A mountaineer is an illager that spawns in various locations in Minecraft Dungeons. Mountaineers have three variants, identifiable by their coat color and weapon type; the first variant wears a brown coat, the second wears gray with a green backpack, and the third one wears red with leather boots and shoulder pads.

Behavior

Attack

Mountaineers behave similarly to the old AI of vindicators before 1.7.2.0, running up to the hero and attacking them via melee, with their axes. They have a delay and cannot move when they are attacking.

Brace

Mountaineers place their axe into the ground when in contact with the wind in order to not be blown away.

Sounds

Mountaineer axes use the sound effects of normal axes.

Old

These old sound effects are released with the new sound effects and currently unused.

History

Minecraft Dungeons
October 3, 2020							Howling Peaks announced during Minecraft Live 2020, with the release date set to be somewhere in December 2020.
October 19, 2020							A design of the third mountaineer tier that later goes unused in the game is shown.
1.5.0.0							Added the textures and sound files for mountaineers and mountaineer axes, currently unused.
1.7.2.0							Added mountaineers.
1.10.2.0							Now appears within the Frosted Fjord and the Lost Settlement.

Issues

Issues for Minecraft Dungeons relating to "Mountaineer" are no longer maintained on the bug tracker since September 28, 2023.

Trivia

• Except for when stunned, mountaineers are almost always squinting or half-closing their eyes.
• In the artwork for the Howling Peaks DLC, mountaineers can be seen climbing the peaks while using axes.
• Despite behaving like vindicators, mountaineers are not a vindicator variant.
• Mountaineers lack the emission texture, so the buttons on tier 1 and 2 mountaineers do not glow, unlike tier 1 and 2 vindicators. Therefore, enchanted mountaineers do not have glowing eyes or special textures.
