Nether wart is a fungus that gives off a gas allowing piglins to breathe in the Overworld.

Appearance

Nether wart appears as very small dark red mushrooms with a large cap compared to the stem. In its potion form, it appears as a dark red translucent liquid.

Properties

Nether wart can grow only on netherrack, the Nether's native soil. Piglins and hoglins breathe and consume the spores of Nether wart to sustain themselves. Without this, their minds and bodies will slowly decay, zombifying them beyond repair. As a workaround, Nether wart can be brewed into a potion, which can delay the effects. Such a potion was used by the piglins to attack Midport Village and was given to General Chungus to pass around. It can also be carried inside lanterns and waved to release gases that will keep a piglin alive as long as they breathe them in.

History

Nether wart has been around since the dawn of the Nether. Piglins have always relied on it to breathe, and Steve learned this upon entering the Nether, as well as the repulsive smell of nether wart.

When Malgosha learned the Orb had been taken to Midport Village, she harnessed nether wart to brew a potion and gave it to General Chungus to use. After that, some piglins used it to storm the Redstone Mines, Steve recognizing the smell immediately. Then, in all her time in the Overworld, the two Priestie boys waved nether wart lanterns to keep her alive. When Steve attacked her, the Priestie boys backed off, letting her perish, and ended up being the only piglins left alive.
