Silverfish farming is the process of using the Infested effect to generate large amounts of silverfish.

Why bother?

Large amounts of silverfish can be killed for 5 XP each, or used to generate a powerful force with the Wind Charged effect, farm cobwebs with the Weaving effect, or generate 2 medium slimes per silverfish with the Oozing effect. A medium slime spawns 2-4 small slimes when it is killed, resulting in an average of 15 XP and 9*(LootingLevel+1) slimeballs per silverfish. The silverfish or the slimes can also be used as a defense against players.

Mechanics

Infested entities have a 10% chance to spawn 1-2 silverfish when hurt. The silverfish spawn at the center of the affected entity's bounding box, and fling out in the direction the entity is facing. The damage source does not necessarily need to reduce the health of the affected entity.[1] For example, a snow golem's snowball may trigger a silverfish spawn. The quantity and chance of silverfish spawning are unaffected by the potency level of the potion. Entities with the Infested effect emit gray, silverfish-shaped particles. Allays and armadillos are the best mobs to use with Infested.

Allay-based farms

The general concept is to have the allays be in fire and surrounded by top slabs, as shown in the schematic.

Getting an allay

Allays have a 50% chance to generate in the wooden cages in pillager outposts, and in prison cells in woodland mansions. It's best to kill the nearby illagers before trying to take the allay from the structure. Once you choose which structure, search until you find an allay. Once you find an allay, you must leash it, and then lead it back to the area where you can duplicate your allay, ideally near your base or an amethyst geode. You need just one allay, but it is recommended to bring as many as you can in case an allay flies away or dies.

You can transport the allays however you like, but it is recommended to use the Nether since it is most likely the fastest (but riskiest) way back if you have a nether portal to your location. Avoid using an elytra. Allays are already flying, and if you fly too quickly with the elytra, the lead might snap, causing you to lose your allay.
