Release information
Sword & Shield Series
This card was first released in each of the Japanese V Starter Sets. The English print was first released in the Sword & Shield expansion as a Holofoil, along with Full Art and Secret Rainbow Rare prints. The Regular print features artwork by Yusuke Ohmura, while the Full Art and Secret prints feature artwork by kirisAki. All three Sword & Shield prints originate from the Japanese Sword expansion. Non Holofoil versions of the Regular print were included in the Sword & Shield and Rebel Clash Build & Battle Boxes as well as every Theme Deck of the Sword & Shield Series.
Another new print with artwork by Yusuke Kozaki featuring Professor Willow was released in the summer of 2021 around the world as part of a promotion to celebrate Pokémon GO's fifth anniversary, the 25th anniversary of the Trading Card Game, and as the first collaboration between Pokémon GO and the TCG. Each individual card had a special promotional code printed below its effect that allowed players to participate in Special Research in Pokémon GO.[1][2]
The Regular Professor Sada print (numbered 021/SV-P) and Professor Turo print (numbered 022/SV-P) were also printed as Japanese SV-P Promotional cards, and were two of nine cards that could be found in 2023 Endorsed Independent Event Trainers Packs. Certified Event Organizers distributed these packs at events they oversaw in January 2023. These prints feature the Event Organizer logo in the bottom right corner of their respective illustrations. These prints were later available in 2024 Endorsed Independent Event Trainers Packs, which began to be distributed by Event Organizers at events from January 2024.
In Japan, the Regular prints of Professor Sada and Professor Turo were subsequently reprinted many times. The Professor Sada card was available again in four of the standard ex Start Decks released on July 7, 2023—the Grass Decidueye ex Start Deck, the Water Greninja ex Start Deck, the Fighting Koraidon ex Start Deck, and the Darkness Houndoom ex Start Deck—as well as the secret Dragon-type Centered Deck initially exclusive to Random ex Start Decks. The Professor Turo card was similarly available in the standard Fire Victini ex Start Deck, Lightning Miraidon ex Start Deck, Psychic Clefable ex Start Deck, and Metal Melmetal ex Start Deck, plus the secret Colorless-type Centered Deck. The secret decks were later sold separately as the Tera Dragonite ex Start Deck and the Tera Greedent ex Start Deck from November 24, 2023.
Two Japanese products released on July 28, 2023 included both prints: the Ruler of the Black Flame Deck Build Box and the 2023 Pokémon World Championships Yokohama Deck: Pikachu. Copies in the World Championships Deck were printed on Mirror Holofoil paper. In Japan, Non Holofoil prints were subsequently available in the Terastal Starter Sets from September 22, 2023—the Professor Sada variant was included in the Terastal Starter Set Skeledirge ex, while the Professor Turo variant was included in the Terastal Starter Set Mewtwo ex. Non Holofoil prints of both designs were also included in the Venusaur & Charizard & Blastoise Special Deck Set ex, released on November 10, 2023, while the Shiny Treasure ex subset, released on December 1, 2023, included Holofoil versions of both designs. The Shiny Treasure ex reprints prompted both to be included in the Paldean Fates expansion outside Asia.
A pair of Japanese Starter Deck & Build Sets was released on January 26, 2024—copies of the Ancient Koraidon ex Starter Deck & Build Set included the Professor Sada print; copies of the Future Miraidon ex Starter Deck & Build Set included the Professor Turo print. Both artworks were featured in the four decks of the Japanese Pokémon Card Game Battle Academy, which was released on March 8, 2024. The Sprigatito ex Deck and Lucario ex Deck included the Professor Sada print, while the Pikachu ex Deck and Greninja ex Deck included the Professor Turo print. Each of these cards also has a colored silhouette of the eponymous Pokémon to signify which deck they belong to. Both prints were also available in the May 17, 2024 Battle Master Decks: the Terastal Charizard ex deck has the Professor Sada print, while the Chien-Pao ex deck has the Professor Turo print. The Stellar Miracle Deck Build Box was available from July 19, 2024 and included both designs. The two were also available in the Stellar Tera Type Starter Sets from August 30, 2024—copies of Professor Sada were included in the Sylveon ex deck, while copies of Professor Turo were included in the Ceruledge ex deck.
The Professor Sada and Professor Turo prints were also reprinted as two of the eight SV-P Promotional cards available in Pokémon Card Gym Promo Card Pack 7, which was distributed at Pokémon Card Gym venues able to do so from July 19, 2024.[3] These prints feature the Pokémon Card Gym logo.
This card's effect is identical to Professor Juniper and Professor Sycamore. As such, it was ruled that a deck may only contain one of the three.
Professor's Research was specifically named to prevent the need for future rulings such as this for subsequent prints featuring different Professors.[4] The name of the specific Professor on each printing of this card is printed in the upper right corner.
The Professor Oak Regular print of this card was featured in the Illust StoryIS02, Professor's Research.
