Fuecoco (Japanese: ホゲータ Hogator) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

It evolves into Crocalor starting at level 16, which evolves into Skeledirge starting at level 36.

Along with Sprigatito and Quaxly, Fuecoco is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Paldea available at the beginning of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They were also the first Generation IX Pokémon to be revealed to the public on February 27, 2022, through a Pokémon Presents video presentation.

Biology

Fuecoco is a bipedal crocodilian Pokémon with a mostly red body and a white stomach and face. Its body contains a small flame sac, which constantly leaks fire energy due to its size. The energy releases in the form of two bright yellow tufts of flame on top of its head; should Fuecoco get excited, more of these tufts of flame may emerge.^[1] As shown in the in the Pokémon Horizons: The Series episode Charge! Galar Mine!, Fuecoco's tufts can emit light. Fuecoco has black eyes and triangular nostrils, and its mouth has three teeth, with one in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw. It has stubby arms and large feet with two black toes on each foot. Fuecoco has yellow square scales on its stomach, back, tail, and the soles of its feet. These scales are warm to the touch, although they can become heated. The scales absorb external heat, such as from warm rocks where it lies on, to be turned into fire energy.^[1]

Fuecoco is laid-back and does things at its own pace. It enjoys eating, and it will rush towards any food it sees.^[1] As shown in Pokémon Sleep, Fuecoco and its Evolutions are known to sometimes sleep with one eye open. While asleep, Fuecoco sometimes moves its mouth as if it is chewing.

Evolution

Fuecoco evolves into Crocalor, which evolves into Skeledirge.

Roy's Fuecoco

Fuecoco properly debuted in the main series in The Pendant That Starts It All (Part Two), as one of the wild Pokémon living aboard the Brave Olivine. He was officially caught by Roy in The Ancient Poké Ball, Terastallized into a Fire type for the first time in Sparkle! The Glow of Flame and Art during Roy's Tera Training battle against Brassius, and evolved into Crocalor in Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!.

Fuecoco debuted in Speeding! Paldea's Prince of Speed!!, under the ownership of Violet. He's his first partner Pokémon, received from Clavell. He later evolved into a Crocalor.

Origin

Fuecoco appears to be based on a baby crocodile, although it has some similarities to theropod dinosaurs and crocodile-shaped toys. In Pokémon Sleep, Fuecoco and its Evolutions are revealed to sleep with one eye open, just like real-life crocodiles. Its Fire typing may be inspired by the fact that crocodiles release excess heat through their mouths. Alternatively, The fiery tufts on its head, its coloration, and its overall body shape together make it resemble a bell pepper or a chili pepper, like the ghost pepper.

Given its final Evolution, the light color of its face might be inspired by a calavera design, commonly found in celebrations of the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead. Fuecoco may also reference to some crocodile legends in the Iberian Peninsula, such as the Drac de Na Coca, whose preserved body with an exposed skull may have inspired a skeletal appearance, and whose presence in pyrotechnical correfoc festivities may have inspired its Fire type. It may also be based on Cucafera, depicted as a crocodilian dragon creature with a round body.

Name origin

Fuecoco may be a combination of fuego (Spanish for fire) and cocodrilo (Spanish for crocodile). It may also come from fuocoso (Italian for fiery, especially relating to music).

Hogator may be a combination of 火 ho (fire), ほげー hogē (onomatopoeia for being dumbfounded), fogata (Spanish for campfire) or hoguera (Spanish for bonfire), and gator. It may also involve malagueta (type of chili pepper) or melegueta (grains of paradise; a spice).
