Cascarrafa, the "City of Water", takes its name from Spanish and Portuguese words for cascada/cascata ("waterfall") and jarra ("jug") echoed in its localizations across languages. It is modeled after the Spanish city Mojácar, with tiered whitewashed streets set against semi-desert landscapes reminiscent of the Tabernas Desert in Almería. Its cascading fountains and irrigation channels evoke Andalusian-Islamic architecture traditions, such as acequias and Alpujarras waterworks. The city also draws inspiration from Portuguese coastal towns such as Porto Covo, with blue-trimmed houses and traditional pavement designs. The Spanish name, "Ciudad Cántara", recalls both the water jug cántara and the city of Alcántara, itself derived from the Arabic al-qanṭara ("the bridge").
