Designated hitter rule
The designated hitter rule was a regulation in baseball. According to the rule, a baseball player who didn't play in the outfield batted in the pitcher's stead.
The baseball league that the Pike City Pioneers and Cestus Comets belonged to considered using a designated hitter rule, ultimately deciding not to. Kasidy Yates informed Benjamin Sisko of this in 2371 when he inquired whether they used the rule. (DS9: "Family Business")
