Ghast farming is the practice of spawning and automatically killing ghasts, in order to obtain their drops, gunpowder and ghast tears, in large quantities.

Although gunpowder can be more easily obtained via creeper farming, ghasts are the only source of ghast tears, meaning that building a ghast farm is the only way of obtaining large quantities of ghast tears, which are useful for crafting end crystals and dried ghasts, as well as brewing potions of Regeneration.

Since dried ghasts can only otherwise be obtained from nether fossils in soul sand valleys, a ghast farm is one of two renewable ways to obtain happy ghasts, the other being bartering.

Ghasts only spawn in the Nether in the following biomes:

Soul Sand Valleys are the ideal biome for Ghast farming due to the fact that Ghasts are overwhelmingly more likely to spawn in Soul Sand Valleys than other biomes.

Although Ghasts may spawn in spaces that are 4 blocks tall, they must fly diagonally and therefore become stuck if they’re in a 4 block tall space. Putting a roof 4 blocks over a spawning platform for Ghasts ensures they won’t be able to move

Ghasts are the only mob in Soul Sand Valleys that can spawn at any light level, so Ghast farms should be well-lit in order to prevent skeletons from spawning in their place
