Post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder or syndrome, shortened as PTSD, was a psychological condition caused by exposure to an extremely traumatic event. Characteristic symptoms included anxiety and flashbacks. Patients might also go into shock, at which point they would be unable to function. During the mid-23rd century, Starfleet PTSD regulations required full-duty quarantine until treatment was possible. (DIS: "Into the Forest I Go", "Despite Yourself")

Lieutenant Ash Tyler appeared to suffer from post traumatic stress disorder following his imprisonment and torture by the Klingon L'Rell. Tyler suffered from nightmares after his rescue. In 2261, Erica Ortegas displayed signs of PTSD after her ordeal aboard the Gorn destroyer, including losing half of her right hand and being severely wounded by a Gorn during the escape. The trauma caused insubordinate and reckless behavior when faced with a shipmate being in a similar position, especially if an order were to cause a delay in rescue. This was compounded by previous trauma from the Federation-Klingon War during a clandestine mission to Kenfori when Captain Christopher Pike and Dr. Joseph M'Benga needed to be extracted, causing her to sabotage Acting Captain Una Chin-Riley's cautious plan to sneak past the Klingons present in order to force Una to enact her own, more dangerous plan. That same year, during the Siege of AR-558, Ensign Nog lost his leg, necessitating an artificial replacement. He then experienced a form of post-traumatic stress disorder, retreating into a holosuite fantasy of Vic's lounge. He explained to Vic Fontaine that he was scared, that when the war began, he was eager and wanted to test himself, but if he could lose his leg then anything could happen and that he didn't know if he could face the possibility of his own death. Fontaine, however, told him that while he couldn't tell him what was going to happen, that you have to play the cards that life deals you and remain in the game. (DS9: "It's Only a Paper Moon"

David Mack, who co-wrote the initial story for "It's Only a Paper Moon" with John J. Ordover, explained that Ronald D. Moore asked the two to draft a full outline of the idea of Nog coming home following the Siege of AR-558 and seeking solace in the Vic Fontaine holoprogram. What he and Ordover added to the premise was the reason Nog was there - PTSD - post-traumatic stress disorder, that he had confronted the truth of his own mortality.

Neelix experienced a condition neurochemically identical to post-traumatic stress disorder in 2376, due to the memories of the Nakan massacre placed into his mind by a memorial monument on Tarakis. When Naomi Wildman accidentally burned herself in his kitchen, Neelix flashed back to the massacre and, brandishing a phaser, barricaded them inside the mess hall. (VOY: "Memorial")

Writer Bo Yeon Kim described Humanity as handling PTSD following the Burn, influencing Earth's decision to separate from the Federation as mentioned in DIS: "People of Earth". (TRR: "People of Earth")
