SS 433
SS 433 was a quasar binary star system consisting of a black hole accreting matter from a white dwarf. This system was visible from Earth in the constellation Aquila. It was approximately 18.000 light years from Sol.
A painting of this system depicted the two components from the perspective of a rocky world. In 2364, this painting was displayed in the observation lounge aboard the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")
This painting was painted by Rick Sternbach for Science Digest. It illustrated an article by Dr. William Kaufmann.
It was seen in the observation lounge in the episodes "Code of Honor", "The Last Outpost", "The Big Goodbye", "Datalore", "Coming of Age", "Symbiosis", "Skin Of Evil", "We'll Always Have Paris", "Conspiracy", and "The Neutral Zone". [1]
SS 433 was the first microquasar discovered by astronomers.
