  • From Proto-Indo-Iranian *níš, possibly from a Proto-Indo-European *nís (“out, away”). Cognate with Old Avestan 𐬥𐬍𐬱 (nīš) and possibly Old Church Slavonic нищь (ništĭ, “poor”).
