Magic Coat (Japanese: マジックコート Magic Coat) is a non-damaging Psychic-type move introduced in Generation III. Prior to Generation IV, it was the signature move of Spoink and Grumpig, but other Pokémon could still inherit it via breeding.

Effect

This move effect may be in need of research.
Reason: Do the details of the effects of Magic Bounce also apply to Magic Coat? What is the precedence for other Abilities that alter damage taken like Volt Absorb?
You can discuss this on the talk page.

For the remainder of the turn, Magic Coat reflects certain status moves back at the attacker. Refer below for the list of reflectable moves.

If a move targets an entire side (such as entry hazard moves), if any Pokémon on that side reflects the move with Magic Coat then the whole side is unaffected (and only the first Pokémon with Magic Coat or Magic Bounce will reflect the move).

A reflected move cannot be reflected by the new target's Magic Coat or Magic Bounce. Move-drawing Abilities redirect a move before it activates Magic Coat. Magic Coat takes effect before Soundproof.

Magic Coat is an increased priority move and will go before most moves. It fails if the user goes last in the turn.

Generation III

In this generation only, in a Double Battle, if a reflectable move targets both Pokémon on a side, then:

  • If the leftmost Pokémon is protected by Magic Coat, neither it nor its ally will take damage and the move will be reflected at both opponents.
  • If only the rightmost Pokémon is protected by Magic Coat, its ally will take damage first, and then the move will be reflected at the attacker.

In this generation only, Soundproof takes effect before Magic Coat.

Magic Coat's effect ends if it reflects a move.

Generation IV

In battles with multiple opponents, if a reflectable move targets multiple Pokémon on a side, then the move will be reflected at the attacker only (regardless of the position of the Pokémon protected by Magic Coat).

Generation V

Magic Coat's effect no longer ends if it reflects a move, so it can reflect multiple moves per turn.

In battles with multiple opponents, if a reflectable move targets multiple Pokémon on a side, then the move can be reflected at multiple opponents.

Generation VII

If powered up by a Psychium Z into Z-Magic Coat, the user's Special Defense rises by two stages.

Generation IX

Magic Coat cannot be selected in a battle.

Affected moves

The following moves can be reflected by Magic Coat. This list also applies to Magic Bounce.

Magic Coat gives the user (and teammates from Super Mystery Dungeon) the Magic Coat status, which causes certain moves targeting it to be reflected back at the attacker instead, without being affected by them. Magic Coat only reflects the effect the move would have on the user, rather than its usage; for example a move with multiple targets will still affect other targets (if they are not affected by the Magic Coat status condition), even if the Pokémon becomes incapable of action from the bounced move. Magic Coat does not bounce back attacks if the attacker is not adjacent, if the move has already been bounced back, or if it was cutting a corner. The status lasts for 11-12RBTDS / 6SMD turns.

The following moves can be reflected by Magic Coat:

Trivia

  • In Generation III, the status screen erroneously states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it targets the user (thus it does not need an accuracy check). Any move reflected by Magic Coat still has to undergo accuracy checks as normal, however.
  • In Generation VII, Blacephalon can learn this move by leveling up, but not by Move Tutor.
