Quaxly (Japanese: クワッス Kuwassu) is a Water-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

It evolves into Quaxwell starting at level 16, which evolves into Quaquaval starting at level 36.

Along with Sprigatito and Fuecoco, Quaxly is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Paldea available at the beginning of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They were also the first Generation IX Pokémon to be revealed to the public on February 27, 2022, through a Pokémon Presents video presentation.

Biology

Quaxly is a white duckling-like Pokémon. It has a yellow beak and blue eyes. It has teal webbed feet and a large teal coif-like crest that covers its head, with a feathery tuft in the front and a white curvy line shaped like a wave. Quaxly's coif has a smooth feel thanks to the rich, moist cream that holds it. The cream it secretes can repel grime. The coif can become unkempt should it get dry.^[1]

Quaxly is an earnest and tidy Pokémon, and tends to overthink things. Quaxly's feathers secrete a glossy gel which protects its body against water and grime. It hates getting itself dirty, especially on its head. Quaxly's strong legs allow it to swim without issues, even in strong currents. It also uses its legs to repeatedly kick its foes with swift speed.^[1] Although found in Paldea, Quaxly is not native to the region, instead having migrated from faraway places a long time ago. As mentioned in the Sleep Style Dex, the coif on its head grows dry and messy should Quaxly sleep for a very long time. However, this tend to happen on extremely rare occasions.

Evolution

Quaxly evolves into Quaxwell, which evolves into Quaquaval.

Dot's Quaxly

Quaxly properly debuted in the main series in The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One), appearing in one of Nidothing's videos. He was one of the wild Pokémon living aboard the Brave Olivine. He was officially caught by Dot in Quaxly, We Can Do It, Terastallized into a Water type for the first time in Trending Terastallization! Dance, Dance, Quaxly! during Dot's Tera Training battle against Iono, and evolved into Quaxwell in Dance, Quaxly! The Blue Medali Step!.

A Quaxly appeared in Breathe Out, under the ownership of Hohma. It evolved into Quaxwell in Take a Breath, during an impromptu training session at Caph Squad's Base.

Trivia

• Quaxly is the only one of the first partner Pokémon that is foreign to the region that it was introduced in, as evidenced by its Pokédex entry in Pokémon Scarlet.
• In Generation IX, prior to the Version 2.0.1 update of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Quaxly and its Evolution were unable to learn Substitute and Sleep Talk via TM. However, this has since been fixed.

Origin

Quaxly appears to be based on a duckling of the Crested domestic duck breed or the South American crested duck. The crest itself resembles a beret, a turban, or a pompadour hairstyle. The crest might also be a visual pun on the hairstyle called the ducktail. The teal colorations on its feet and crest may be inspired by the blue-footed booby, or another visual pun on the teal (a type of duck). Its behaviour may also be based on hornpipe dancing.

Quaxly's Pokédex entry in Scarlet could be a reference to the exotic origin of aforementioned species in regard to Iberia. The crested breed of ducks was introduced from the Dutch East Indies and popularized in North America. Crested ducks and blue-footed boobies are native to South America. Given the carnival theme in its Evolutions, this may also refer to the Rio Carnival.

Name origin

Quaxly may be a combination of quack, wax (referring to hair wax), and duckling.

Kuwassu may be derived from クワック kuwakku (quack) and an anagram of ワックス wakkusu (wax).
