Ultimate Battle

An Ultimate Battle (Japanese: 究極高難度バトル) is a special type of permanent battle content in Pokémon Masters EX. Introduced on November 14, 2023, these battles have the Ultimate difficulty level and pit the player against a powerful sync pair generally formed with a Legendary Pokémon. Ultimate Battles are standard team battles, so players can use up to three sync pairs at once to battle the boss sync pair and their allies. Most boss sync pairs endure the first attack that would put them below a certain percentage of their maximum HP with that percentage of their maximum HP, similar to the HP bars used by Legendary Arena bosses.

Ultimate Battles are accessed from the Challenge the Strong menu in the Side Area section. This menu is unlocked after the player completes the Champion Stadium on Hard Lv. 1 difficulty for any region.

Each Ultimate Battle awards the player with 300 Gems the first time it is completed. There are no rewards for completing the battle subsequent times.

Anabel's Flickering Flames

Anabel was the first Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Entei. This battle was first made available on November 14, 2023. Anabel & Entei and their allies are weak to Water-type moves.

Anabel & Entei set harsh sunlight upon entering battle and each time they use their sync move. They and their allies have several passive skills that give them benefits in sunny weather, such as powering up their attacks and reducing the damage they take. Anabel & Entei take less damage from attacks the more their stats have been raised in total, and field effects they set are permanent unless replaced. In addition, Anabel & Entei endure the first attack that would put them below 60% of their maximum HP with 60% of their maximum HP. The recommended strategy is to change the weather and lower Anabel & Entei's stats. Also, attacks from Anabel & Entei are powered up if their target is burned.

Thorton was the second Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Articuno. This battle was first made available on December 8, 2023. Thorton & Articuno and their allies are weak to Fire-type moves.

Thorton & Articuno endure the first attack that would put them below 60% of their maximum HP with 60% of their maximum HP. Thorton & Articuno and their allies have their Defense and Special Defense tripled when they are not affected by a negative status change. Thorton & Articuno have their Defense tripled upon entry, but this switches to Special Defense when they reach 60% of their maximum HP. Meanwhile, their allies have their Defense tripled the whole time. In addition, Thorton & Articuno and their allies' attacks are powered up when their Defense is raised. The recommended strategy is to inflict negative status changes, lower the opponents' Defense, and use both physical and special attacks.

Darach was the third Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Staraptor. This battle was first made available on January 9, 2024. Darach & Staraptor and their allies are weak to Rock-type moves.

Darach & Staraptor endure the first attack that would put them below 40% of their maximum HP with 40% of their maximum HP. They and their allies have several passive skills that give them benefits when they are unaffected by any field effects, such as powering up their attacks and tripling their Defense and Special Defense. In addition, the opponents have relatively lower resistance to Damage Fields, but when Darach & Staraptor's HP reaches 40% or lower, they won't receive any damage from them. The recommended strategy is to set up field effects such as Damage Fields and weather conditions.

Argenta & Suicune endure the first attack that would put them below 50% of their maximum HP with 50% of their maximum HP, and will remove any negative status changes inflicted on them and their allies. Argenta & Suicune make the weather rainy upon entering battle and the first time their HP reaches below 50% of their maximum HP. Also, the Lass & Slowbro set up a Psychic Terrain upon entering battle or by using Psychic Terrain. Argenta & Suicune and their allies have several passive skills that give them benefits in rainy weather, such as powering up their attacks, reducing the damage they take and protecting them from status conditions and certain negative status changes. They also have their moves powered up when Psychic Terrain is in effect. Field effects they set are permanent unless replaced. In addition, Argenta & Suicune and their allies have their Defense and Special Defense tripled when they are unaffected by negative status changes. The recommended strategy is to change the weather and terrain, and inflict negative status changes.

Palmer's Rumbling Might

Palmer was the fifth Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Regigigas. This battle was first made available on March 9, 2024. Palmer & Regigigas and their allies are weak to Fighting-type moves.

Due to the combination of their passive skills, attacks from Palmer & Regigigas and their allies always land a critical hit, even if the player's team has passive skills like Vigilance. Field effects they set are permanent unless replaced. In addition, upon using their first sync move, Palmer & Regigigas set up a Normal Zone, immediately followed by a Max Strike that hits all opponents due to the passive skill Targets Maxed. After Palmer & Regigigas use their sync move, their sync buff is raised by an additional three ranks, making it extremely difficult to survive Max Strike. The recommended strategy is to defeat Palmer & Regigigas before they use their sync move and their max move.

Lucy & Seviper endure the first attack that would put them below 80% and 40% of their maximum HP with 80% and 40% of their maximum HP respectively, and will remove any status conditions and negative status changes inflicted on them. Lucy & Seviper and their allies have their attacks powered up when their Speed is raised. In addition, their moves with a chance of poisoning the target are guaranteed to do so thanks to their passive skill, with their attacks being powered up against poisoned opponents. Leon & Charizard and their allies have their Defense and Special Defense tripled when they are not affected by a field effect, and their moves are also powered up. In addition, when they are not affected by a status condition, their moves, sync moves, and max moves are powered up, and they are immune to critical hits. Leon & Charizard endure the first attack that would put them below 60% of their maximum HP with 60% of their maximum HP, at which point they also remove any status conditions inflicted on them and their allies as well as removing any weather, terrain, or zone on the field of play. Any move used by Leon & Charizard's allies will put every Pokémon it hits to sleep, unless they are immune to sleep, and their moves are powered up against opponents that are affected by a status condition. Nita & Landorus endure the first attacks that would put them below 80% and 50% of their maximum HP. Nita & Landorus cause a sandstorm upon entering battle and the first time their HP reaches below 80% and 50% of their maximum HP. Nita & Landorus and their allies have several passive skills that give them benefits in sandstorm, such as powering up their attacks, restoring their HP. The duration of a sandstorm is extended due to Nita & Landorus's passive, Sand Alert 5. Nita & Landorus and their allies have their Defense and Special Defense tripled when their Speed is raised. Noland & Machamp endure the first attack that would put them below 80% and 50% of their maximum HP with 80% and 50% of their maximum HP respectively. They and their allies know Fissure and Earthquake, and they have the skills Piercing Gaze and Piercing Blows, which make their moves never miss, ignore damage-reducing passive skills, and ignore the Enduring effect. They also have several skills that raise their stats, apply the Critical Hit ↑ Next effect, and maximize their Physical Moves ↑ Next effect. In addition, each time Noland & Machamp use their sync move, their total sync move countdown is reduced by one. Their moves and sync moves are also powered up the more their stats are raised, and their allies can raise the whole team's stats each time they use a move. Their allies can also lower the accuracy of the whole team. While not immune to status or interference conditions such as sleep and flinching, they gain an extended Condition Nullification effect each time they recover from a status or interference condition. When the Masked Royal & Ninetales and their allies are not affected by a status condition, their Defense and Sp. Def are tripled, their moves and sync moves are powered up, and they are immune to critical hits. All opponents' status conditions are cured when any opponent uses an item move, as well as when the Masked Royal & Ninetales faint.

In addition, all opponents' moves and sync moves are powered up when their Attack, Sp. Atk, or Speed is raised. Each time the Masked Royal & Ninetales use their sync move, their Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed are raised by two ranks. When either of the opponents on the sides successfully uses an attack move, all opponents' Attack and Sp. Atk is raised, and there is a 60% chance of raising their Speed as well.

Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed are raised by two stat ranks. The recommended strategy is to repeatedly poison the opponents and lower their Attack, Sp. Atk, and Speed.

Nemona's Lightning Spirit

Nemona was the thirteenth Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Pawmot. This battle was first made available on November 8, 2024. Nemona & Pawmot and their allies are weak to Psychic-type moves.

When Nemona & Pawmot and their allies are not affected by a negative status change, their Defense and Sp. Def are tripled. However, they are all immune to flinching. All opponents' status negative status changes are removed after Nemona & Pawmot use their sync move. In addition, when one of Nemona & Pawmot's allies uses an item move, the flinching, confused, and trapped conditions are removed from all opponents.

Nemona & Pawmot set Electric Terrain upon entering battle, each time they use their sync move, and the first time they reach 60% of their maximum HP. They also endure the first attack that would put them below 60% of their maximum HP with 60% of their maximum HP. While Electric Terrain is active, Nemona & Pawmot and their allies' moves and sync moves are powered up, they take 30% less damage from attack moves, they cannot be inflicted with an interference condition, their stats cannot be lowered, and they restore 6% of their maximum HP whenever they take an action. In addition, all field effects set by the opponents are permanent.

Each time Nemona & Pawmot use their sync move, their team's Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed are raised by two ranks. Each time Pawmot successfully lands an attack move, the targeted opponent's Defense and Sp. Def are lowered by one stat rank. In addition, Pawmot's moves are powered up the more the target's Defense and Sp. Def have been lowered.

The recommended strategy is to repeatedly change the terrain and apply negative status changes, especially confusion and lowered type rebuff.

Morgan was the fourteenth Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Latias. This battle was first made available on December 7, 2024. Morgan & Latias and their allies are weak to Dragon-type moves.

Morgan & Latias and their allies start the battle with their Defense and another stat raised by one stat rank each. For Morgan & Latias, the other stat is Sp. Def; for Morgan & Latias's allies, the other stat is Attack. Their Defense and the other stat are raised by two stat ranks per target when their attack move is successful (unless the target is immune to having the stat lowered). When the Defense or the other stat of Morgan & Latias or their allies is raised, they take 80% less damage from moves and sync moves. Morgan & Latias endure the first attack that would put them below 60% of their maximum HP with 60% of their maximum HP, at which point their team's Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed are raised by two stat ranks each.

At the beginning of the battle, Morgan & Latias's allies lower all opponents' accuracy by a total of eight stat ranks. If an opponent's attack misses, Morgan & Latias and their allies have some HP restored. In addition, each time Morgan & Latias or their allies successfully lands an attack move, the opponent's Defense and the other stat are lowered by two stat ranks, and three random stats are lowered by two stat ranks each. Each time Morgan & Latias use their sync move, the opponents' Attack and Sp. Atk are lowered by four stat ranks. Morgan and Latias and their allies' moves and sync moves are powered up when any of the opponent's stats are lowered.

The recommended strategy is to avoid letting the opponents lower the player's stats while lowering the opponents' Attack, Defense, and Sp. Def.

Dana's Icy Passion

Dana was the fifteenth Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Regice. This battle was first made available on January 13, 2025. Dana & Regice and her Abomasnow ally are weak to Steel-type moves, while her Aurorus ally is weak to Rock-type moves.

When Dana & Regice and their allies are under the effects of an Ice Zone, they will have multiple beneficial effects applied to them, such as regaining HP after using a move, having the move gauge charge rapidly, massive damage boosts applied to their moves and sync moves and immunity to status conditions. While Dana & Regice and their allies are under the effects of hail, they also gain additional healing and a large reduction in damage. Dana & Regice also endure the first attack that would put them below 80% and 30% of their maximum HP with 80% and 30% of their maximum HP respectively.

At the beginning of the battle, Dana & Regice set Ice Zone upon entering battle, as well as upon the first time they reach 80% and 30% of their maximum HP. In addition, their Pokémon Ranger & Abomasnow ally make the weather hail upon entering battle and as soon as Regice faints, and all field effects they set are permanent. Dana & Regice's allies lower all opponents' accuracy by a total of four stat ranks. If an opponent's attack misses, Dana & Regice and their allies have 20% of their maximum HP restored, gaining Physical Moves ↑ and Special Moves ↑ and having their evasion, Attack, and Sp. Atk increase by one stage. Each time Dana & Regice use their sync move, all opponents' accuracy is lowered by an additional two stat ranks. Dana & Regice's allies also lower their target's accuracy by two stages every time an attack move against it is successful.

The recommended strategy is to change the weather and zone, and to use attacks from sync pairs that cannot have their accuracy lowered or cannot miss.

Dahlia was the seventeenth Ultimate Battle boss, forming a sync pair with Ludicolo. This battle was first made available on March 6, 2025. Dahlia & Ludicolo and their allies are weak to Bug-type moves.

When Dahlia & Ludicolo and their allies are unaffected by an interference condition (confusion, flinching, or trapped), their Defense and Sp. Def are tripled. However, they are all immune to flinching. Dahlia & Ludicolo take less damage the more their stats have been raised in total, and they and their allies have various methods of raising the team's stats: each time Dahlia & Ludicolo successfully use a move, all opponents' Speed is raised by one stat rank; each time any of the opponents successfully uses a move, one stat out of Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed is raised at random for all opponents; each time Dahlia successfully uses a move, all opponents' Attack is raised by one stat rank; the first time Ludicolo uses a status move, all opponents' critical-hit rate is raised by three stat ranks. In addition, Dahlia & Ludicolo and their allies start the battle with their evasiveness raised by two stat ranks each, and each time a move misses one of them, their evasiveness is raised by one stat rank. Two Finest Subway Brothers

Ingo and Emmet were the eighteenth Ultimate Battle bosses, forming sync pairs with Haxorus and Archeops respectively. This battle was first made available on April 12th, 2025. Emmet & Archeops are weak to Steel-type moves, while Ingo & Haxorus are weak to Fairy-type moves.

Both Emmet & Archeops and Ingo & Haxorus have their defense and Sp. Defense quintupled, and their sync moves and moves boosted heavily if certain requirements are not in effect. For Emmet & Archeops, the requirement is being afflicted by a status condition; for Ingo & Haxorus, the requirement is having their Defense raised. Both Emmet & Archeops and Ingo & Haxorus also have their sync moves and moves boosted heavily if their target is not affected by effects that apply only to the allied field of play.

Ingo & Haxorus start the battle with their Defense raised by one stat rank. Ingo and Haxorus endure the first attack that would put them below 40% of their maximum HP with 40% of their maximum HP, at which point their Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, and Speed are raised by two stat ranks each. In addition, each time Ingo successfully uses a move, the Defense of all opponents is raised by one stat rank. If Archeops faints before Haxorus, Haxorus' Physical Moves ↑ Next effect is increased by two ranks.

Emmet & Archeops are immune to critical hits when not afflicted by a status condition. Emmet & Archeops endure the first attack that would put them below 30% of their maximum HP with 30% of their maximum HP, at which point they remove all status conditions from all opponent sync pairs. Trivia

  • The first Ultimate Battle, Anabel's Flickering Flames, featured the same Legendary Pokémon opponent as the first Legendary Arena, Entei. They also have the same weakness, Water.
    • Similarly, the second Ultimate Battle, Thorton's Freezing Frost, featured opponents with the same weakness (Fire) as the opponents of the second Legendary Arena, Cobalion.
  • Thorton's Freezing Frost was the first Ultimate Battle where one of the Trainers does not match the battle's primary type; in this case, the Scientist's Steelix is a Steel/Ground type rather than an Ice type.
