A course's research level (Japanese: 調査レベル survey level) in New Pokémon Snap affects the variety of wild Pokemon that will appear, as well as their behavior and expressions. The research level will increase as the player researches the course and gets their photos evaluated by Professor Mirror. On some courses, increasing the research level can unlock new routes to explore, and a high level may result in the appearance of rare Legendary or Mythical Pokémon. Previous research levels can be replayed from the course selection screen.

Research levels range from 1 to 3. Completing a course's highest research level brings it to Lv.MAX, though this does not result in any further changes to the course.
