Spatial cells inside the galactic barrier

A spatial cell was a discrete "bubble" of space in the galactic barrier that was protected from negative particles. Created by vacuum state fluctuations, they formed spontaneously in large numbers and drifted through the barrier at random intervals. Cells varied in stability, with 95% of them prevented by negative energy from reaching equilibrium and settling into a fixed spectrum emission.

In 3190, the USS Discovery crew took advantage of the spatial cells to successfully traverse the galactic barrier. By staying within the cells as much as possible, they were able to minimize the time that the ship spent exposed to negative energy. (DIS: "The Galactic Barrier")
