Detective Pikachu
Tim is a young man who has talent as a detective. Prior to the events of the game, he passed the admissions test to attend Ryme University in the fall.
Tim arrives in Ryme City to look for his father, Harry Goodman, who had disappeared in a car accident two months prior. He soon meets Detective Pikachu, a Pikachu who speaks like a human; however, no one else seems to be able to understand him. He teams up with Pikachu to retrieve a necklace that Aipom stole from a little girl.
After retrieving the necklace, Detective Pikachu brings Tim to the Baker Detective Agency, where his father used to consult. Tim asks the head of the agency, Mike Baker, about his dad's disappearance, but all Mr. Baker will say is that Harry got into a car accident while investigating a case involving Pokémon. Tim decides to go to his father's apartment to look for more clues, and Pikachu tags along - after all, he wants to find Harry, too. At the apartment, they find a map marking all the locations Tim's father had been investigating and decide to visit one of them - a place called Litwick Cave.
In the cave, they meet Meiko Okamoto and Emilia Christie, two women who work for the news station GNN. The pair are being attacked by a wild Glalie, and Tim and Pikachu work together to drive the Glalie away. Unfortunately, the entrance to the cave collapses in the ruckus, forcing them to look for another way out. With the help of a wild Drifblim, Tim and the others manage to escape the cave.
After escaping, Pikachu reveals that he found a vial on the floor of the cave that might be connected to the case somehow. Tim and Pikachu decide they need to figure out where it came from. They decide to investigate PCL, the research facility that it seemed Harry had been visiting before the accident. Tim gets a part-time job as an assistant at PCL, using the pseudonym Tim Ottman, so he and Pikachu can investigate the facility. They eventually find the same type of vial that Pikachu found in the cave, confirming that it came from someone at this facility. While trying to determine who exactly the vial came from, they discover that it was being used as a container for a substance called R which causes Pokémon to go berserk when ingested. They learn that the researcher who was making R, Carlos Hernando, worked for the man who had Harry's car tampered with because he knew too much, which caused the car accident. Carlos is arrested, but they know that there's still someone out there who bought R from Carlos and caused Harry to go missing.
Detective Pikachu Returns
Two years following the R incident, Tim and Detective Pikachu continue to serve Ryme City as detectives. As part of Pokémon Friendship Week, Mayor Howard Myers gives them medals in honor of all the work they have done to help the people of Ryme City.
The next day, Tim and Pikachu's services are enlisted by Inspector Frank Holiday to assist in the investigation at Sanjeev Denis's mansion, where the legendary Aurora Drop, a precious jewel, has gone missing. Tim and Pikachu are able to deduce that the culprit was Larry Turner, who had been working with an unknown accomplice, and that the Aurora Drop had been swallowed by Turner's partner, Cramorant. Although Cramorant initially spits up the jewel, a mysterious cube on Cramorant's back suddenly activates and the Gulp Pokémon swallows the Aurora Drop and escapes. During the investigation, they run into Tim's classmate Rachel Myers, the daughter of Mayor Myers, and her friend Jessica Miller. They also briefly encounter an oddly behaving scientist named Charles Merloch, who performs a brief health exam on Pikachu.
After the investigation at the Denis Residence, Tim and Pikachu return home, where Tim's mother, Irene Goodman, and sister, Sophia Goodman, are visiting for Tim's medal ceremony. Rachel also joins for dinner who suggests that they meet with her professor Trevor Gordon to learn more about the Aurora Drop.
Tim, Pikachu, and Rachel head to the Southern Ruins, but find out from Professor Gordon's assistant, Chris Honor, that the professor had disappeared into the ruins days ago. Tim and Pikachu apply their detective skills to solve the ruins' puzzles and find Professor Gordon. They encounter a Galarian Darmanitan which reveals that it, alongside several of its Ice-type friends, were kidnapped by a mysterious group and escaped. As the group leave the ruins, they encounter a mysterious man who attempts to steal Pikachu before fleeing. Tim asks Professor Gordon about the Aurora Drop, and the professor reveals that it is believed to be the dormant form of an extraterrestrial Pokémon.
On their way home, Tim, Pikachu, and Rachel see Mewtwo escaping from a swarm of Beedrill and carrying Harry's unconscious body.
Before Tim and Pikachu can further investigate further, Pikachu is arrested by Brad McMaster for allegedly destroying a Slowpoke fountain. To prove Pikachu's innocence, Tim and Pikachu are forced to work separately. While in custody, Pikachu and the other detained Pokémon are given the same mysterious cube devices used by the men that attacked them, and Pikachu learns it is called a Control Cube and is used to control Pokémon's actions. Tim and Rachel are able to find evidence suggesting all of the detained Pokémon were framed, and Brad arrests the Chief of the Pokémon Protection Bureau. Upon reuniting, Pikachu reveals that he has found evidence that an organization known as Unitas is behind the wrongful detainment of Pokémon, and may be planning to target Jessica next.
The next morning, Tim, Rachel, and Pikachu head to Bamboo Borough to check in on Jessica, but arrive before Unitas and join Jessica on a trip into the Bamboo Forest. During their trek, Pikachu is plagued by repeated flashbacks of Harry, and becomes repeatedly mixed up between actions taken by Harry and actions taken by Pikachu, piquing Tim's suspicions. When Rachel and Jessica disappear, Tim and Pikachu eventually find their friends being held captive by another mysterious man controlling a Golem. Pangoro and Pikachu defeat the Golem, but Jessica reveals that a thumbdrive containing research from Rachel's mother, Emma, had already been stolen. The research suggests a way that it would be possible for a person and Pokémon's consciousness to be combined.

Tim confronts Pikachu about the inconsistencies in his memories about Harry. Together, they conclude that Pikachu's body contains both Pikachu and Harry's consciousnesses. Tim and Pikachu agree to investigate Unitas and try to return Harry to his own body.
Tim, Pikachu, and Rachel arrive at Unitas's facility at the Pokémon Unity Lab, and begin an infiltration, assisted by their friends Growlithe, Darmanitan, Luxray, and Pangoro. As they navigate the floors, they steadily uncover Unitas's motivations, as well as the fact that Unitas is being led by Mayor Myers who has been manipulated by Charles Merloch. The group confront Mayor Myers and Merloch on the bottom floor, where they convince Mayor Myers of Merloch's wrongdoings. However, it is too late, as Merloch is able to awaken the Aurora Drop, revealing its true form of Deoxys, and take over Deoxys's body. Mewtwo arrives to fight off Merloch in Deoxys's body and prevent him from escaping while Tim and Pikachu attempt to deactivate the machine. While the machine is stopped, the fusion persists. As such, Pikachu takes energy capsules containing energy extracted from his and Harry's bodies and smashes into Deoxys with them, returning Merloch to his own body and Deoxys back to its Aurora Drop form. Harry is reunited with his family as Merloch's machinations are put to an end.
Personality and characteristics
Tim is exceptionally compassionate, taking the time to help virtually every person and Pokémon he meets. Even after meeting him only a couple times, Emilia and Meiko are confident that he would never hurt a Pokémon. He is strongly self-motivated to find his father. He is observant and persistent, qualities that are very useful in his investigations. However, his persistence also causes him to be a bit reckless in his decision-making.
He comes from someplace far away from Ryme City. His hometown does not have any Pidove, but it does have Litwick.

Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan
Tim appears in the animated short Detective Pikachu & the Mystery of the Missing Flan. His flan goes missing while he is on his morning run, and he blames Detective Pikachu for eating it. Pikachu insists he didn't eat it, though, so the two work together to solve the mystery of what really happened to the flan. After Tim comes up with the idea to check the video footage Pikachu had been taking of his morning routine, Pikachu deduces that the culprit is a wild Applin that had gotten mixed up in the fruit they bought at the store.
