Effect

The Poké Flute being used in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

Outside of battle

In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Let's Go, Pikachu!, and Let's Go, Eevee!, the Poké Flute is usable twice outside of battle. It can awaken and start a battle with either of the wild Snorlax who block the player's way by sleeping on Route 12 and Route 16.

How the Poké Flute is used to awake Snorlax:

  • In Generation I, this requires using the item from the Bag.
  • In Generation III, this item is available either from the Bag or by interacting with Snorlax.
  • In Generation VII, the player can only use this item by interacting with Snorlax.

After each battle ends, the player will be able to pass through the previously blocked spot. In Generations I and III, if the player uses the Poké Flute anywhere else outside of battle, it will have no effect except displaying the message: "Now, that's a catchy tune!"

In Pokémon Yellow, the Poké Flute cannot be used to wake the partner Pikachu up if Jigglypuff causes it to fall asleep at the Pewter City Pokémon Center. The player can instead wake it up by interacting with it or leaving the Pokémon Center.

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, the Poké Flute is not available as an item but instead as a radio station in the Pokégear if the player has both the Radio Card and EXPN Card. Specifically, his is the radio station 20 in Generation II, or the station represented by the cursor at the top of the radio screen in Generation IV. Like other radio stations, it can be used to replace the overworld background music themes with the Poké Flute music. It also awakens and starts a battle with the wild Snorlax who blocks the east entrance to Diglett's Cave if the player interacts with it while the music is playing.

In Pokémon X and Y, the player has to deliver the Poké Flute from the Parfum Palace to its owner, a Black Belt, who uses it to wake up a Snorlax that is blocking Route 7. The player does not get to keep the Poké Flute after they deliver it.

In battle

In Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, and LeafGreen, the Poké Flute is a reusable item that cures all Pokémon in the battle of sleep, including the opponent's Pokémon. If no Pokémon are asleep, it will have no effect on the battle, but still counts as the player's turn.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokémon with Soundproof cannot be woken up by the Poké Flute. In Pokémon X and Y and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, the Poké Flute cannot be used in battle.

Playing the Poké Flute will wake up sleeping Pokémon and may make them dance or pose for the player. There are three songs that can be played by the Poké Flute in this game, and Pokémon respond differently to each.

Another Poké Flute appeared in Awakening the Sleeping Giant!, under the ownership of Lord Shabboneau. It is used in an annual festival involving a Snorlax living in the area near Camphrier Town, but, unfortunately, it had been taken away by the egocentric Princess Allie from the Parfum Palace. After a series of many-sided events, Ash and his friends managed to get the Flute back and return it to Lord Shabboneau so he could start the festival. Team Rocket, believing the Flute could actually control Snorlax, tried to steal it in order to gather themselves an army of Sleeping Pokémon, but the Flute was soon recovered, allowing the festival to be successfully completed.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Ash's Pikachu is seen playing a Poké Flute in Supereffective Type, the ending song for Pokémon Ultimate Journeys.
