Mohn (Japanese: モーン Mohn) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is Lillie and Gladion's father, Lusamine's husband, and a former Aether Foundation researcher.

In the core series games

During the events of the games, Mohn watches over Poké Pelago and explains its functions to the player. He does not make any other appearances in Pokémon Sun and Moon, but he is relevant to the story's context and lore. In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he does visit the player in person on Route 7 after they have finished Kiawe's trial, telling them to visit the archipelago if they wish to have some fun with the Pokémon who are resting in their Boxes. His appearance slightly differs between the games: his scarf and shorts are orange in Pokémon Sun and Moon and green in Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

As a professor working for the Aether Foundation, he was the first to confirm the existence of Ultra Wormholes and Ultra Beasts. A few years before the events of Pokémon Sun and Moon and Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, he vanished while on a mission to try to connect to an Ultra Wormhole, leaving behind only a weakened Cosmog, some papers on the Ultra Beast, Nihilego, and a theory on the Ultra Wormholes. It is uncertain how he ended up on Poké Pelago, and it is never discussed during the events of the games. Scientists found in Professor Burnet's Dimensional Research lab in Heahea City mention Mohn and his research on Ultra Wormholes, implying that some of his research was publicly known.

The research that Mohn has conducted can be found in the Lab area of Aether Paradise. According to documents found in Secret Lab B, it was discovered that another dimension was found beyond the Ultra Wormholes. Pokémon-like life was found in these wormholes and were named Ultra Beasts. Research found in the same lab suggests that Cosmog is speculated to be a type of Ultra Beast from another dimension that can create Ultra Wormholes under extreme life-taking stress. This dimension that it comes from was named Ultra Space. The Aether Foundation is working to experiment on Cosmog's stress in order to manipulate Ultra Wormholes to appear.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, after the player defeats Gladion at the Pokémon League, a month after the events of the main story, Mohn will pay a visit to Aether Paradise. Upon seeing Lusamine, he introduces himself as Mohn and compares the Paradise to Poké Pelago. They exchange thoughts on Pokémon conservation and how a Pokémon may just be left in a Trainer's PC Boxes alone. Lusamine asks if it is his first time visiting Aether Paradise, to which Mohn affirms. He does not seem to recognize the facility or Lusamine. Accepting that Mohn has both completely forgotten his past and finally found happiness, Lusamine bids him farewell.

In The Crown Tundra expansion of Pokémon Sword and Shield, Professor Mohn is mentioned in the Legendary Clue? as the discoverer of the Ultra Wormhole.

Pre-series

As a younger man, Mohn moved to the Alola region to continue researching Ultra Wormholes. He was also a powerful Trainer, who defeated Hala and earned himself a Z-Ring.

He founded the Aether Foundation alongside his wife Lusamine, and their colleagues Faba and Wicke. One day, Mohn was sucked into an Ultra Wormhole during one of his experiments, and had been presumed dead ever since. This accident caused Lusamine a lot of grief and she decided to never talk to her young children about their father. Lusamine almost placed his research into confidentiality, though Faba ended up moving it all to his lab on Aether Paradise.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon

Mohn first appeared in a wedding photograph with Lusamine in Mission: Total Recall!, where he was partially seen.

Mohn made his physical debut in a flashback in Showdown on Poni Island!. Lillie encountered her brother Gladion on Poni Island while he was searching for Tapu Fini, having heard that it possessed the ability to allow the living and dead to see each other again. Lillie said she had heard that he passed away while researching Ultra Wormholes, but Gladion was unable to confirm this.

In Memories in the Mist!, Gladion and Lillie searched through Tapu Fini's mist for Mohn, but were unable to find him. Hapu informed them that this was likely because Mohn was, in fact, still alive, and they decided to tell Lusamine of this possibility.

In The Secret Princess!, the Aether Foundation began searching for Mohn after Gladion informed Lusamine of his findings. Lusamine came to realize that her children were still very interested in their father and went on to reveal his secret study inside the family's Melemele Island mansion and entrust it to their care for the time being. She and Hobbes also revealed a lot about Mohn's past as a Trainer. Lillie discovered her father's Z-Ring, and she later received permission from Hala to temporarily wield it. She also uncovered an inactive Shiny Magearna, which Mohn had planned to repair so it could be a friend for her, but he never managed to get it working before he disappeared. Lillie then found one of her father's journals tucked behind the Artificial Pokémon, which documented his notes on Magearna.

In Chasing Memories, Creating Dreams!, when Gladion located his Zoroark on Melemele Island, Zoroark created an illusion of a moment from Gladion's childhood involving Mohn. Gladion informed Mohn that the then-infant Lillie was crying, earning thanks from Mohn. Lusamine then entered the room with Lillie, and Mohn helped her to stop crying.

Mohn briefly appeared in a flashback in Final Rivals!. When Gladion sent Zoroark out during his battle with Ash in the Manalo Conference, he thought of Mohn and asked his father to give him strength.

In Dreams of the Sun and Moon!, Mohn appeared, again as a part of Zoroark's illusion, which recreated the day Lillie first learned how to walk as an infant.

Mohn appeared in a flashback in Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, where he was seen in a photo.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In The Homecoming Crown!, Mohn was revealed to be living in the Crown Tundra, where his family found him. However, it turned out that he had amnesia and failed to remember them. They soon found out that he was living with a Shiny Nihilego, which he thought was his daughter, also called Lillie. The family eventually figured out that Mohn had wound up in Nihilego's world, where it had rescued him from and brought to the Crown Tundra in the Galar region through another Wormhole. It had then used its powers to make him see it as his daughter and lived with him for years, removing all the mirrors in the house and dirtying all the windows to prevent Mohn from seeing his reflection and regaining his memories, fearing that Mohn would leave it if he did. When Gladion showed Mohn his image in a mirror, he finally remembered everything and was truly reunited with his family. Before the Nihilego could fly away, it was invited into the family and caught with a Beast Ball.

In Helping the Hometown Hero!, Mohn's family, Ash, Goh, and Chloe arrived in Alola, attending a party to celebrate their return. During the party, Mohn reunited with Hobbes, Faba, Wicke, and Hala. The next day, Mohn watched Gladion participate in a Battle Royal match between Ash, Kiawe, and Professor Kukui.

This Shiny Magearna was a Pokémon that Mohn found and purchased at an antique store. He then stored it away in his secret study and planned on reviving it so it could play with Lillie, but he was never able to before his disappearance.

After learning of Magearna's existence in The Secret Princess!, Lillie went on to study Mohn's journals on Magearna. She fulfilled her father's dream and reactivated Magearna because of her raw emotions in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.

This Shiny Nihilego encountered Mohn when the Ultra Wormhole he passed through brought him to its world. Hearing him calling for Lillie while unconscious, Nihilego read his memory and learned of his lost family in Alola. It tried to bring him back by dragging him through another Ultra Wormhole, only for the pair to end up in the Crown Tundra instead. Nihilego brought Mohn to an abandoned house nearby, where it used its powers to make him see it as Lillie. They lived together in peace, with Nihilego playing the role of Lillie and concealing anything that could cause Mohn's memory to return, until the real Lillie's family found them. They managed to help Mohn overcome his amnesia, and together, the family welcomed Nihilego, as it had saved Mohn, made it possible for them to reunite with him, and had, in a way, become a second Lillie. They caught it in a Beast Ball and Gladion took it under his care.

Background

Years before the events in the manga, Mohn worked at the Aether Foundation alongside his wife Lusamine. At some point, Mohn gave an island that belonged to the foundation to Sun's great-grandfather so he could have his dream to build a Poké Pelago come true. As time went on, he started doubting the way the foundation is ran and as a result, Faba secretly pushed Mohn into an Ultra Wormhole, disappearing into it. This is what caused Lusamine to lose her mind and become obsessed with Ultra Beasts overtime as she assumed he actually abandoned her and their children for hating the foundation.

At some point, Mohn returned to Alola, but had developed amnesia, holding onto a pendant with a photo of his family inside it. He didn't remember his own name nor theirs, however, he knew they were really important to him and really wanted to see them again.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc

Sometime over 6 months prior to Madness!! Mother Lusamine!, when Lana sent messages to all Trial Captains to meet up, Mina started making her way to Poni Gauntlet, but she met Mohn who was still looking for his family. They talked and Mina felt bad for him so she borrowed the pendant after agreeing to look them too, but she totally forgot about it.

In Ray of Light!! Through the Crack in the Sky!, Mina met Lillie and recognized her as the girl in the pendant. After explaining everything, Lillie realized that was her father and took the pendant with her, determined to save Lusamine. Faba later had a dream of him pushing Mohn into the Ultra Wormhole, but as she wakes up, he orders Plumeria to murder Lusamine. Lillia also shows Gladion the pendant, proving that Mohn never abandoned them and is somewhere in Alola with no memory, which gives them hope to save their mother.

In Shock!! Father in the Pendant!, Lillie encounters Lusamine merged with one of her Nihilego, who's furious to see her new outfit, but Lillie takes courage and show her the pendant, which she instantly recognizes as Mohn's. Lillie tells her that they were never abandoned and asks her to got look for him together, which allows Lusamine to go back to normal, resulting in her fainting and Nihilego returning to its Beast Ball.
