A warden (Japanese: キャプテン Captain) is a notable member of the Diamond or Pearl Clan in the Hisui region who is charged with taking care of certain Noble and Ride Pokémon. This responsibility often comes with making sure these Pokémon and their territory are safe, leaving them offerings of water and food to express the clan's gratitude.[1] During the course of Pokémon Legends: Arceus's plot, many of the wardens will either be tasked by the Galaxy Team or their own clans' leader to assist the player to summon a Ride Pokémon, or provide information on the Noble Pokémon in order to quell the Noble Pokémon who have been frenzied.
As part of the Diamond and Pearl Clans, wardens do not let their Pokémon inside a Poké Ball (with exception of Ingo), and if challenged to a Pokémon battle. Many of them can be rematched within Jubilife Village's Training Grounds. Two wardens of each clan will be fought during Path of Solitude challenges, where they would be fought in a row ending with their Clan Leader.
Warden also serves as their Trainer class, though it is only seen when battling Ingo, as he is the only one to battle the player in a standard Pokémon battle with Poké Balls. Palina, Iscan and Calaba are the only wardens who do not battle the player, however, Iscan is assigned a Trainer class internally.
In the core series games
Wardens have made their debut in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, playing a significant role in the plot's progression. Like the rest of their clans, these characters are known to have feuds with the members of the other clan. However, the wardens will often work together over the course of the game to cleanse the sky of the space-time rift.
Due to the occurrence of the space-time rift that casts over Mount Coronet, many of the noble Pokémon have gone into frenzy. The wardens who cared for these five Pokémon have misunderstood this situation, seeing it as a blessing from Almighty Sinnoh. But this in turn has caused destruction and harm to the environment and to the Pokémon themselves. Their Clan Leaders, Adaman and Irida set out to Jubilife Village to report to the Galaxy Team to help quell the frenzied noble Pokémon. Arezu attempts to fix the problem with Lady Lilligant on her own, misleading the others into thinking that the ride Ursaluna, cared for by Calaba, is instead frenzied. The player will battle Wardens Lian and Gaeric before quelling their noble Pokémon as a form of trust.
Prior to the events of the game, Warden Palina of the Pearl Clan was given her position after Irida became Leader of the Pearl Clan. Palina also lacked a Lord to watch over, as the previous Lord Arcanine had passed away, leaving two Growlithe in its place before the younger of the two taking his position. Gaeric had also trained Irida in preparing her position as Leader.
The remaining five wardens watch over the Ride Pokémon, offering to help the player summon them by using a Celestica Flute. Mai, Ingo, and Sabi are all battled before the player summons their ride Pokémon, also as a form of trust. While Calaba is not battled herself, her ride Pokémon, Ursaluna, is. After the quarrel with Lady Lilligant and Arezu, Calaba cares for Lady Lilligant for Arezu so that Arezu may focus on her job as a hair dresser. This makes Calaba the only warden to watch over both a noble and ride Pokémon.
Ingo too has come from the space-time rift, and was found by the Pearl Clan, claiming to have come from another world, because of this he is the only member of either clan to use Poké Balls. He, along with Lian, Gaeric, Sabi, Melli and Arezu can be battles at Jubilife Village's training grounds.
