Hana is a girl from the Paldea region who admires the mail carrier Dragonite that works for the Paldea Postal Service, and aims to be an ace mail carrier herself. One day, she is given a letter with no address, and suddenly has to scramble to find the sender. While running around town with her partner Fuecoco, she finally succeeds in finding the sender, a boy named Rio. She learns that Rio wrote the letter to his father, who is working away from home in the Kanto region, in order to wish him a happy birthday. But, it turns out that it's already the day of his birthday...
Plot
The short opens with a flashback of a 5-year-old Hana receiving a letter delivered by a post office Dragonite. In the present day, Hana, now 12 years old,[1] works at the Paldea Postal Service as a mail sorter. As the post office Dragonite returns after a delivery trip, Hana looks from her station with envy, wishing to become an ace mail carrier like it too. Hana complains about her job to the postmaster, while Hana's Fuecoco messes about with a letter in its mouth. The postmaster notices that the letter, which is stuffed with yellow fur, has no address and thus cannot be processed, leading Hana to volunteer to find its sender. Although the postmaster points out that she only wants to do it to excuse herself from having to sort letters, Hana sets off outside anyway.
Hana travels around Paldea to find the letter's sender, but no one is able to help her, and she keeps being accosted by wild Pokémon. Dejected, Hana sleeps in a field somewhere, and dreams about the time she got her letter, before she's woken up by a Yamper belonging to a young boy and his mother. Hana realizes that the yellow fur in the letter belongs to the boy's Yamper, and brings the letter to him. The boy, Rio, explains that he wants to send the letter as a birthday gift to his father, who is working abroad in the Kanto region. When Hana tells Rio that the letter will be delivered within a week, Rio confesses that his father's birthday is actually today.
Not knowing what to do to send the letter in such a short amount of time, Hana accidentally lets go of the letter and it flies away, but it is caught in time by Dragonite, who had noticed Hana going outside earlier. Hana pleads Dragonite for help in delivering Rio's letter, and Dragonite obliges, taking Hana and Rio along for the ride. The trio passes through various locations and Pokémon encounters along the way to Kanto: a breaching Kyogre summoning rain with its Drizzle Ability, a Gigantamax Cinderace battling at Galar's Wyndon Stadium, Kalos's Lumiose City and Prism Tower, a herd of Zebstrika, and a Latias and Latios in disguise, among other things.
In Kanto, Rio's father, a scientist working in a laboratory, is brought in by his colleagues for a surprise birthday party, which is crashed by Dragonite, Hana, and Rio. Rio walks up to his father and reads aloud the letter he wrote, while Hana reminisces of the letter she received in the flashback — it was a birthday gift containing a flower bracelet from her grandparents, which Hana wears to this day. After Rio finishes reading his letter and holds out his Yamper's fur as a birthday present, Rio's father hugs him tearfully while his colleagues clap and cheer. Dragonite and Hana's Fuecoco enjoy the party's desserts and Hana laughs happily.
In the epilogue, an older Hana has become a mail carrier in her own right, and sets off with her Crocalor to deliver a letter to a girl. As she travels, she greets Dragonite as it flies by, before it zips through the sky above an older Rio, who is preparing to attend Uva Academy.
