Singularised plural of qalza (“pant leg”), from older Sicilian *calza (“hose, stocking”), from Early Medieval Latin calcea, from Latin calceus (“shoe”). Compare contemporary Sicilian causi, cansi (“trousers”) and, with the original sense and form preserved, Italian calza (“sock, stocking”).
