Alpha Leonis system

The Alpha Leonis system, also known as the Regulus system or the 32 Leonis system, was an inhabited planetary system in the Beta Quadrant.

Notable lifeforms in this system included the eel-birds of Regulus V and the Regulan bloodworms of Regulus II. (TOS: "Amok Time", "The Trouble with Tribbles"; DS9: "The Nagus")

Components

Stellar system

This system was a quaternary star system. It was organized into a pair of binary star systems.

In the first binary system, there was the primary star Regulus (the proper name for Alpha Leonis Aa). It was a B-type subgiant. Its companion was the white dwarf Alpha Leonis Ab.

In orbit of this system, there was a second binary system with the companion stars Alpha Leonis B, a K-type dwarf, and Alpha Leonis C, a red dwarf. (ENT: "Cold Front")

Planetary system

In this system, there were several planets, with some of them habitable. Some planets in this system were Regulus, Regulus II, Regulus III, and Regulus V. (TOS: "The Cage", "The Menagerie, Part I", "Amok Time"; DS9: "Fascination")

History

In 2154, a Vulcan High Command attack fleet massed in this system in preparation for an abortive preemptive strike against the Andorians. Regulus was the closest accessible star known to be outside the maximum range of Andorian Imperial Guard listening posts. (ENT: "Kir'Shara")

A century later, in 2254, Christopher Pike considered retiring and going into business on Regulus or on the Orion colony. (TOS: "The Cage", "The Menagerie, Part I")

In 2257, during the first Federation-Klingon War, this system was occupied by the Klingons. (DIS: "The War Without, The War Within")

In 2366, this system was in need of medical supplies, which were transported there by the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Vengeance Factor")

Prior to 2371, a science academy was founded on Regulus III. In the opinion of Commander Benjamin Sisko, the CO of Deep Space 9, this was a good school. (DS9: "Fascination")

Stellar cartography

The Alpha Leonis system was visible from Earth in the constellation Leo. This system was approximately 79 light years from Sol and 300 light years from the Bajoran system. (DS9: "Fascination")

Enterprise star chart 2154

The location of Regulus (Alpha Leonis) on a United Earth star chart, 2154

In the 2150s, this system's position was labeled on an United Earth star chart which was displayed in several crew and guest quarters aboard the Enterprise. (Star Trek: Enterprise, set decoration))

In 2259, the location of this system was labeled on a stellar cartography chart that was seen on the USS Enterprise's ready room viewscreen. This system's symbol had a blue color, indicating that it was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (SNW: "Strange New Worlds", "Children of the Comet", "Spock Amok")

In 2293, the location of Regulus in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled in a star chart that was in Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country okudagram)

On stardate 1292.4, this system's position was labeled in a chart used during a Section 31 Alpha Team briefing. (Star Trek: Section 31)

The system's location was labeled in a Federation star chart that was in Fleet Admiral Kirsten Clancy's office at Starfleet Headquarters in 2399 and on the bridge of the USS Titan-A in 2401. The Regulus system was in or near to Federation space. (PIC: "Maps and Legends", "The Next Generation", "Disengage")

In 2401, this system's position was labeled on a star chart used by Captain William T. Riker during his attempt at finding the last known location of the SS Eleos XII. (PIC: "The Next Generation")

Background information

The connection between the Alpha Leonis system and the star Regulus was established in the Star Trek: Discovery episode "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad".

Information on this system was derived from the episodes and films, the reference works Star Trek: Star Charts and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library, and real-world sources. The reference works were used extensively in the creation of star charts seen in Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: Prodigy, and Star Trek: Lower Decks.

In the Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I", pp. 56, 61, and 62) and Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), in the late 24th century, the system was a destination on the major space lanes. The planets Regulus III and Regulus V were listed as Federation members in 2378.

The star chart seen in the series Star Trek: Enterprise made its first appearance in Crewman Daniels quarters in "Cold Front". It was also seen in several other episodes of the series, from 2151 to 2154. (For more information, see Federation star charts#United Earth Alpha/Beta star chart)

Apocrypha

In the novelization of the episode TOS: "The Man Trap" in Star Trek 1, the planet M-113 was the eighth planet in the system, Regulus VIII.
