Build & Battle Box (TCG)

A Build & Battle Box, known as a Prerelease Kit prior to the Forbidden Light expansion, is a staple Pokémon Trading Card Game product introduced ahead of the Fates Collide expansion. Build & Battle Boxes have been released alongside every main expansion since their introduction. Build & Battle Boxes are intended to be used to play Limited format games, notably being used at Prerelease Tournaments prior to the expansion's official release.

Build & Battle Boxes are typically available at Pokémon Leagues that are part of the Play! Pokémon Prerelease Program two weeks before the release of their associated expansion. They are widely available at other retailers after the expansion's proper release.

Beginning with the Lost Origin expansion, Build & Battle Boxes are categorized as Play Level 2.

Composition

Every expansion has four predetermined groups of synergystic cards that may be included in the Build & Battle Box. Two of the four groups, plus an assortment of Trainer cards, are randomly combined to create a 23-card "Evolution pack" included in the Build & Battle Box. One of the two groups comes with an additional Prerelease promotional card stamped with the expansion's logo. With the exceptions of those released for Evolutions and Destined Rivals, the four possible Prerelease cards have unique collection numbers and artwork. Beginning with the Brilliant Stars expansion, the Evolution pack also contains 17 Basic Energy cards, making it a ready-to-play 40-card deck.

Build & Battle Boxes also come with a code card for use in Pokémon Trading Card Game Online or Pokémon Trading Card Game Live and 4 booster packs of the associated expansion. The cards in the booster packs may be combined with the Evolution pack to customize the 40-card deck used to play a Limited format game.

Build & Battle Stadium

A Build & Battle Stadium is a related product released alongside expansions from Evolving Skies to Paradox Rift. Each Build & Battle Stadium contains two Build & Battle Boxes, four additional booster packs, 121 Basic Energy cards, six damage-counter dice, a competition-legal coin-flip die, and acrylic condition markers. Build & Battle Stadiums are designed for players to be able to have a Limited format-style game at home without having to purchase any additional products.
