A tie-dyed coma beetle

The tie-dyed coma beetle was an insect native to the planet Targalus IX.

Their bite or sting was able to incapacitate a person to the point where it appeared that they were dead, because it induced a death-like coma.

In 2382, when Lieutenant jg Brad Boimler's subordinates from his away team were kidnapped by Targalan capitalist extremists, they used a tie-dyed coma beetle to fool their captors into believing that they were dead. (LD: "Shades of Green")
