-ਆਉਣਾ

Punjabi

Etymology

Inherited from Old Punjabi -ਆਵਣਾ (-āvaṇā), from Prakrit -𑀆𑀯𑁂𑀤𑀺 (-āvedi), from Sanskrit -आपयति (-āpayati, suffix that forms some denominative verbs, occasionally with causative meaning), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *-eh₂yéti (if so then cognate with Belarusian -аць (-acʹ, infinitive suffix for class 1 verbs)). Likely from a form of -आपयति (-āpayati) suffixed with Sanskrit -अन (-ana), such as *-आपन (-āpana) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-). Cognate with Nepali -आउनु (-āunu) and Hindi -आना (-ānā).
