Batter (baseball)

In the sport of baseball, a batter or hitter was a player who faced the opposing pitcher, with the goal of hitting the baseball with their baseball bat in order to become a runner.

A player who could bat facing the pitcher from either their left or right side was said to be able to switch hit. When Commander Benjamin Sisko encountered an alien posing as Buck Bokai, Bokai inquired if Sisko had "room on your team for a switch hitting third baseman with good power?" Sisko corrected Bokai, stating "good power from the left side,"; however, Bokai argued that he had "hit over twenty homers right handed in each of [his] first three years in the majors," leading Sisko to retort, "And never more than ten after that."
