Etymology
Uncertain. Pischel, Tedesco, and Mayrhofer (at least by the time of EWA) believe it to be a later form of स्मृ (smṛ, “to remember”) via sanskritization of early Middle Indo-Aryan (e.g. smāra- > *mhāra- > bhāla-). Compare Prakrit भलइ (bhalaï, “arranges, remembers”), भरइ (bharaï, “remembers”). Relatively early attestation in the Upanishads leads Mayrhofer to also suggest derivation from भाल (bhāla, “lustre”) (Proto-Indo-European *bʰel-) or भा (bhā) (Proto-Indo-European *bʰeh₂-).
