Raging Bolt Ogerpon, more commonly known as simply Raging Bolt ex, is a Pokémon Trading Card Game deck archetype that was mainly played in the 2024-25 and the 2025-26 seasons of the Standard format. The deck's two primary Pokémon, Raging Bolt ex and Teal Mask Ogerpon ex, complement each other in this archetype, with Teal Mask Ogerpon ex attaching Energy cards to itself and Raging Bolt ex discarding those Energy cards in order to deal massive amounts of damage.

Raging Bolt Ogerpon is among the most popular archetypes in both the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons of the Standard format, and has earned many notable finishes, earning at least Top 4 in various Regional events, International Championships, Japanese Championship League events, and Pokémon World Championships.

Strategy

Professor Sada's Vitality

The card Raging Bolt ex's primary attack, "Bellowing Thunder", does 70 damage for each Basic Energy card the player discards from among their Pokémon. This attack does not have a damage limit, meaning the player can theoretically deal any number of damage using this attack and Knock Out anything on the opposing Active Spot. However, while Raging Bolt ex's attack is impressive on paper, there were not many robust supporting Pokémon or Trainer cards that can consistently supply the Energy attachments needed to deal the desired amount of damage every turn, especially in contrast to the Chien-Pao ex archetype, which has a similar style of attack but also has Baxcalibur that allows the player to attach as many Basic Water (Water) Energy cards to their Pokémon as they like. Due to this, for a while, the Raging Bolt ex deck was derogatorily referred to by Pokémon TCG players as "Raging Bulk" (in reference to "bulk cards", cards that players and sellers will have a bulk supply of since they are not sought after).

This perception all changed with the release of Teal Mask Ogerpon ex from the Twilight Masquerade expansion. Its "Teal Dance" Ability, which allows the player to attach a Basic Grass (Grass) Energy to it and draw a card, complements Raging Bolt ex as both a draw engine and a supporting Pokémon. By using both Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Professor Sada's Vitality, the player can bank enough Energy to consistently deal massive damage with Raging Bolt ex's "Bellowing Thunder" attack. Later expansions would release more cards that support the Raging Bolt Ogerpon archetype, making it even more consistent.

The general game plan of Raging Bolt Ogerpon requires the player to have Basic Grass (Grass) Energy cards in their hand to use Teal Mask Ogerpon ex's "Teal Dance", and Basic Lightning (Lightning) or Fighting (Fighting) Energy cards in their discard pile to attach to Raging Bolt ex using Professor Sada's Vitality.

Key cards

2025-26 Standard format

Noctowl
Prime Catcher
  • Raging Bolt ex - The deck's primary attacker, its "Bellowing Thunder" attack does 70 damage for each Basic Energy card that the player discards from among their Pokémon. There is no upper bound to the damage the player can deal with this attack. Its "Burst Roar" attack can also be used to refresh the player's hand in the early game. Being an Ancient Pokémon, it synergises with the card Professor Sada's Vitality that can accelerate Basic Energy to it.
  • Teal Mask Ogerpon ex - Its "Teal Dance" Ability allows the player to attach 1 Basic Grass (Grass) Energy card to itself every turn, and to draw a card in the process. These Energy attachments serve as discard fodder for Raging Bolt ex's "Bellowing Thunder" attack. Alternatively, Teal Mask Ogerpon ex itself can serve as a secondary attacker, using its "Myriad Leaf Shower" attack in matchups against Darkness-type and Fighting-type Pokémon that have a Grass-type Weakness, such as Charizard ex, Marnie's Grimmsnarl ex, or Cynthia's Garchomp ex.
  • Squawkabilly ex - Its "Squawk and Seize" Ability can only be used on the player's first turn, but it lets the player discard their hand and draw a new hand of 6 cards. Useful in the early game to discard Basic Energy cards and dig through the player's deck for more resources.
  • Raging Bolt - This single-Prize Raging Bolt can snipe low HP Basic and Stage 1 Pokémon on the opponent's Bench thanks to its "Thunderburst Storm" attack, which does 30 damage to 1 of the opponent's Pokémon for each Energy attached to the Raging Bolt.
  • Noctowl - The most common engine in 2025-26 Standard format Raging Bolt Ogerpon decks, Noctowl's "Jewel Seeker" Ability can be used upon evolving it if the player has any Tera Pokémon in play, and allows them to search their deck for any 2 Trainer cards. This Ability allows the player to cherry-pick specific combinations of Trainer cards they may need to power up their Pokémon or develop their board state during their turn.
    • Hoothoot - Players will typically run a combination of 70 HP Hoothoot (there are two legal ones in the 2025-26 Standard format) and the 80 HP Hoothoot from the Prismatic Evolutions expansion. The 80 HP Hoothoot has a higher Retreat Cost but with higher HP as well, preventing easy Knock Outs from Dragapult ex decks using Hawlucha to set up damage.
  • Fan Rotom - Its "Fan Call" Ability lets the player search their deck for 3 Colorless-type Pokémon with 100 HP or less, but only during their first turn. This is typically used to search for Hoothoot to Bench and for Noctowl to evolve into in the next turn. It also has the "Assault Landing" attack which does 70 damage, but only if there is a Stadium card in play; for just 1 Energy, this attack can Knock Out evolving Basic Pokémon such as Dreepy, Charmander, Ralts, Gimmighoul, etc., allowing the player to take an early Prize lead.
  • Ditto - Its "Transformative Start" Ability, which can only be used on the player's first turn, allows them to swap the Ditto in the Active Spot for any other Basic Pokémon in their deck. This card can also be searched using Fan Rotom's "Fan Call" Ability.
  • Latias ex - Its "Skyliner" Ability nullifies the Retreat Cost of all the player's Basic Pokémon in play, providing the Raging Bolt Ogerpon archetype with great mobility.
  • Professor Sada's Vitality - Accelerates a Basic Energy card to up to 2 of the player's Ancient Pokémon and draws 3 cards from the player's deck. This card is important in that it both sets up Raging Bolt ex's attack and adds more resources into the player's hand. Since Professor Sada's Vitality attaches Energy from the player's discard pile, the player will typically want to run cards that allows them to easily discard other cards, such as Earthen Vessel or Ultra Ball.
  • Crispin - Allows the player to search their deck for up to 2 Basic Energy cards of different types, put 1 of them into their hand, and attach the other one onto their Pokémon. The player may search their deck for a Basic Lightning and Fighting Energy to attach to their Raging Bolt ex, or a Basic Grass Energy for use with Teal Mask Ogerpon ex's "Teal Dance".
  • Earthen Vessel - Allows the player to search their deck for up to 2 Basic Energy cards, but requires them to discard another card from their hand. This card can be used to add Basic Energy cards to both the player's hand and their discard pile.
  • Energy Switch - Allows the player to move a Basic Energy from 1 of their Pokémon to another of their Pokémon. Since Professor Sada's Vitality attaches 1 Basic Energy to up to 2 Ancient Pokémon, Energy Switch can be used to move 1 of those Basic Energy to a Raging Bolt ex to fulfill its "Bellowing Thunder" Energy requirement.
  • Prime Catcher - The ACE SPEC card of choice for Raging Bolt Ogerpon decks, it allows the player to switch an opponent's Benched Pokémon to the Active Spot, as well as switching their own Active Pokémon with 1 of their Benched Pokémon. This lets the player target specific Pokémon on the opponent's Bench, allowing the Raging Bolt Ogerpon deck to take easy 2-Prize Knock Outs and kickstart the Prize race or maintain a 2-2-2 Prize map.
  • Energy Retrieval, Superior Energy Retrieval, and/or Night Stretcher - Cards that allow the player to retrieve Basic Energy cards from their discard pile into their hand. These are commonly used to retrieve Basic Grass Energy cards to re-use Teal Mask Ogerpon ex's "Teal Dance" Ability after they are discarded by Raging Bolt ex's "Bellowing Thunder" attack. Night Stretcher has an added utility in that it can also recover Pokémon from the discard pile.
  • Area Zero Underdepths - Expands both players' Bench slots from 5 to 8 if they have any Tera Pokémon in play (Teal Mask Ogerpon ex, in the case of this archetype). More Bench slots allows the player to Bench more Hoothoot to evolve into "Jewel Seeker" Noctowl.

Radiant Greninja
  • Radiant Greninja - Its "Concealed Cards" Ability lets the player draw 2 cards if they discard an Energy card from their hand. Useful as a draw boost, and the player would naturally want Basic Energy cards in the discard pile.
  • PokéStop - Discards the top 3 cards of the player's deck, but any Item cards discarded in this way goes into the player's hand. The Raging Bolt Ogerpon archetype tends to run a ton of Item cards, and PokéStop can also dump Basic Energy cards into the discard pile.
  • Switch Cart - Allows the player to switch their Active Basic Pokémon into their Bench and heal 30 damage from it. This is useful in Raging Bolt Ogerpon decks since the archetype almost exclusively runs Basic Pokémon, and allows the player to break through strategies such as Snorlax Stall.

Possible tech cards

The following cards can be used in Raging Bolt Ogerpon decks in place of certain cards included in the above lists.

2025-26 Standard format

Koraidon
Iron Leaves ex
  • Fighting-type single-Prize Pokémon: At least one of these are often included in Raging Bolt Ogerpon decks as a single-Prize attacker, and to provide coverage against Lightning-type, Darkness-type, and Colorless-type Pokémon that have a Fighting-type Weakness. All of these cards are also Ancient Pokémon, allowing them to be powered up by Professor Sada's Vitality.
    • Slither Wing - Its "Burning Turbulence" attack costs 2 Fighting (Fighting) Energy and does 90 damage to itself, but also deals 120 damage to the opponent's Active Pokémon and afflicts them with the Burned Special Condition.
    • Koraidon - Its "Unrelenting Onslaught" attack normally does only 30 damage, but it does 150 more damage if any of the player's other Ancient Pokémon used an attack during their last turn. Unlike Slither Wing's "Burning Turbulence" attack which requires Fighting Energy, Koraidon's "Unrelenting Onslaught" attack can be accessed by attaching 2 Energy of any type.
    • Sandy Shocks - Its "Magnetic Burst" attack does 90 damage if the player has 3 or more Energy in play. While the damage is not affected by Weakness, it still allows the player to take early Knock Outs on low-HP Basic Pokémon. This card's functionality has largely been superseded by Fan Rotom since the release of the Stellar Crown expansion.
  • Mew ex - Its "Restart" Ability lets the player draw cards until they have 3 cards in their hand, which is useful as a draw boost. It also has no Retreat Cost, which is useful as a pivot in case the player does not want to put Latias ex into play.
  • Iron Leaves ex - While a Future Pokémon appears to be out-of-place in an Ancient-themed deck, it is an efficient attacker that is easy to use thanks to its "Rapid Vernier" Ability; when it is played from the hand onto the Bench, the player may switch it into the Active Spot and move any number of Basic Energy cards from their other Benched Pokémon to it. This card's "Prism Edge" attack deals 180 damage and can Knock Out low HP Basic Pokémon ex such as Squawkabilly ex and Mew ex, or Pokémon ex that are weak to the Grass type.
  • Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex - Its "Blood Moon" attack does 240 damage and costs 1 Energy less for each Prize card the opponent has taken. It is useful in the late game to take a final 2-prize Knock Out and secure the win.
  • Budew - Its "Itchy Pollen" attack prevents the opponent from using any Item cards during their next turn. Useful for slowing the opponent's development of their board as the player sets up their own board with Hoothoot and Teal Mask Ogerpon ex.
  • Iron Bundle - Another Future Pokémon, its "Hyper Blower" Ability forces the opponent to move their Active Pokémon into their Bench and bring up 1 of their Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot. This can be used to force the opponent to bring up an important Pokémon to Knock Out if they try to stall the player.
  • Chien-Pao - Its "Snow Sink" Ability discards any Stadium card in play when it is Benched from the player's hand during their turn. This can remove the player's own Area Zero Underdepths in play, allowing them to remove non-essential Benched Pokémon (such as already evolved Noctowl) that could be targeted by damage-placing attacks or Abilities such as those of Dragapult ex, Munkidori, or Froslass.
  • Professor Turo's Scenario - Despite being a Future card, this is a general utility Supporter that lets the player pick up any of their Pokémon in play back into their hand. This can be used to "heal" a damaged Raging Bolt ex, or pick up a "Jewel Seeker" Noctowl to be used again to evolve another Benched Hoothoot.
  • Iono and/or Judge - Common hand disruption Supporter cards.
  • Jamming Tower - Nullifies the effect of all Pokémon Tool cards attached to both players' Pokémon. This can hinder decks that rely on Pokémon Tools such as Bravery Charm to boost their HP or Air Balloon to reduce their Retreat Cost. This Stadium can also remove an Area Zero Underdepths in play, which lets the player remove non-essential Benched Pokémon as mentioned above.
  • Pokémon Catcher - Allows the player to switch in 1 of their opponent's Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot, but works on a coin flip.
  • Pokégear 3.0 - Allows the player to look at the top 7 cards of their deck and add a Supporter card they find there into their hand. This card can be used to guarantee a Professor Sada's Vitality or a Crispin, especially if the player doesn't run "Jewel Seeker" Noctowl in their deck.
  • Bravery Charm - Adds +50 to the maximum HP of the Basic Pokémon it is attached to, this card is commonly used with Raging Bolt ex to give it more bulk. In the 2025-26 Standard format, most Raging Bolt Ogerpon decks forgo buffing their Raging Bolt ex in favor of using single-Prize attackers to maintain a positive Prize trade.

Previous formats

  • Trekking Shoes - Allows the player to dig further into their deck by looking at the top card and adding it into their hand. If they don't want to (eg. they draw into a Basic Energy card), they can choose to discard it and draw a new card from their deck.
