The Southern Ruins (Japanese: 南の遺跡 Southern Ruins) are a location in the game Detective Pikachu Returns which are located far from Ryme City. The ruins celebrate the coexistence between humans and Pokémon, and its puzzles embody this recurring theme. The construction of the ruins are said to have coincided with a large meteor shower.
Tim, Rachel, and Pikachu explore the ruins in search of Professor Gordon, a leading figure in the field of mineral archeology, to help understand more about the Aurora Drop. They also encounter Unitas at these ruins, who are looking to recapture Ice-type Pokémon who had escaped into these ruins. It is also later revealed that Unitas has taken away meteorites at the ruins to help power Merloch's fusion machine.
Geography
The ruins are made up of two floors which require puzzles to be completed in order to access the deeper sections of the ruins. Certain sections have been frozen by the Ice-type Pokémon in the ruins, which require the assistance of Monferno and Galarian Darmanitan to help melt or break away.
The ruins are situated at the top of a slope, and the area is snowing unnaturally due to the presence of the escaped Ice-type Pokémon who have been taken away from their usual habitat. Many Berry trees populate the area around the ruins, including Coba, Shuca, Haban, Nanab, Yache, Pinap, and Tamato Berry trees. Many fossils can also be found outside the ruins, including Skull Fossils, Armor Fossils and Old Amber. As it is the site of previous meteor shower, there are impact sites in the area as well as Pokémon such as Cleffa.
B1
B1 consists of three main rooms, with the largest center room housing the puzzle which prevents access to B2. This puzzle involves obtaining Berries from outside the ruins and correctly placing them on Passimian statues. Professor Gordon's Slowpoke is found with its tail frozen in the left-most room, while the right-most room's entrance is initially frozen over by the Ice-type Pokémon who were worried about Unitas recapturing them in the ruins.
B2
B2 is a larger floor consisting of multiple rooms. Professor Gordon is trapped in one of these rooms due to rubble blocking the entrance to the room. Tim and Pikachu befriend Galarian Darmanitan who assists them in breaking down this rubble. The innermost room is initially blocked off with a wall of ice, which is also broken down with the help of Darmanitan. The final puzzle in this room involves moving a Clefairy and human statue, and solving this puzzle reveals a hidden exit to the ruins exterior. Tim meets a Unitas member and their Croagunk and Mamoswine, who is fought off by Darmanitan in its Zen Mode form.

Although not registered as a local concern, Minior will also request assistance from Pikachu to help Minior and its friends to fly back home. Galarian Darmanitan can be used to smash the Minior's heavy shells so that they can return home.
