Eggcellent Togepi (Japanese: ふしぎなタマゴMysterious Egg) is the 33rd chapter of the Magical Pokémon Journey manga.
Plot
Hazel reads a story to Pikachu and Clefairy about an elderly couple who adopts a boy born from a watermelon that was floating down a river. Once she finishes reading, the two Pokémon begin heading back to their homes, when they find an Egg floating in the river. Reminded of the story, the two fetch the Egg and run it back to Hazel.
Hazel and Almond explain to Pikachu and Clefairy that there is a Pokémon inside the Egg. Excited to be seen as "big brothers," the two become determined to protect it. Word gets around quickly about the Egg, and Grandpa, Bulbasaur, and Charmander come over to visit it. Bulbasaur begins playfully tossing it into the air, horrifying Pikachu and Clefairy. Charmander then takes it from her, saying the right thing to do is keep it warm. He puts his tail flame by the Egg, which also scares Pikachu and Clefairy. Soon after, Coconut and her Eevee arrive with a homemade incubator and offer to help, but it explodes before she can use it.
Wanting to protect the Egg from everybody, Pikachu and Clefairy take it to a cliff on the far edge of town. Pikachu finds a grassy ledge just below, and jumps down to keep the Egg there. Clefairy, too scared to head down himself, decides to keep watch. Some time later, the two fall asleep.
When Pikachu wakes up, it asks Clefairy to pull it and the Egg up from the ledge, but he remains asleep. Clefairy then rolls off the cliff, landing on Pikachu. The Egg begins to move on its own toward the edge of the ledge, and Pikachu is unable to grab it under Clefairy's weight. The Egg begins to plummet, and Clefairy falls after it, taking Pikachu with him.
After the two crash to the ground, they rush over to the Egg to find a large crack in it. They hurry it over to Hazel, desperate for her help, but soon realize there is nothing they can do. The two tearfully embrace the Egg and apologize to it. Suddenly, another crack appears in the shell, and Togepi hatches. Togepi hugs Pikachu and Clefairy, calling them "Papapii" and "Mamapii," respectively. The two are overjoyed, happy to be Togepi's parents. Togepi then greets the others, calling the girls "Mamapii" and the boys "Papapii," confusing Clefairy.
When this chapter first premiered in Japanese in Ciao magazine, it was entitled ポケモンのタマゴ大発見! (Discovery of the Pokémon Egg). When it appeared in the Japanese version of volume six, it was retitled ふしぎなタマゴ (Mysterious Egg).
