Biology
Klawf is a crustacean Pokémon. It is primarily orange in color, with a cream underbelly and pink cheeks that can glow red. Its stony, armored carapace has a rugged texture, with three roughly pentagonal shapes protruding from the top. Its eyes are supported by stalks extending from inside its shell; Klawf can rotate these eyes freely in any direction to survey its surroundings.[1] Klawf's mouth is large and has rectangular "teeth" resembling battlements. Klawf has eight appendages, with claws on its two front-most limbs. Black fur-like bristles protrude from between its eyes and cover its joints.
Klawf can hang upside-down or sideways from the steep cliffs on which they live, waiting for prey to appear and jumping down to ambush them. However, if they wait too long while upside-down, their blood will rush to their head, making them dizzy. Klawf's claws have a strong grip, and they are skilled at using their claws to catch prey or exploit opponents' weak spots. For example, they can use one claw to immobilize an opponent and use the other claw to attack it and catch it off guard. Klawf can also move sideways to dodge attacks. Klawf can grow back their claws if they lose them; their claws and shells are used to make foods[1] such as Klawf al Ajillo and Klawf Sticks.
The player and Arven eventually found it in South Province (Area Three) to find the Herba Mystica it guards and defeated it, forcing it to flee. After both took its Herba Mystica, Klawf became a normal-sized Pokémon once again. After this, it can be rematched in its original location, and will have the Titan Mark when captured.
Pokédex entries
This Pokémon was unavailable prior to Generation IX.
A Titan Klawf debuted in PASV07. Violet and Arven challenged the Stony Cliff Titan in order to obtain its supply of Herba Mystica. They eventually succeeded with assistance from Nemona.
Klawf appears to be based on various species of crabs with hair-like bristles on their bodies, such as the horsehair crab (which has an orange-brown coloration), the velvet crab (a species found in the Mediterranean Sea), the Chinese mitten crab (an invasive species in Europe), or hairy stone crab (technically not a true crab). It may also derive inspiration from rock climbing. Its shiny coloration may be inspired by blue-colored crabs such as Callinectes sapidus.
Name origin
Klawf may be a combination of claw and cliff.
Gakegani may be a combination of 崖 gake (cliff) and 蟹 kani (crab) or 毛蟹 kegani (horsehair crab).
