higher at any time during battle calculations, it will be reduced mod 1024.

The effects of Light Screen can be lifted by Haze.

Generation II

Light Screen now remains in effect for 5 turns and will double the Special Defense of any Pokémon on the user's side of the field instead.

Haze can no longer lift the effects of Light Screen.

Generation III

Instead of doubling the Special Defense of affected Pokémon, Light Screen now technically halves the damage done to them by special moves; it still does not reduce damage done by moves that deal direct damage.

If multiple Pokémon are present on the user's side of the field, all of them are protected by Light Screen, but special damage is only reduced by a third rather than half.

Light Screen is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if an opponent uses Brick Break or Shadow Shed on it (even if it is immune to Brick Break due to being Ghost-type), unless it is protected from the move or the move misses.

Light Screen can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 1 bonus appeal point if Calm Mind was used in the previous turn.

Generation IV

Light Screen is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if a Pokémon uses Brick Break or Defog on its ally (even if it is immune to Brick Break due to being Ghost-type), unless it is protected from the move or the move misses.

If Light Clay is held when Light Screen is used, it will extend the duration of Light Screen from 5 to 8 turns.

Generation V onwards

Light Screen is removed from a Pokémon's side of the field if it is hit by Brick Break, Defog, Psychic Fangs, or Raging Bull, or if a Pokémon with Screen Cleaner is sent out. Light Screen is not removed if the target is immune to the move (e.g. a Ghost-type Pokémon targeted by Brick Break). Pokémon with the Ability Infiltrator ignore the effects of Light Screen when attacking.

Unlike Generations III and IV, Light Screen now always reduces damage by (roughly) a third rather than a half (specifically, with a multiplier of 2703/4096 in Generation V, or 2732/4096 in Generation VI onward) in Double Battles and Triple Battles, regardless of how many Pokémon on a given side are being protected by it. In Generation VII, Battle Royals also use this multiplier.

If powered up by a Psychium Z into Z-Light Screen, the user's Special Defense stat rises by one stage.

Using Glitzy Glow will set up Light Screen on the user's side of the field.

The user (and party from Gates to Infinity) gains the Light Screen status condition, halving damage from special moves. This lasts for 11-12RBTDS / 21GtISMD turns. The status can be ended early if the Pokémon is hit with Brick Break. Defog will also end the status early if used by an enemy in the Explorers and Adventure Squad series.

When used by a Gigantic Pokémon in Gates to Infinity, Light Screen has a base PP of 20.

Pokémon UNITE

In Pokémon UNITE, Light Screen is one of Mr. Mime's two starting moves, as well as one of Mew's possible second moves. Mr. Mime can learn it either at level 1 or 3 (depending if Fake Out is learned first), while Mew obtains it by reaching level 3 and choosing it over Coaching and Agility.

With Mr. Mime, Light Screen has the user create a wall of light in the designated area, preventing opposing Pokémon from passing. If opposing Pokémon are near the location where the wall is created, they're shoved and left unable to act for a short time.

By reaching level 6 with Mr. Mime, Light Screen is upgraded into either Barrier or Power Swap (previously Guard Swap).

With Mew, Light Screen has the user create a translucent wall at the designated location. Opposing Pokémon cannot pass through the wall and will be shoved if contact with it is made. If Mew's Electro Ball, Solar Beam, or Surf passes through the wall, their effects—such as damage, range, and area of effect—will be boosted. Also, if Light Screen is used again while the previous wall is still at play, it is pulled closer and starts moving with Mew. While so, attacks from opposing Pokémon that pass through it have their damage reduced.

By reaching level 12 with Mew, Light Screen is upgraded into Light Screen+, and the size of the wall is increased.

Trivia

Light Screen ending in Battle Revolution.
  • Light Screen displays animation when it ends on its own in Pokémon Battle Revolution.
  • Despite having distinct effects in the games, Reflect, Light Screen, Barrier, Protect, and Safeguard are often depicted in the animated series seemingly sharing the same effect that Protect has in the games (protecting the user from most the effect of moves).
