Black and White arrive on Route 4 after finding their next target is Nimbasa City. However, a sandstorm hinders their progress, and as White runs off to go buy sandstorm gear, Black sits at the library to study for his next Gym battle. He quickly runs into a group of Workers taking a break, playing a game of card flip organized by a mysterious man. After the game is concluded, Black speaks with the man, who takes him outside to introduce a new game to him; the man has his Bisharp cut a line in the sand near a Drilbur, then asks Black to guess which side of the line Drilbur will pop out of next.

As the two play the game for several rounds, a Worker suddenly falls into one of Drilbur's holes. Black tries to help the Worker, but the man holds him back, pointing out that he had chosen this particular area to play the game because he had known the Workers had no business there. This leads him to declare that the Worker who fell is an imposter.

The fake Worker sends a Maractus to fight the man's Bisharp, but it is defeated. Bisharp then cuts through the fake Worker's disguise, revealing him to be a Team Plasma Grunt. This leads Black to realize the mysterious man had purposefully set up the game to find the intruder, and he determines his identity is Grimsley of the Elite Four. Black asks him a series of questions, and Grimsley agrees to answer all of them if he is defeated in a Pokémon battle. Black is eager to accept the challenge, but soon discovers that if he loses, he will have to give up something highly valuable of his own. He realizes with anxiety that this could mean losing his Badges.
